Good evening everyone. Tonight we continue discussing the guiding principles that my master taught all of us, his disciples. Students of his lineage. Just review a little for those who are new. 

모두들 좋은 저녁입니다. 오늘밤에는 내 스승님께서 우리 모두에게, 그의 제자들에게, 그의 학생들에게 가르쳐주신 종지에 관한 논의를 이어가봅시다. 새로 온 분들을 위해 약간 리뷰를 해보자면,

Concept here is conditions and we as disciples are taught not to climb on conditions. Climb on conditions meaning that you take advantage of conditions are good to you, favorable to you. And you try to gain more benefits out of it.So you climb on top of these favorable conditions to you.

여기, 연이란 개념에서 우리 제자들은 반연하지 말라고 가르침 받았습니다. 반연이란 여러분이 여러분에게 좋은, 호의적인 연을 이용하는 겁니다. 그리고 그로부터 더 많은 이익을 얻고자 하는 겁니다. 그래서 여러분이 이 호의적인 연들 위에 타고 오르는 겁니다.

Second thing is that we are not supposed to make for conditions. In particular beg for food even though we are starving to death. These are the very fundamental basic needs of human beings. When you are freezing to death, and you are starving to death and you are so poor. It’s so destitute that it hurts.

두 번째는 연을 만들어서는 안 된다는 겁니다. 특히, 우리가 굶어 죽을지라도 음식을 구걸하지 말라고 하셨습니다. 이건 인간의 아주 근본적인, 기초적인 필요입니다. 여러분이, 얼어 죽을지라도 굶어죽을 지라도, 너무 가난해서, 아플 정도로 궁핍할 지라도 말입니다.

Have you ever been so poor that it really hurts? We are not supposed to seek conditions meaning that we seek favors from people that we didn’t have affinities with. We didn’t know before. Ok? So those are the 3 basic principles that my master taught us.

여러분 정말로 너무 가난해서 아파본 적 있습니까? 우리가 연을 구해선 안 된다는 뜻은, 우리와 인연이 없는 사람들, 우리가 전에 알지 못했던 사람들로부터 호의를 구한다는 겁니다. 그래서 그것들이 내 스승님께서 우리에게 가르쳐주신 세 가지 기초 원리들입니다.  

He talked about not climbing on conditions, not begging for help when we are in trouble and not creating, seeking good things from others, from strangers. Alright? Any questions about that?

선화 상인께서는, 연을 타고 오르지 말아라, 우리가 곤란에 처했다고 도움을 구걸하지 말아라, 다른 이들, 낯선 이들로부터 좋은 것들을 만들지, 구하지 말아라에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 알겠습니까? 거기 관련 질문 있습니까?

(inaudible) Yes. We are talking about, this is for. First of all, this is guiding principles for his left home people. Does it apply to lay people? Is it applicable to lay people? What do you think? (inaudible) No, climbing on conditions here meaning that they treat you favorably already. And you ask for more. You climb on top of that. You leap on. You use that and you increase more. You get more of the favors you’ve been extended to you.

여러분 어떻게 생각합니까? (청중 안 들림) 아니, 여기서 연을 타고 오른단 뜻은 그들이 여러분을 이미 호의적으로 대합니다. 그리고 여러분이 더 요구하는 겁니다. 그 위에 타고 오르는 겁니다. 여러분이 뛰어오릅니다. 그걸 이용하고 더 늘리는 겁니다. 여러분에게 온 호의를 더 얻는 겁니다.

So the favorability predisposed towards us. Now we use to create more benefits for ourselves. Benefits from it. That’s what climbing on conditions means. Now shouldn’t a lay person, does it apply to a lay person. Yes. (inaudible) 

그래서 그 호의가 우리에게 이미 기울어져 있습니다. 이제 우리 스스로 더 많은 이익을 짓기 위해 쓰는 겁니다. 그로부터 이익을 얻으려고. 그게 반연이 뜻하는 겁니다. 이제 재가자가, 재가자에게 그게 적용됩니까? 네. (청중 안 들림)

What happened to you? What happened to you? I’m just asking you. What happened to you recently? (Me?) Yes. (inaudible) Ok. Never mind. How does it apply to a lay person, not to climb on conditons, ok. Give an example of a lay person that would climb on conditions. Can you give an example? 

무슨 일입니까? 당신에게 무슨 일이 있었던 겁니까? 그냥 묻는 겁니다. 최근에 무슨 일 있었습니까? (저요?) 예. (청중 안 들림) 오케이. 신경 쓰지 마십시오. 그게 어떻게 재가자에게 적용됩니까, 불반연 말입니다. 오케이. 재가자가 연을 타고 오르는 예시를 주십시오. 예시를 들어주겠습니까?

