태담을 위한 영어동화 2가지
오늘로 14주 차가 되었다.
아이가 엄마 뱃속에서 자라고 있을 때, 태담을 들려주는 것은 아이 정서 발달에 도움이 된다고 한다. 직관적으로 와닿는 접근은 아니지만, 아이가 나중에 말을 하게 되는 시점에 뱃속에서의 일들을 기억한다는 사례도 있지 않겠는가. 입장 바꿔서 내가 뱃속에 있다고 생각하더라도 부모님의 행복한 대화나 이야기 소리에 안정감을 느낄 것이었다.
귀와 뇌가 발달하는 시점에 들려줄 이야기를 하나 만들기로 하였다.
하지만 아직은 서사 구조를 이해할 수 있는 나이는 아니었으므로, 차라리 "영어의 운율"에 익숙해질 수 있는 이야기를 들려줘야겠다고 생각했다.
그래서 "영어적 리듬"에 익숙해질 수 있는 이야기를 아래와 같이 뽑아 보았다. 또한 다양한 자음을 넣어, 매 문장이 명확하게 들릴 수 있도록 문장을 구성했다.
성별이 남자아이이므로, 남자아이가 모험을 떠나 성장하며 사랑에 빠지는 동화 같은 이야기를 만들어 달라고 하였다. 건강하게 자라서 (빠르게) 독립하기를 바라는 마음에서...
The Boy Who Sailed Beyond the Stars
Once upon a time, in a tiny village by the sea,
Lived a little boy named [아이이름], wild and free.
With golden curls and eyes so bright,
He dreamed of wonders, beyond the night.
His mother held him, soft and tight,
Whispering, "Stay, my love, don’t take flight."
But [아이이름], oh [아이이름], his heart so bold,
Yearned for stories, yet untold.
One starry eve, a whisper came,
Calling softly, speaking his name.
"Come, dear [아이이름], sail away.

챗GPT로 표지를 생성했다. 근데 모험을 떠나기에는 너무 어린 나이로 묘사된 게 아닌가...[아이이름]은 태명도 좋고, 실제로 붙일 이름도 좋겠다.
또한 모험을 강조하면서 너무 위기감을 조성하진 않도록 하자.
최초로 만들어진 버전은, 두 번째 문단에서 아이를 떠나보내는 부분이 고무적으로 묘사되었다. 몰입해서 읽다가 흥분해서 언성을 높였다. 부모님이 싸우는 목소리에도 태아가 불안해한다는데, 단순히 웅얼거림만 알아들을 우리 아이가 혹시나 놀라지 않았을까 괜한 걱정이 들었다.
*원본은 "Come dear, sail away! your adventure awaits! Your journey will be full of surprise, and full of hopes.".
그리고 공주도 아니고 마법사와의 사랑 이야기가 마음에 들지 않을 수도 있지만, 공주님과 사랑에 빠지는 클리셰는 더욱 피하고 싶어서, 용감한 소년과 마법사의 사랑이야기를 채택하였다.
이틀째 읽어주고 있는데 운율이 살아있어서 이야기가 잘 만들어졌다는 생각이 든다.
그런데 한 가지 안타까운 부분은, 생각보다 이야기가 재미가 없다는 것.
물론 시중에 파는 다른 동화책들도 많이 읽어봤고, 어른들이 읽기에는 하나같이 재미가 없는 건 마찬가지이긴 했다. 예를 들면, 『피아노를 열어보니 코뿔소가 숨어있고, 장롱 열어보니 고양이가 숨어있더라.』 는 내용이 재미있어 봤자 얼마나 재미있겠는가.
게다가 챗GPT 가 만들었다고 하니, "그럴싸해 보이지만 흡인력은 없는 평점 3점대 수준의" 느낌이 나는 것도 어쩔 수 없다. 영어 동화를 많이 만들어보며 나중에 적당한 터치업을 통해 이야기의 풍미를 더할 날이 오기를 기대해 본다.

그리고 이틀이 지났다.
첫 번째 동화를 이틀째 읽다 보니 단조롭고 재미없어서 아래와 같이 플롯을 조금 꼬아서 새로운 이야기를 만들었다. 적당한 터치업을 통해 약간의 재미도 주었다. 이번 이야기는 성인이 읽기에 나쁘지 않은 듯하다. 특히 떠날 것인가 남을 것인가 하는 선택의 순간을 넣어 이야기속 주인공의 고민에 동참하게 하고, 반전요소로 아버지를 흑막으로 설정한 것도 나름대로 소소한 재미를 준다고나 할까.
다음엔 여자아이를 위한 태담 동화도 만들어 보아야겠다.
아래 두 번째 동화로 태담을 시작하고, 조금 더 발전시킬 요소가 있으면 수정해 보겠다.

The Boy Who Dreamed of the Unknown
In a small village by the sea,
Lived young [아이이름], wild and free.
With golden curls and a curious mind,
He longed to leave the world behind.
"Beyond the waves, beyond the sky,
A hidden world awaits." he'd sigh.
But his mother warned him, night and day,

The Woman in the Mist

The Starbound Prison

She turned away, sadness deep,
For she, too, was cursed to keep.

To break these chains… or stay with me."
A choice was his—leave or stay,
Doom the world, or love away.
His heart beat fast, his fate unclear,
Yet in her eyes, he felt no fear.
The Price of Freedom

"If love will save us, then let it be right."
As fingers touched, the stars burned bright,
The curse was lifted into the night.
The land returned, the sky turned blue,
And [아이이름], at last, had found what’s true.
