The Vietnamese Version is virtually ready.
베트남어판은 사실상 준비되었습니다.
The English version, I don't know. my editors are working overtime and they're overzealous. They find so many things wrong with the way I write in English.
영문판은 모르겠어요. 편집자들이 오버타임으로 하고 있는데, 너무 지쳐버렸습니다. 이 사람들은 내가 쓴 영어 방식이 잘못된 것이 많다고 생각하네요.
They change a lot of my semantics and my stuff. So, hopefully, it should be done next week as well. After we're done next week, next weekend, following week, we will probably go to printing. Yesterday, last night, during the mantra session, I noticed this book here on our free books, our book’s table.
어제, 어젯밤 만트라 세션(주력수행)하는 중, 내가 여기 이 책을 우리 무료 책 나눔하는 탁자에서 봤습니다.
And very nice looking picture of a certain woman who calls herself a Bodhisattva.
어떤 여성분의 아주 멋진 사진이었는데, 스스로 보살이라고 칭합니다.
I took it away because we don't give out junk materials.
우리가 사람들에게 정크를 줄 수 없어서 내가 그걸 치웠습니다.
Okay? You come to our temple. If you find books that are inappropriate, you let me know. Because I will remove them. I will not. We are here to transmit the proper Dharma. Not junk stuff.
알았나요? 여러분이 우리 절에 올 때, 여러분이 적절하지 않은 책을 보면, 나에게 알려주십시오. 내가 그런 책들을 치워버릴 겁니다. 우리는 여기서 정법을 전합니다. 쓰레기같은 것은 안 됩니다.
So, that's why I remove this book. This is improper way of propagating. And relating to someone.

Okay? in this day and age, it’s so difficult for you to tell right from wrong, proper from deviant.
알았나요? 요즘같은 시대에, 여러분에게 어떤 것이 정법인지, 사법인지 알아보기 매우 어렵습니다.
And you have to learn as my masters put it, as the patriarchs put it.
나의 스승님이 말한 것과 마찬가지로, 조사 스님들께서 말한 것처럼,
You need to develop your Dharma selecting eye.
택법안을 키워야할 필요가 있습니다.
If you see it's in accord with the Dharma, then follow it.
다르마와 일치하는 것이라면 따르고,
If it's not in accord with the Dharma, don't follow it.
다르마를 순응하지 않는 것은 따르지 마십시오.
Okay. even in Master HsuanHua's disciples. He's the proper Dharma.
알았죠? 선화 상인의 제자들조차, 선화 상인은 정법입니다.
But his disciples are not necessarily the proper Dharma.
하지만 그의 제자들이 반드시 정법이지는 않습니다.
Okay. I would admit to you that if you go to his disciples.
그렇습니다. 내가 인정합니다. 여러분이 그의 제자들에게 가면,
Chances are that you find the proper Dharma there.
거기서 여러분이 정법을 찾을 가능성이 있습니다.
You have a good chance to find the proper Dharma there. So that's where it's a good place to go.
여러분이 거기서 정법을 찾을 수 있는 좋은 기회가 있습니다. 그래서 그곳은 좋은 곳입니다.
On the other hand, some of them are practicing improper Dharma. They're doing things that are inappropriate.
하지만 부적절한 법을 수행하고 있는 사람도 몇 있습니다. 이들은 부적절한 것들을 하고 있습니다.
It's for them. It's their problem, not our problem.
그건 그들의 문제이지, 우리 문제가 아닙니다.
We don't look at others' faults.
우리는 타인의 허물을 보지 않습니다.
When I speak comments about the Dharma, it's always about how to practice the Dharma, not about personalities.
내가 다르마에 대해서 언급할 때는 늘 다르마를 어떻게 실행할 것인지에 대한 것입니다. 개인의 인격에 대한 이야기가 아닙니다.
Okay? My interest is to transmit to you, to help transmit to you, pass on to you the Dharma as I learned it from the Patriarchs.
알았죠? 나의 관심사는 여러분에게 전해주는 것, 내가 조사 스님들로부터 배운 다르마를 여러분에게 전달하는 것입니다.
It's not about trying to seek fame or profit.
명성이나 이윤을 구하려고 노력하는 게 아닙니다.
I'm not trying to become famous, especially to become, have more notoriety than the true disciples of Master XuanHua’s, the Heng disciples.
나는 유명해지려고 노력하고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 특히 선화 상인의 진정한 제자들, “항” 제자들보다 말입니다.
I just learned a few things from him. That's all I know.
나는 그저 선화 상인에게서 몇 가지 배웠을 뿐입니다. 내가 아는 건 그게 전부입니다.
He only taught me directly four times.
선화 상인은 나에게 직접 딱 4번만 가르쳤습니다.
And his Heng disciples were in, spent more time, were under his training a lot more.
그리고 그의 “항” 제자들은 선화 상인의 훈련을 받으면 훨씬 더 많은 시간을 같이 보냈습니다.
Some of them hang around him for 15 years. 20 years, 30 years.

