Good evening, everyone. Our Chan practice is, I keep on telling you that, the very important part of the Chan practice to lay the foundation. Because how you build the foundation, determines how far you can go, how high you can reach. Ok? Therefore I found that my teacher, he lays out best foundation that could find in my research about teaching Chan.

모두들 좋은 저녁입니다. 우리의 선 수행은, 내가 여러분에게 계속 얘기하지만, 선 수행에서 매우 중요한 부분은 기반을 까는 것입니다. 왜냐면 여러분이 기반을 어떻게 쌓느냐가 여러분이 얼마나 멀리 갈 수 있을지, 얼마나 높이 도달할 수 있을지 결정하기 때문입니다. 오케이? 그래서 나는 나의 스승님이 선을 지도하는 것에 관해 내가 조사해서 찾을 수 있는 것 중 최고의 기반을 까셨단 걸 찾았습니다.

So what is the foundation of Chan? You heard it, you heard it before. It’s called rules of precept, rules of morality. So it is important when you practice Chan to remember what is about. Because if you keep precept, you will be able to still your mind. You will be at peace. At all times. Alright? It’s that simple. The reason why we have so many false thoughts in our mind, we are not that strict with our precepts, with our rules of morality. Ok.

그래서 선의 기반이란 무엇입니까? 여러분 전에 들어봤습니다. 그건 계율, 도덕 규칙이라고 부릅니다. 그래서 여러분이 선을 수행할 때 그게 무엇인지 기억하는 게 중요합니다. 여러분이 계율을 지킨다면, 여러분은 마음을 고요히 할 수 있을 겁니다. 평온할 겁니다. 언제나 말입니다. 알겠습니까? 그만큼 간단합니다. 여러분 마음 속에 망상이 그만큼 많이 있는 이유는 우린 계율에, 도덕 규칙에 엄격하지 않기 떄문입니다.

So my master has very very clever way of explaining precepts. Because in Buddhism, foundation of all the precepts is the laypeople’s five precepts. The five precepts for lay people. But actually it’s foundation of all the morality. Ok. In Buddhism. Ok. So tonight I would like to talk about how my master explains the five precepts. Thank you.

그래서 나의 스승님께는 계율을 설명하는 매우 매우 영리한 방식이 있습니다. 왜냐면 불교에서는 모든 계율의 기반은 재가자의 오계입니다. 재가자를 위한 오계입니다. 하지만 사실 그게 모든 도덕의 기반입니다. 오케이. 불교에서 말입니다. 그래서 오늘 밤 난 나의 스승님께서 어떻게 오계를 설명하셨지에 관해 얘기하고 싶습니다. 고맙습니다.

He explains it as the 6 principles. Because in Buddhism, we cannot explain 5 precepts to you unless you hold the precepts, unless you receive the precepts. We are not allowed to explain precepts to you. Ok. Unless you keep the precepts. However we cannot explain precepts to you, how are you gonna build a foundation for Chan? So my master thought of something called 6 principles which are the equivalent of the 5 precepts. Alright? So far so good?

So I read about the 6 principles long long time ago in English. It’s about maybe over 20 years ago, over 2 decades ago. Ok. And recently, past few weeks ago, I read it in English. His disciples translated it in one of these chapters in this book. It’s chapter called stillness. Ok. I’m amazed that it exactly sounds the things I read about 20 years ago.

The first principle is no fighting. He says why is it that the world is getting worse and worse everyday? It’s because everyone is fighting, fighting for fame, profit, authority and position. That fussiest fighting is which involves lust. People fight with themselves all the time, one moment they want to cultivate the way.

첫째 원칙은 싸우지 않는 것(부쟁)이다. 왜 세상이 날마다 점점 나빠지는 중인가? 그건 모두가 싸우고 있기 때문이다. 명성을 위해, 이익을 위해, 권위를 위해, 지위를 위해 싸우고 있기 때문입니다. 가장 떠들썩한 건 성욕이 관계되는 싸움이다. 사람들은 항상 본인과 싸운다. 어떤 한 순간에는 그들은 도를 수행하고 싶어한다.

Especially, particular you go to the temple, the kitchen of the temple. That’s where the most fussiest fighting, of course. In my humble opinion. Not the Chan hall, mind you. It is kitchen. It’s non stop fighting. Everyone who goes to the kitchen, they realize that they never realize that the people in the temple hate each other that much.

특히 여러분이 절에, 절의 공양간에 가면 말입니다. 물론 나의 겸손한 견해로는 그곳에서 가장 떠들썩하게 싸웁니다. 뭐랄까, 선당이 아니라 말입니다. 공양간입니다. 쉴 새 없이 싸웁니다. 공양간에 가는 모든 사람들은, 절 사람들이 서로를 그만큼이나 증오하는지 전혀 몰랐단 걸 알게 됩니다.

