독서노트
'The prince of Dutch Letters'라고 불렸던 서체 디자이너 Gerard Unger(1942)의 삶에 대해 읽었는데, 1982-83년에 만들어진 Flora는 1983년에 태어난 그의 딸의 이름을 따서 지었다는 이야기가 재밌었다. 그리고 이 대목도 재미있었다.
“While Unger designed the ANWB typeface as a 'subcontractor' for the Leyden industrial design firm n|p|k (the designers of the new road signage), the roles were reversed in the next project. Unger won the assignment, then called in n|p|k. The job was one of the most remarkable of his entire career: the design of an information and signage system for the celebrations of the Holy Year 2000 in Rome, an event that was expected to attract 2o to 25 million visitors.”
늘 subcontractor 역할만 하지 않는다. 갑과 을이 바뀌는 날이 오던 그날에 Gerard Unger는 얼마나 즐거웠을까?