So they know a lot more than I do. So if you go there and you find such people, they will teach you a lot more.

Okay? Now, today is the day where, as per our tradition, the end of the month. The last weekend of the month. Therefore, we did our great compassion repentance.
알았죠? 지금, 오늘은 우리의 전통에 따라서, 월말이므로, 월 마지막 주말이어서, 대비참을 했습니다.
In order to repent of our karmic offenses.
업죄를 참회하기 위해서입니다.
Okay. Why do you need to repent?
어째서 참회해야 할까요?
You need to repent because, uh, because when you break precepts,
우리가 참회해야 하는 이유는 계율을 어기기 때문입니다.
Then you create offenses for you to fall to the hells and to lower realms.
죄를 지으면 지옥이나 다른 더 낮은 법계로 추락하기 때문입니다.
Okay?
알았죠?
And that's why it's important for you, lay people as well as left-home people, disciples of the Buddha, to understand a little better about the precepts.
그래서 재가자와 출가자 모두, 부처님의 제자들에게 계율에 대해서 좀 더 잘 이해하는 게 중요합니다.
Okay. In particular, we started to go on the Vietnamese TV.
특히, 우리가 베트남어 TV방송에 나가기 시작했는데,
And for some reason, the co-host forced me to talk about precepts.
무슨 이유인지 모르겠지만, 진행자가 나에게 계율에 관해서 말하게 만들었습니다.
One of the most boring topics you can ever talk about.
이게 이야기 할 수 있는 가장 지루한 주제 중 하나이잖아요.
You know, initially, the monks and nuns are supposed to spend the first five years of their lives learning about precepts.
애초에 비구, 비구니는 계율을 배우는 데 첫 5년을 지내야 합니다.
Nowadays, it's not done anymore.
요즘은 그렇게 하지 않아요.
That’s why, we in our small temple,
그래서 우리 작은 절에서
When the time comes,
때가 되면,
I plan to send my monks and nuns to Taiwan where they still have temples where they investigate the Vinaya.
나는 나의 비구, 비구니들을 대만에 보낼 계획입니다. 거기는 아직 비나야(계율)을 연구하는 사찰들이 있습니다.
Right now, the only places I know of in the world, where they actually study the precept marks.

We need to go there and learn it.

In order to bring it back here to America, the United States so that we contribute, further contribute to Mahayana.

And that includes women as well, not just men.

First, I'm trying to send Venerable XianJie.

And the women. Well, these women are too old.

어쩌면 다음에 들어오는 사람들은 몰라도…

알았죠?
They have to work.
이 사람들은 일해야만 합니다.
Each generation have to make their own sacrifices.
각 세대는 각자 희생해야할 부분이 있습니다.
You know, the generation of XianChi and XianJie. I didn't train them much.
현지 노스님과 현계의 세대, 내가 훈련을 많이 시키지 않았습니다.
They were too busy. Uh, and, uh,
이 스님들이 너무 바쁩니다.
We struggled for survival.
우리는 생존을 위해 발버둥쳤습니다.
We didn't have time.
시간이 없어요.
All I did was spend time training them on the Vinaya of the Novice Precepts.
내가 이들을 위해서 한 일은 사미, 사미니계 훈련에만 시간을 보냈습니다.
But it's fundamental.
하지만 그게 근본입니다.
Why?
왜일까요?
Because, my training, at my prior training, as a Novice Monk, we didn't learn about, you know, Shami Precepts. I didn't learn much about it.
왜냐하면, 나의 훈련, 나의 예전 훈련은, 사미로써, 사미계에 대해서 배우질 않았습니다. 그에 대해서 많이 배우지 않았습니다.
And therefore we need to make amends. And learn the proper precepts.
그래서 수정을 좀 해야 해서, 바른 계율을 배워야 합니다.

