팔대보살 (약사경 강설 중)
There are eight Great Bodhisattvas who will come to welcome us at the end of our lives to the Eastern Vaidurya Pure Land. They symbolize the eight great awakenings:
생의 마지막 순간에 8대 보살은 동유리정토로 가는 우리에게 와서 우리를 환영합니다. 그들은 8가지 큰 깨달음을 상징합니다.
1. Manjusri Bodhisattva (symbolizing wisdom awakening because he understands the Buddha nature). He is present at most Great Assemblies and acts as the leader of all the Bodhisattvas. He is foremost in wisdom amongst the Bodhisattvas. He travels throughout the Dharma Realm teaching living beings to bring forth the Bodhi mind. He does not teach Chan, Pure Land, tantras etc… He urges us to resolve for Bodhi because that is the start of cultivation. Unless you resolve for Bodhi, your cultivation cannot be accomplished. If you can make that resolve, then you will succeed in any form of cultivation.
문수보살(불성을 이해하기 때문에 지혜의 깨달음을 상징합니다.) 그는 대부분의 대중법회에 참석하며 모든 보살들의 지도자 역할을 합니다. 보살 중에서 가장 지혜가 뛰어나며 법계 곳곳을 다니면서 중생들에게 보리심을 발하도록 가르칩니다. 문수보살은 선, 정토, 탄트라 등을 가르치지 않고 보리심을 발할 것을 촉구합니다. 왜냐하면 이것이 수행의 시작이기 때문입니다. 보리심을 발하지 않으면, 여러분의 수행은 성취될 수 없습니다. 발심을 했다면, 어떤 수행을 하던지 성공할 것입니다.
Question: When we still revolve in the reincarnation wheel, should we resolve for Bodhi each lifetime?
질문: 우리가 여전히 윤회의 바퀴 속에 있을 때, 매 생마다 보리심을 발해야 하나요?
Answer: Once is enough. However the more often you make the resolve, the more seeds you have to work with. Even though your faith is pretty weak or you may be quite skeptical about this “Bodhi thing”, it does not hurt to make such a resolve. Even the lower grades seeds will give us a chance.
답변: 한 번이면 충분합니다. 하지만 발심을 더 자주 할수록 더 많은 씨앗이 만들어집니다. 비록 여러분의 믿음이 상당히 약하거나 여러분이 이 '보리'에 대해 상당히 회의적일 수도 있지만, 그러한 마음을 발한다고 해서 나쁠 건 없습니다. 심지어 하품의 씨앗일지라도 우리에게는 기회가 있습니다.
Wisdom and Bodhi have what distinction? Wisdom has three kinds: worldly, transcendental and ultimate. Bodhi is the ultimate wisdom. The Bodhisattvas’ wisdom is not yet ultimate. The Arhat’s wisdom is transcendental but rather limited. Worldly wisdom is largely confusion.
지혜와 보리는 어떤 차이가 있습니까? 지혜에는 세 가지 종류가 있습니다: 세속적, 초월적, 궁극적 지혜입니다. 보리는 궁극의 지혜입니다. 보살들의 지혜는 아직 궁극적이지 않습니다. 아라한의 지혜는 초월적이지만 다소 제한적입니다. 세상의 지혜는 굉장히 혼란스럽습니다.
2. The Bodhisattva Who Observes the Sounds of the World (Avalokitesvara; also known as the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion), is popular within Hinayana as well as Mahayana.
세상의 소리를 관하는 보살 (관세음보살은 또한 대자비의 보살로도 알려져 있습니다.)은 대승뿐만 아니라 소승에서도 대중적입니다.
I once brought Master Heng Ge to visit a big Thai temple in Los Angeles. It is a big and famous temple. We met a handful of young Thai monks who were quite enthusiastic. We came to the gift counter and saw a lot of Buddha statues. There were a lot of Guan Yin statues. I asked the Guest Prefect monk: “Do you also believe in Guan Yin?” He said that they didn’t quite but their followers did.
한 번은 헝게 선사와 함께 로스앤젤레스에 있는 큰 태국 사원을 방문하였습니다. 그 절은 크고 잘 알려진 절입니다. 그곳에서 우리는 꽤 열정 있는 몇몇 젊은 태국 스님들을 만났습니다. 기념품 코너에서 우리는 많은 불상을 보았습니다. 그곳에는 관음불상이 많이 있었습니다. 지객 스님에게 "스님도 관음보살을 믿습니까?"라고 물었습니다. 그는 답하길 그들은 아니지만 신도들은 믿는다고 대답했습니다.
It does not matter what you believe in. If you are in danger, and you call to the Bodhisattva for help, then she’ll come to the rescue. The Bodhisattva is constantly in samadhi, scanning the sound waves for the requests for rescue.
여러분이 무엇을 믿는지는 중요하지 않습니다. 위험에 처했을 때 보살에게 도움을 청하면 여러분을 구하러 올 것입니다. 보살은 끊임없이 삼매 중에 있으면서 도움을 청하는 소리를 살핍니다.
This Bodhisattva symbolizes non-sophistry awakening because you cannot fake your sound. She can listen to your sound and can tell whether or not you are sincere.
이 보살은 진실한 깨달음을 상징합니다. 왜냐하면 여러분은 소리를 가짜로 꾸며낼 수 없기 때문입니다. 보살은 여러분의 소리를 듣고 진심인지 아닌지를 알 수 있습니다.
3. Great Strength Bodhisattva (Mahasthamaprapta), he can cause the heavenly demon palaces to quake and shake; symbolizing contentment: reducing your desires. He has great spiritual penetrations. We don’t because we are filled with desires which are outflows and cause us to lose our strength. If we can lessen our desires until there are none left, we can also be as invincible as this Bodhisattva.