The next moment they want to strife the rich or they want good food to eat. At no time, they are peaceful within themselves. Why is that? Because you are seeking outside. It seems like your life is always lacking something. Like people asking hard questions. Because you feel something is always lacking. That’s why you always go and hold more things in your lives. Ok. You want more money, you want more fame, you want more power, you want better status. That is why people nowadays have no peace in their mind. The mind is always agitating.

그 다음 순간에는 부를 위해 싸우거나 좋은 음식을 먹고 싶어한다. 그들이 스스로 평온할 때란 전혀 없다. 왜 그런가? 왜냐하면 너희는 밖에서 구하고 있기 때문이다. 너희의 삶은 항상 무언가 결여된 것처럼 보인다. 어려운 질문을 하는 사람들처럼 말이다. 너희는 무언가가 항상 결여됐다고 느끼기 때문에 항상 가서 인생에 더 많은 것을 쥐고 있으려 한다. 오케이. 너흰 더 많은 돈을, 더 많은 명성을, 더 많은 권력을, 더 나은 지위를 원한다. 그래서 요즘 사람들은 마음 속에 평화가 없다. 마음이 항상 요동친다.

Alright? 알겠습니까?

Since people are full of fighting thoughts, they cannot get along with one another so they strife among the people. Confrontation and strife also happen among people. Because most of them are competing for personal advantages. Ok.

사람들이 싸우는 생각으로 가득해서 서로 함께할 수가 없다. 그래서 사람들끼리 투쟁한다. 사람들 간에 대결과 투쟁이 생긴다. 왜냐면 그들 대부분이 사적 이익을 위해 경쟁하고 있기 때문이다. 오케이.

When I went to business school, we learned the invisible hand. Adam’s theory. The invisible hand meaning that everyone is out for his profits. Ok. That’s the rule of the jungle in this society. Everyone is for himself or herself. So the big fish eat the small fish. That is the law of the jungle. You, too week, or too small, you will be eaten. That’s just life. Ok. And that’s we accepted as the norm of society.

내가 경영대를 다닐 때, 보이지 않는 손에 대해 배웠습니다. 아담의 이론입니다. 보이지 않는 손은 모두가 자신의 이익을 위한다는 뜻입니다. 그게 이 사회의 정글의 법칙입니다. 모두가 본인을 위합니다. 그래서 큰 고기가 작은 고기를 먹습니다. 그게 정글의 법칙입니다. 여러분이 너무 약하거나 너무 작다면, 잡아먹힐 겁니다. 그게 삶입니다. 오케이. 그게 우리가 사회의 규범으로 받아들이는 겁니다.

In Buddhism, we don’t accept it. In Buddhism, my master puts it, no fighting. Ok. Because you fight for personal gains. Ok. You fight to have your way. When you are like that, you plot day and night to get what you want. Yes, or no? We plot day and night to get what we want.

불교에서는 그걸 받아들이지 않습니다. 불교에서, 나의 스승님께서는 싸우지 말라고 하셨습니다. 오케이. 여러분이 사적 이득을 위해 싸웁니다, 여러분은 본인을 위해 싸웁니다. 여러분이 그러면, 여러분이 원하는 걸 얻기 위해서 밤낮으로 작당합니다. 그렇습니까? 우린 원하는 걸 얻기 위해 밤낮으로 작당합니다.

You know, for example. Nowadays you go to work. If you want that promotion, you want to fight for your project for your promotion, you need to plot day and night. You go home, you bring that fighting mind to your family. You bring it home. That we cannot stop. Yes, or no? No? That’s just life we accepted. Alright?

예를 들어서 여러분이 일하러 갑니다. 여러분이 승진을 원하면, 여러분은 승진을 위해 여러분의 프로젝트를 위해 싸웁니다. 그러면 여러분은 밤낮으로 작당해야 합니다. 여러분이 집에 가면 가족들에게 싸우는 마음을 가져갑니다. 여러분이 그걸 집으로 가져갑니다. 우린 그걸 멈출 수 없습니다. 맞습니까, 아닙니까? 네? 우린 그걸 인생으로 받아들입니다. 그렇습니까?

Why do they want to compete for advantages? Many of them do that out of sustain their family. Yes, or no? We take care, we fight in order to be able to provide for our family. Yes? And the foundation of family unit builds on sexual desire. In order to sustain sexual desire, people have the family for their own families. They need to fight and struggle.

왜 그들은 이익을 위해 경쟁하고 싶어하는가? 많은 이들이 그들의 가족을 부양하기 위해 그렇게 한다. 그렇지 않는가? 우린 가족을 부양하기 위해 싸우고 챙긴다. 그런가? 그리고 가족구성은 성욕을 기반으로 한다. 성욕을 유지하기 위해서 사람들은 자기만의 가족을 가진다. 그들은 싸우고 투쟁해야한다.