See, the mistakes you are making, you are too theoretical. It’s best in these cases to give specific examples. of your life. Your personal life. Would you consider to be climbing on conditions? Whether it’s good thing for you or not?

여러분, 여러분이 저지르는 실수는, 여러분이 너무 이론적이란 겁니다. 이런 상황에서 최고는 구체적인 예시들을 들어주는 겁니다. 여러분 삶의, 여러분 개인적인 삶의 예시들 말입니다. 여러분은 반연한다고 여깁니까? 그게 여러분에게 좋건 안 좋건?

When you explain the Buddhadharma, I don’t profess to know how to explain the Buddhadhrama. But you explain the Buddha Dharma to Catholic. You need to be very specific. You cannot say generalities. You have to say specific things that are appropriate to this Catholics.

불법을 설명할 때, 내가 불법을 설명하는 방법을 알고 있다고 말하는 건 아닙니다만, 천주교인에게 불법을 설명하면, 여러분, 매우 구체적이어야 하는 겁니다. 일반적으로 얘기해선 안 됩니다. 이 천주교인에게 적합한 구체적인 걸 말해야 하는 겁니다.

Ok? Yes, anyone? Can you give me specific examples in your life where you would consider that to be climbing on conditions. (Ven.XC) So master Xian Chi gives us example. Let’s say you have some 3 days off. Ok. And then you see that the boss is favorably predisposed toward you. You asked for 4th day or 5th day. Ok? Even though you don’t have any more days left.

So you know that the boss likes you so you said you know it’s no big deal. I’m entitled to 3 days off. But I know the boss likes me therefore if I got for 4 or 5 days. I’m sure he squeezed in it. I mean it’s no big deal to him.

그래서 여러분은 상사가 여러분을 좋아하니까, 여러분은 그게 별 큰 일이 아니야, 하고 합니다. 난 3일 휴가지만, 상사가 날 좋아하니까, 4일이나 5일을 얻을 거야. 그가 맞춰 줄 거야, 내 말은, 그게 별로 대수가 아닐 거야, 라고 하는 겁니다.

He likes me so he’s gonna do it. It’s no big deal. Ok? Is that climbing on conditions? (Yes) Yes, that is. Is that good thing to do? Is that beneficial to you? (Vietnamese) The clue is that if it’s only for left home people, why would he make us recite during the ceremony, morning ceremony, evening ceremony. Both left home people, lay people recite together.

상사가 날 좋아하니까, 그렇게 해줄 거야, 별 대수 아니니까, 오케이? 그건 반연하는 겁니까? (네) 네, 그렇습니다. 그게 해서 좋은 일입니까? 그게 여러분에게 이롭습니까? (베트남어 청중) 단서는, 만약 그게 출가자만을 위한 거라면, 왜 선화 상인께서 예불 중에, 아침 예불 저녁 예불에서 출가자 재가자 둘다 함께 외우게 하셨겠습니까?

Right, the clue right there is also applies to lay people as well. Why the lay people also do that? Let me change the subject a little bit for you? Why should lay people do this? You don’t climb on conditions, you don’t beg. You don’t create new conditions. Ok. 

네, 바로 그 단서는, 재가자에게도 적용된다는 겁니다. 왜 재가자도 그렇게 합니까? 여러분을 위해 주제를 약간 바꿔보겠습니다. 왜 재가자가 이렇게 해야하는 겁니까? 반연하지 말라, 구걸하지 말라, 새로운 연을 만들지 말라, 오케이.

Why is that? Why should that also apply to lay people. (Vietnamese) She said you preserve your integrity, your dignity. Ok. This is the basic, fundamental comportment. Fundamental value system. What is a human being about, what is human being about?

That’s what he’s talking about. Do not climb on conditions. Do not create conditions, do not seek conditions. That is the core human value system. We are not talking about virtue yet. As a human being, we should be like that. Agree or disagree?

선화 상인께서 얘기하시는 게 그런 겁니다. 연을 타고 오르지 말라. 연을 짓지 말라. 연을 구하지 말라. 그게 인간의 핵심적인 가치 체계입니다. 우린 아직 덕을 얘기하지 않습니다. 인간으로써 우리가 그와 같아야 하는 겁니다. 동의합니까?

Yes or no? (Yes) Why? Why would lay person not climb on conditions? Why shouldn’t a lay person not climb on conditions? Not create conditions. Not seek conditions? Not beg? Why is it fundamental to the core value system of human being?

