따사로운 봄 햇살 아래 흩날리는 벚꽃잎, 녹음이 짙어진 숲길, 가족과 함께하는 평온한 저녁 식사, 늦잠을 실컷 자고 일어나는 주말 아침. 우리에겐 저마다 마음이 두근거리는 순간, 이른바 ‘심쿵 모먼트’가 있습니다.
최근의 저는 뜻밖에도 ‘고양이 키스’에 심쿵하고 말았습니다.
혹시 ‘고양이 키스’라는 말을 들어보셨나요? 저는 고양이를 키워본 적이 없어서 이번에 처음 알게 되었습니다.
강아지는 신뢰를 표현할 때 배를 보이곤 합니다. 온몸을 뒤집어 바닥에 드러누운 채, 가장 약한 부분을 내어보이는 모습 말입니다. 집에서 편안하게 늘어져 가족들에게 배를 보여주는 모아를 볼 때면, 저는 “아, 우리 모아가 가족들을 믿고 편안해하는구나” 하고 안심하게 됩니다.
반면 고양이는 조금 다르다고 합니다. 고양이는 상대를 신뢰할 때 눈을 천천히 깜빡인다고 해요. 마치 “나는 당신을 믿어요”라고 말하듯이요. 이 모습을 보통 ‘고양이 키스’라고 부른다고 합니다. 이 사실을 저는 이루리 작가님의 그림책 『고양이 키스』를 통해 알게 되었습니다. 이루리 작가님의 책에는 작가님이 사랑하는 존재들이 자주 등장하는데, 고양이도 그중 하나인 듯했습니다. 무엇보다 놀라웠던 건, 오로지 다섯 글자만으로 이야기를 끌고 가는 작가님의 방식이었습니다. 짧고 단순한 말들인데도 감정과 장면이 또렷하게 살아 있더라고요.
이야기 속 강아지는 마음을 홀딱 빼앗긴 고양이에게 보석을 선물하고 싶어 합니다. 그래서 소중한 뼈다귀를 챙겨 보석방으로 향하지요. 하지만 안타깝게도 강아지는 보석을 살 수 없습니다. 보석상 주인이 뼈다귀를 받아주지 않았기 때문입니다. 쓸쓸한 마음으로 집으로 돌아오는 길, 비까지 추적추적 내립니다. 강아지는 결국 빈손인 채로 고양이 앞에 섭니다. 그리고 미안한 마음으로 자초지종을 설명하기 시작합니다.
그때 저녁을 먹고 있던 고양이가 강아지 앞에서 눈을 한 번 깜빡입니다. 천천히 감았다 뜨는 그 짧은 순간. 그러자 강아지는 그만 감동에 푹 빠져 쓰러지고 맙니다. 정말 기절했다기보다, 너무 벅차서 정신을 못 차릴 정도였겠지요. 그리고 고양이는 아무 일도 없었다는 듯 유유히 사라집니다. 강아지를 심쿵하게 만들어놓고, 가벼운 꼬리짓과 함께 사라지는 고양이의 뒷모습으로 그림책은 끝이 납니다.
직장생활을 하고, 여러 인간관계를 겪으며 살아가다 보면 어느새 나만의 관계 법칙 같은 것이 생깁니다. 예전에는 선입견 없이 사람을 대하던 마음에도 조금씩 빗장이 걸립니다. ‘이번에도 상처받으면 어떡하지?’, ‘괜히 오버하지 말자.’하고 마음속으로 말하며 한 발 물러서게 되는 순간들이 생깁니다.
그런 저에게 『고양이 키스』는 참 따뜻하고도 익살스럽게 다가왔습니다. 말장난처럼 보이기도 하는 다섯 글자 안에, 관계의 설렘과 머뭇거림, 진심과 위로가 모두 담겨 있었습니다. 그림은 또 얼마나 사랑스럽던지요. 책장을 넘기는 내내 절로 미소가 지어졌습니다. 그리고 문득 알게 되었습니다. 제가 정말 좋아하는 건 거창하고 대단한 순간이 아니라, 이렇게 가볍고 익살스럽고 다정한 순간들이라는 것을요.

어쩌면 그런 순간들이야말로 우리를 오늘도 살아가게 하는 힘인지도 모르겠습니다.
What Makes Your Heart Flutter?

each of us has our own little heart-fluttering moments. Recently, I found myself unexpectedly charmed by something called a “cat kiss.”
Have you ever heard that expression before? I hadn’t. Since I’ve never had a cat, this was completely new to me. Dogs often show trust by exposing their belly. They roll over and reveal the most vulnerable part of themselves. Whenever I see Moa stretched out comfortably at home, showing her belly to the family, I feel reassured. It makes me think, Moa feels safe with us. She trusts us.
Cats, on the other hand, express trust a little differently. I learned that when a cat slowly blinks at you, it is a sign of trust—as if to say, I trust you. People often call this a “cat kiss.” I discovered this through the picture book Cat Kiss by the children’s author Iruri. In Iruri’s books, the things and beings the author loves often appear again and again, and cats seem to be one of them.
What moved me even more was the author’s ability to tell a whole story using only five words. The language is simple and minimal, yet the emotions and scenes come alive so vividly. In the story, a dog falls head over heels for a cat and wants to give the cat a jewel as a gift. So the dog takes along a treasured bone and heads out to a jewelry shop. But sadly, the dog cannot buy the jewel. The jeweler refuses to accept the bone.
On the way home, the dog feels lonely, and to make matters worse, it begins to rain. The dog returns empty-handed and starts to explain everything to the cat, full of apology and disappointment. Then, while eating dinner, the cat slowly blinks once at the dog. Just one blink—eyes gently closing and opening.
And that is enough to make the dog collapse in pure emotion. Not literally fainting, of course, but falling over from being so completely overwhelmed with joy. Then the cat simply walks away, calm and graceful as ever. That is how the picture book ends: with the image of the cat leaving lightly, after making the dog’s heart race.
As we move through working life and experience all kinds of relationships, we gradually develop our own unwritten rules about people. The open-hearted way we once approached others begins to narrow. What if I get hurt again? Don’t overdo it. We tell ourselves these things and slowly become more guarded.
That is why Cat Kiss felt so warm and playful to me. Within those five short words, the story holds so much—hesitation, affection, sincerity, and comfort. And the illustrations were just as delightful. They were so charming that I couldn’t help but smile as I read. And in that smile, I realized something about myself: What I truly love is not grand or dramatic moments, but light, playful, tender ones like these.