I don't want to talk too much.

Today, we spent a lot of energy reciting the Great Compassion Repentance.
오늘 우리가 대비참을 독송하는데 많은 에너지를 썼습니다.
It came to my attention recently.
최근 이게 내 관심을 끌었는데,
Within the last few weeks.
지난 몇 주 동안,
Since we started going on Vietnamese TV.

And by the way, I recommend, highly recommend that you follow the next the programs. TV programs. You Vietnamese follow TV programs. So next couple of months. I'll be discussing precepts.
그리고 참고로 다른 프로그램은 꼭 따라서 보길 권합니다. 앞으로 2달 정도 베트남 TV 프로그램을 보시길 바랍니다. 거기서 계율에 관해 말씀드릴겁니다.
For lay people. And a lot of stuff. Precepts as well.
재가자를 위해서요. 많은 이야기를 할거고, 계율에 관해서도요.
And it came to my attention.
그리고 이게 내 이목을 끌었는데,
That a certain website has been slandering me.
어떤 특정한 웹사이트에서 나를 비방하고 있습니다.
claiming that I break precepts and do improper things.
내가 계율을 어기고 부적절한 행위를 했다고 주장하면서요.
You don't have to worry about it. You know.
여러분은 그건 걱정 안하셔도 됩니다. 알잖아요.
They are so. I admit to people I break precepts every day still today.
나는 사람들에게 매일 계율을 어긴다고 인정합니다.
You don't need to go back 20 years to say I broke precepts. I break precepts every single day.
내가 계율 어긴 것에 대해서 20년 전으로 돌아갈 필요도 없습니다. 나는 매일 계율을 어깁니다.
It’s nothing new about that. Okay.
그게 뭐 전혀 새로운 일도 아닙니다.
That's the nature of precepts.
그게 계율의 본질입니다.
If you understand precepts, then you know what I'm talking about.
여러분이 계율을 이해한다면, 그러면 내가 무슨 말을 하고 있는지 알겁니다.
Okay. I find it pitiful that people criticize, engage in personal attacks and make claims that are unfounded.
알았죠? 나는 사람들이 비난하고, 인신공격하고, 근거 없는 주장을 하고 있는 걸 딱하게 여깁니다.
Because if you understand precepts at all. Okay.
왜냐하면 계율을 조금이라도 이해한다면,
They would not be talking about me like that, about my breaking precepts like that.
그 사람들이 나에 대해서 그렇게 말하고 있지 않을 것이고, 내가 계율을 어기는 것도 그렇게 말하지 않을 것입니다.
That shows that the way they address, they put it, shows that they don't understand precepts at all.
그게 이들이 말하는 방식이 계율을 전혀 이해하지 못한다는 걸 보여줍니다.
Because they never, never investigated precepts.
왜냐하면 그들이 한번도 한번도 계율을 연구한 적이 없으니까요.
So, in fact, these people. Especially the Vietnamese and the Chinese are breaking the bhikshu precepts and the Bodhisattva precepts. Big time.
그래서 사실 이 사람들은, 특히 베트남이나 중국인들이 비구계, 보살계 그런 것들을 어기고 있습니다. 크게요.
Ok? That's my, that's my gift to them.
알았나요? 이게 그들을 위한 나의 선물입니다.
Go repent. Because you are falling to the hells.
참회하십시오. 왜냐하면 지옥으로 추락하고 있기 때문입니다.
Your teacher cannot save you.
스승님이 여러분을 구해줄 수 없는 겁니다.