맞습니까? (네) 왜 그렇습니까? 왜 재가자가 연을 타고 오르지 말아야 하는 겁니까? 왜 재가자가 연을 타고 오르지 말아야 하는 겁니까? 연을 짓지 말아야 하는 겁니까? 연을 구하지 말아야 하는 겁니까? 연을 구걸하지 말아야 하는 겁니까? 왜 그게 인간의 핵심적인 가치 체계의 근본인 겁니까?

(Ven.XC) (Vietnamese) Yes. (inaudible) Ok. What’s wrong with taking advantage of others? You don’t, others will. Right? Why not? I mean, you don’t take it, others will. You don’t pick up the apples, someone else will pick it up. The birds will eat it. 

(현지노스님) (베트남어 청중) 네. (청중 안 들림) 오케이. 다른 이들을 이용하는 게 뭐가 문제입니까? 여러분이 안 그러면 다른 사람들이 그럴 텐데. 맞습니까? 왜 안 됩니까? 내 말은, 여러분이 이용 안 하면, 다른 사람들이 할텐데. 여러분이 사과를 안 주우면 다른 누군가가 주울 겁니다. 새가 먹을 겁니다.

No, no. What is that called? Lo Quat. Every year. As soon as the Lo Quat becomes orange, meaning it’s ripe. It’s very sweet. If you wait a half a day longer, then the bird will come and eat it off the trees. Ok?

아니, 그걸 뭐라 부르더라, 비파나무 열매. 해마다 비파나무 열매가 오렌지처럼 되면, 익었다는 겁니다. 그건 매우 달콤합니다. 하루 반나절을 기다리면 새가 와서 그 나무를 먹어치웁니다. 오케이?

(Vietnamese) Yes? (inaudible) What is wrong with just climbing on conditions. Let’s say that people are good to you already. Why would not take advantage of it? Becase if you take advantage of it, you bring more salary, more money for your family. Why don’t you do that?

(베트남어 청중) 네? (청중 안 들림) 그냥 반연하는 게 뭐가 문제입니까? 그 사람들이 이미 여러분에게 잘해준다고 해봅시다. 왜 그 기회를 이용해선 안 됩니까? 왜냐면, 여러분이 그걸 이용하면, 여러분이 더 많은 월급을, 더 많은 돈을 여러분 가족에게 가져다줄 수 있습니다. 왜 안 그러겠습니까?

I ask you, very simple question ok. Why don’t we as a lay person, given the favorable treatment from your boss, for example. Climb on that, take advantage of that so that you get a raise, get an increase in salary of promotion, whatever. So now you bring more home.

내가 여러분에게 매우 단순한 질문을 묻고 있는 겁니다. 오케이, 우리가 재가자로써, 상사로부터 예를 들어 호의적인 대우를 받고 있는데, 그걸 타고 오르면, 그걸 이용하면 월급이 오르고, 승진해서 월급이 늘고, 등등을 이제 집에 가져다 주는 겁니다.

Why not? Yes. (greed) What’s wrong with greed? Greed is good. How can you make profit without greed? Look at that, we are greedy to improve our Samadhi power. Yes or no? Yes? Venerable Sang Wook. Aren’t you greedy to have more Samadhi power? (yes) Yes, shame on you. (laugh)

왜 안 됩니까? 네. (탐심이요) 탐심이 뭐가 잘못됐습니까? 탐심은 좋습니다. 탐심 없이 어떻게 이익을 창출할 수 있겠습니까? 보십시오, 여러분은 우리 선정력을 증진하는데 탐욕스럽지 않습니까? 맞습니까? 상욱스님, 선정력을 더 얻는데 탐욕스럽습니까? (네) 네라니, 창피한 줄 아십시오. (웃음)

This is terrible. (Vietnamese) Anyone else? Yes, sir. (inaudible) You said, no, oh, oh. My wife will leave me. You don’t give me promotion. (that’s too much) My girlfriend will not marry me. You don’t do that. It’s ok to get a promotion but not to get a raise with. (inaudible)

끔찍하군. (베트남어 청중) 누구 다른 사람? 네, 남자분. (청중 안 들림) 여러분은, 아뇨, 오, 제 아내가 절 떠날 거예요, 절 승진시켜주지 않으시면은. (그건 무린데요) 그렇게 안 해주시면 제 여자친구가 저랑 결혼 안 해줄 거예요. 승진하려고는 되지만, 월급 인상 받는 건 안 된다고? (청중 안 들림)

Ok, so you all understand but you have hard time to explaining. See, you like these things, excited. Wow it sounds good. Yes, you like it right? How many people you see who are like that? Let me ask you. LEft home people, anyone. I don’t care. Everyone, anyone who met, who doesn’t climb on conditions, does not beg. Beg meaning that does not create conditions and seeking conditions. Really? 