From mutual strife of family to strife among country, The reason for world’s ? remains by enlarge the same. It starts with contention with different citizens, within same country. Or even with different countries.

가족 간의 투쟁부터 나라 간 투쟁까지, 세상의? 이유는 같은 것을 더 크게 함으로써 유지한다. 같은 나라 내에서 다른 국민들끼리 싸우는 것으로 시작하거나 심지어는 다른 나라들과 싸운다.

Actually master Xuan Hua, they also notice this. The real reason for people to go to war, the countries to go to the war, is what? Anyone? Why people, countries go to war? Yes? (resources) Yes. Economic gain! Nowadays you invade a smaller country because of their resources. Ok. Their resources. And So master Xuan Hua say when you meditate, the first thing you need to stop is to stop this thought of fighting.

사실 선화상인은, 그들은 이것도 압니다. 사람들이 전쟁하러 가는, 나라들이 전쟁하러 가는 진짜 이유가 무엇입니까? 왜 사람들이, 나라들이 전쟁하러 갑니까? 네? (자원이요) 네, 경제적 이득입니다! 요즘에는 더 작은 나라들을 자원 때문에 침략합니다. 오케이. 그들의 자원 때문입니다. 그래서 선화상인께서는 여러분이 명상을 하면, 여러분이 첫 번째를 멈춰야하는 것은 싸우려는 이 생각을 멈추는 것이라고 하셨습니다.

We talk on meditation, we talk on cultivation. You have to stop these thoughts of fighting. Do not indulge, do not follow these thoughts of fighting. any questions? This is how my master explains the concept of fighting. Ok. Alright? So this is equivalents to the Buddhist precept of no killing. We cannot explain to you the precept of not killing. But we can elaborate on the concept of no fighting. Because non fighting is more subtle level of the killing.

우린 명상, 수행에 대해 얘기하고 있습니다. 여러분, 싸우려는 이 생각들을 멈춰야만 합니다. 싸우려는 생각에 골목하지 마십시오, 따라가지 마십시오. 질문 있습니까? 이것이 나의 스승님께서 싸움의 개념을 설명하는 방식입니다. 오케이. 알겠습니까? 그래서 이것은 불교의 불살생 계에 상당하는 겁니다. 우린 불살생계에 대해 여러분에게 설명할 수 없습니다. 하지만 우린 부쟁의 개념에 관해서는 더 자세히 설명할 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 부쟁은 살생의 더 미묘한 수준이기 때문입니다.

The fighting is the foundation of your mind of killing. Right? Agree or disagree? You kill because you want to have your way. Ok. That’s fighting right there. Why does a soldier kill? Besides ? orders. You kill, because the soldiers out of the instinct of survival. It’s not because he follows orders. Because he needs to survive. He doesn’t follow the order, he shots. It can be hurt so for matter of survival Ok. You must kill to protect yourself. Self preservation.

Ok? So you see, so you kill in order to preserve your own life. That is the spirit of fighting right there. You get your way. You don’t want to die. You want to live on. And you want to have your way. Any questions?

오케이? 그래서 여러분, 여러분은 자신의 생명을 보존하기 위해서 죽입니다. 바로 그것이 싸움의 정신입니다. 여러분은 자기 길을 갑니다. 여러분은 죽고 싶지 않습니다. 계속 살고 싶습니다. 그래서 여러분은 자기 식대로 하고 싶습니다. 질문 있습니까?

This is such a Chinese way of explaining no fighting. How does it apply to our western society? To the westerners. huh? Is that practical? Not to fight in the society as a normal person? How can you possibly not fight in order to function this society? Is that practical? Anyone? Is that practical?

부쟁을 설명하는 중국인의 방식이 이런 겁니다. 이제 우리의 서구 사회에 어떻게 적용됩니까? 서구인들에게 말입니다, 네? 실용적입니까? 사회의 보통사람으로 싸우지 않는 게 말입니다. 이 사회에서 기능하는데 싸우지 않는게 가능하긴 합니까? 실용적입니까? 누구 할 말 있습니까? 실용적입니까?

For example, ? how are you gonna get that raise unless you fight for it? Ok? Yes. (Master, seems like our society live a set up that someone has to win, someone has to lose) Right. It’s always a winner and a loser. It’s our own way. you have to either number 1, or number 2. Ok? Yes? That’s not just our society. That’s just the way it is. It is. Someone has to win, someone has to lose.

Then he discovered that there’s something stuck. So he stopped and he digged that area. What did he found? He found a pot filled with? (inaudible) Ya, she knew it right away. This woman has gold in her mind. (laugh) Just like Gou Yin has in her mind constantly, what does the pot have? Gold. What else? She said.

The real treasure. You can go on ebay and site selling by the piece. That’s what I would do. Agree, Billy? I mean how could you be, you know. We are so selfish, we don’t share the treasure. (laugh)