We disciples of the Buddhas, of the Patriarchs.

We don't attack monks and nuns.
비구나 비구니를 공격하지 않습니다.
Again, I said. I only comment on the methods of practice.
다시 말하지만, 나는 오직 수행의 방법에 대해서만 말합니다.
I've taught and trained people for the last eight years.
나는 지난 8년 간 사람들을 가르치고 훈련했습니다.
And I've always commented on how the Dharma should be practiced, not personalities. Okay?
That's inappropriate. Okay. Uh.
나는 늘 인격이 아니라 법을 어떻게 실행해야 하는지에 대해서만 언급해 왔습니다. 알았나요? (인격에 대해서 말하는 것은) 부적절합니다. 알았지요?
This shows “lack of rejoicing in other merits and virtues”.
그건 “타인의 공덕을 기뻐해주는 것이 부족(수희공덕)”하다는 걸 보여줍니다.
Next week, when I have more time, I explain, I tell you stories about how in the Buddha's time, his disciples rejoiced in others' merit and virtue. Okay?
다음 주 시간이 좀 더 나면 설명해 드리겠습니다. 부처님 시대에 제자들이 다른 사람의 공덕을 기뻐했던 방법에 대한 이야기를 들려 드리겠습니다 알았나요?
Don’t do that.
그러지 마십시오.
If people make mistakes, it's their problem. They fall to hell. There's no need. No need you to comment or to talk about it, to gossip about it.
사람들이 실수를 하면, 그건 그들의 문제입니다. 지옥에 떨어집니다. 그럴 필요가 없는 거에요. 여러분이 그것에 대해서 이야기하거나, 험담할 필요가 없는 겁니다.
Very, very fundamental.
아주, 아주 기본적인 일입니다.
Every week, I publish something for lay people, the non-Buddhists even.
매주, 나는 재가자들을 위해서, 심지어 비불교도인들을 위해서 발행하는 것이 있습니다.
And last week I published, I said, you know, you should be looking at people's strength.
지난 주 발행한 것은, 사람들의 강점을 봐야 한다고 했습니다.
When people are good at certain things, then look at their strength. And learn and imitate them.
사람들이 어떤 걸 잘 할 때, 그 힘을 보십시오. 그리고 그걸 배우고 모방하는 겁니다.
Okay. And you only look at your own weaknesses.
좋습니다. 그리고 여러분은 자신의 약점만 봅니다.
Don't look at other people's weaknesses. Okay.
다른 사람의 약점은 보지 마십시오.
That’s called “cultivation”.
그것을 “수행”이라고 부릅니다.
The monks and nuns who only go around and criticize others and talk highly of themselves,
돌아다니면서 다른 사람들을 비난하고, 자신은 높게 평가하는 비구와 비구니들은
They are not cultivating.
수행하고 있지 않습니다.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
그 사람들은 스스로를 부끄럽게 여겨야 합니다.
The Buddha, our teachers didn't want us to be like that.
부처님은, 우리의 스승님들은 우리가 그렇게 되길 원하지 않습니다.
That lacks virtue.
그건 덕이 부족합니다.
Okay. I hope you learn from that.
알았나요? 나는 여러분이 거기서 배우길 바랍니다.
Look at your own faults.
자신의 잘못을 보십시오.
People make mistakes is their problem.
사람들이 잘못하면 그건 그들의 문제입니다.
Don't get afflicted.
번뇌하지 마십시오.
Those people who come here and have improper behavior in order, it's only in order for you, for, to help you look at your own afflictions.
이곳에 와서 부적절하게 행동하는 사람들은, 오직 여러분이 자신의 번뇌를 볼 수 있게 도와주는 겁니다.
You should not be afflicted. Because when people are wrong,
번뇌롭지 말아야 합니다. 왜냐하면 사람들이 틀렸을 때,
that's called cultivation.
그걸 수행이라 부릅니다.
Okay. That's what cultivation is about.
그게 바로 수행입니다.
Many of them,
그들 중 많은 사람들이,
the last eight years, many of them failed my test.
지난 8년간, 그들 중 많은 수가 내 시험에 떨어졌습니다.
They failed my test and they left.
내 시험에 실패해서 떠났습니다.
Many of them are left-home people as well as lay people.
그들 중 많은 사람이 재가자뿐 아니라 출가자입니다.
Some of them are, some of them are, don't even last for more than three months.
그 중 일부는 3개월도 견디지 못했습니다.
I've been asking them to leave after three months.
내가 그들에게 3개월 후 떠나라고 말해줬습니다.
After three years, I asked this particular nun who came to steal the Dharma from me.
3년 후, 나는 나에게서 다르마를 훔치려고 온 이 어떤 비구니 스님에게 물어본 게 있는데,
So I was curious.
내가 호기심이 있었거든요.
I'm going to let you stay close to me for 3 years, as long as you can. It turned out to be 3 years. And see how much you can steal from me.
나는 3년 동안, 할 수 있는 한 최대한 당신이 나와 가깝게 지내게 해주겠다. 그게 3년이 된 겁니다. 그리고 나에게서 얼마나 많이 훔칠 수 있는 봤습니다.
After 3 years, you know what?
3년 후, 어떻게 되었는지 아나요?
Get nothing. Okay.
아무것도 얻지 못했습니다.
It's their problem.
그건 그들의 문제에요.
Okay. So, these people, many of them left.
알았죠? 그래서 이런 사람들이, 많이들 떠났습니다.
That's okay. It's understandable.