대세지보살 그는 하늘의 마궁전을 흔들 수 있습니다. 이것은 만족과 여러분의 욕망의 감소를 상징합니다. 그는 신통력이 뛰어납니다. 우리는 유루의 욕망으로 가득 차있어 힘을 잃기 때문에 신통력이 없습니다. 아무것도 남지 않을 때까지 욕망을 줄인다면 우리도 이 보살처럼 무적이 될 수 있습니다.
4. Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva (Aksayamati; knowing that the nature of all dharmas is inexhaustible he thus brings forth inexhaustible resolves 發心無盡; he also knows that empty space is inexhaustible, the false is inexhaustible and the middle is inexhaustible); he symbolizes Stillness Awakening because he contemplates the truth of non-duality. If you can realize non-duality, your mind no longer moves.
무진의보살: (모든 법성이 다함없음을 알고 그는 다함없는 마음을 발합니다. 發心無盡; 또한 그는 허공이 다함없고, 거짓이 다함없으며, 중간도 다함없음을 압니다); 그는 불이不二의 진리를 관하기 때문에 고요한 깨달음을 상징합니다. 만약 여러분이 불이를 깨달을 수 있다면, 여러분의 마음은 더 이상 동요되지 않습니다.
5. Jeweled Udumbara Flower Bodhisattva (there is a chandana tree made up of the 100 jewels, filled with flowers and foliage, full of fragrance; this symbolizes the Bodhisattva’s 10,000 practice causal flowers, adorning the Bodhi fruition tree); he symbolizes vigor Awakening because he vigorously cultivates the 10,000 conducts.
보단화보살 (꽃과 잎이 무성하고 향기가 가득한 100가지 보물로 이루어진 찬다나 나무입니다. 이 나무는 보살의 만행화萬行花를 상징하며 보리과를 장엄합니다.) 그는 만행을 열심히 수행하기 때문에 정진의 깨달음을 상징합니다.
6. Medicine King Bodhisattva (Bhaisajyaraja), from both of his hands, all sorts of medicine rain down. He massages and washes all living beings’ sicknesses, and gives them unobstructed Dharma medicine that expels body and mind of all evil. Those who venerate and take refuge with him obtain great self-mastery. He symbolizes Proper mindfulness because he pities and is mindful of the sick and suffering.
약왕보살 (두 손에서 온갖 약이 쏟아져 나옵니다. 그는 모든 중생의 병을 어루만지고 씻겨주며, 몸과 마음에서 모든 악을 내쫓고 중생들에게 장애 없는 법약을 제공합니다. 그를 존경하고 그에게 귀의한 사람들은 대자재大自在를 얻습니다. 그는 아프고 고통받는 사람들을 아끼고 염두에 두기 때문에 정념을 상징합니다.
7. Medicine Superior Bodhisattva (Bhaisajyasamudgata) specializes in giving wonderful, superior, tasty medicine. He symbolizes contentment Awakening because he helps living beings’ obtain proper livelihood. Buddhist disciples should rely and be in accord with the Proper Dharma, purify their three karmas (body, mouth and mind), and distance themselves from tantric skills, divination and the five deviant kinds of livelihood. They should rely and accord with the Dharma in seeking the essentials of life: food and drink, clothing, medicine and bed and shelter.
약상보살은 오묘하고 뛰어나고 맛있는 약을 전문으로 제공합니다. 그는 중생이 바르게 생활(정명正命)하도록 돕기 때문에 만족의 깨달음을 상징합니다. 불자들은 정법에 의지하고 이를 따르며 삼업(신, 구, 의)을 정화합니다. 밀교적 기교, 점, 5가지 삿된 생활을 멀리합니다. 그들은 삶의 필수품: 음식, 의복, 약, 주거지를 추구하는 데 있어서 법에 의지하고 이를 따릅니다.
8. Maitreya Bodhisattva symbolizes Chan Samadhi awakening because he entered the Consciousness Only Samadhi. Maitreya stands for “the kind clan 慈氏” because since he made the resolve for Bodhi, he never ate meat. Amongst all the various Dharmas of cultivation, He specialized on the dharma of kindness and aids living beings to not sever their Buddha seeds.
미륵보살은 유식삼매에 들었기 때문에 선정의 깨달음을 상징합니다. 미륵은 "자비로운 씨(慈氏)"를 의미하는데, 그가 보리를 결심한 이후로 고기를 먹지 않았기 때문입니다. 그는 여러 가지 수행법 중 자애법이 전문이며, 중생들이 부처의 씨앗을 자르지 않도록 도와줍니다.
Those eight great Bodhisattvas, by means of their spiritual powers, will appear in space before these people at their time of death to show them the way, leading them to rebirth in the Eastern Pure Land. And they will naturally be born by transformation in that land, amid precious flowers of a myriad colors.
이 8대 보살은 신통력으로 이분들이 임종 시에 허공에서 나타나 가는 길을 보여주며 동방정토에서 왕생하게 합니다. 그들은 극락세계의 빛깔 고운 연화대에 화생(化生)토록 합니다.
That Pure Land has a profusion of colorful flowers: green colored of green light, yellow colored of yellow light, red colored of red light, and white colored of white light. The eight great Bodhisattvas will guide cultivators to the Eastern Vaidurya Land, where they will be born purely and by transformation.
저 정토에는 녹색빛, 노란빛, 붉은빛, 흰빛 등 다채로운 빛깔의 꽃이 많습니다. 8대 보살은 수행자들을 화생으로 청정하게 태어나는 동방정토로 안내할 것입니다.