When you fail my test, it's very personal. You get pretty offended.

But, we cultivate.

That's what we do. That's what we do.

We are small. We're together and cultivate. Okay.

And I let you know a small secret.
작은 비밀을 알려줄게요.
The Chinese and Vietnamese have been slandering me for the last 20 years, the last 17, 18 years.
중국인들과 베트남인들이 지난 20년 간 나를 비방해왔습니다. 적어도 17년, 18년을 말입니다.
Their GongFu is lower than my disciples already.
그 사람들의 쿵푸가 이미 나의 제자들의 것보다 낮습니다.
So who's winning?
그러면 누가 이기고 있나요?
You guys are winning.
여러분들이 이기고 있는 거에요.
Because what matters is your achievement. Okay.
중요한 것은 여러분들의 성취입니다. 알았죠?
You cultivate, you get the results. Okay.
수행하면 결과를 얻을 수 있습니다.
They say whatever they want. Okay.
사람들이 말하고 싶은대로 말할 수 있습니다.
I have pity for them.
나는 그들이 불쌍합니다.
They cultivated for 25, 30 years under a great teacher.
훌륭한 스승님 아래에서 25년, 30년 수행했는데,
And they got nothing. They got nothing out of it.
아무것도 얻지 못했습니다. 거기서 얻은 것이 없습니다.
So little out of it.
거기서 너무 조금 밖에 얻지 못했어요.
So for you, who are still here, and who still have to face the big test.
그래서 여러분에게는, 아직도 여기 남은 사람은, 여전히 큰 시험을 직면해야 합니다.
Concentrate,
집중하십시오.
Okay. You plant your blessing. Okay.
알았나요? 복을 심어야 합니다.

복만 심는게 아니라, 큰걸 원한다면, 아주 멀리 가길 원한다면, 큰 복을 심어야만 합니다.
In time, you figure out what that means.
때가 되면, 그게 무슨 의미인지 알게 됩니다.
I, every time I got transmission of a major Dharma. It's because I created great merit and virtue.
내가 큰 법을 전수 받을 때마다, 그건 큰 공덕을 세웠기 때문입니다.
Okay. You need to have blessings to receive the transmission.
알았죠? 복이 있어야만 전수 받을 수 있습니다.
And number two. Live a virtuous life.
그리고 두번째는 덕있는 삶을 사십시오.
What is virtue?
덕이 뭔가요?
Virtue is you take a loss.
덕은 손해를 보는 것입니다.
You're not greedy for fame, or notoriety, and money.
명성이나, 평판, 돈을 탐하지 않는 것입니다.
Okay. That's what virtue is.
그게 덕입니다.