그래서 여러분은 모두가 이해는 하지만, 설명하는 데는 힘들어하는군. 보십쇼, 여러분은 이런 걸 좋아합니다, 흥분해 합니다. 와우, 좋은데. 네, 여러분 그걸 좋아하지 않습니까? 여러분은 그런 사람들을 얼마나 많이 봅니까? 묻겠습니다, 출가자들, 누구 있습니까. 난 신경 안 씁니다. 만났던 사람들 중에, 연을 타고 오르지 않은 사람, 구걸하지 않는 사람 봤습니까? 구걸하지 않는단 건 연을 만들지 않는다, 연을 구하지 않는다는 겁니다. 있습니까?

(Master) I’m like that? What is your name again? (laugh) That is called climbing on conditions. There aren’t many people like this because they lack wisdom. This is the description of someone not just the integrity but actually who has wisdom.

(마스터요) 내가 그렇다고? 네 이름이 뭐였더라? (웃음) 그건 반연이라고 한단다. 이런 사람들이 많지 않습니다. 왜냐면 지혜가 없기 때문입니다. 이건 그저 양심이 아니라, 사실 지혜가 있는 사람들에 대한 설명입니다.

They can do this because they have wisdom. Ok? If you tell me that for me to try to get promotion from my boss, it’s an act of wisdom. definitely, go for it. You agree with me or not? If you do that out of wisdom, absolutely. I would go for it. If you do it out of greed, of selfishness, then you are not a very good person. You are unremarkable person.

그들은 지혜가 있기 때문에 이렇게 할 수 있습니다. 오케이? 여러분이 내게 상사로부터 승진을 얻으려고 한다면, 그게 지혜로 하는 행동이면, 분명 그걸 좇으십시오. 여러분, 동의합니까? 여러분이 지혜로부터 그렇게 하는 거라면, 나라면 그렇게 할 겁니다. 여러분이 탐심으로부터, 이기심으로부터 그렇게 하는 거라면, 그럼 여러분은 아주 선한 사람이 아닌 겁니다. 여러분은 그저그런 사람입니다. 

You are just like everyone else. Yes or no. Yeah. (Vietnamese)You know, I have to paraphrase her. You know, a normal person, an educated person, a smart person. they would look at us, I will not climb on conditions. They laugh at you. You have to be stupid. What’s wrong with you? How can you not climb on conditions? Are you stupid or something?

여러분은 다른 모든 사람과 마찬가지인 겁니다. 맞습니까. 네. (베트남어 청중) 여러분, 내가 그녀가 한 말을 다시 해보겠습니다. 여러분, 일반적인 사람들은, 교육받은 사람들, 똑똑한 사람들은 우릴 보고, 반연을 하지 않겠다고하면 비웃을 겁니다. 당신 멍청한 게 틀림없어. 당신 뭐가 문제야? 어떻게 반연하지 않을 수가 있어? 멍청이라도 되는 건가?

The opportunity comes, you are not gonna seize it? Take advantage of it? Ok? But why would you not climb on conditions? You don’t need to climb on conditions. That’s the whole point. Ok. What’s better than climbing on conditions? (Accord with conditions)

기회가 왔는데 그걸 잡지 않을 거라고? 이용하지 않을 거라고? 오케이? 하지만 왜 반연하지 않을 겁니까, 여러분? 여러분, 반연할 필요 없습니다. 그게 전체 요점입니다. 오케이. 반연보다 더 좋은 게 뭡니까? (연을 따르는 거요)

Instead of climbing on conditions, why don’t you work harder. Why don’t you work harder? Why don’t you put in more hours, why don’t you be more creative? Why don’t you increase your performance? Isn’t it better than trying to kiss up the boss and trying to get some advantages?

연을 타고 오르기 대신, 더 열심히 일하는 게 어떻습니까? 더 열심히 하는 게, 시간을 더 쏟는 게, 더 창의적으로 되는 게 어떻습니까? 여러분 퍼포먼스를 더 증진하는 게 어떻습니까? 그게 상사한테 아첨하는 것보다, 이익을 얻어내려고 하는 것보다 더 낫지 않습니까?

You kiss up to your teacher so that you get more favors, ok? Why don’t you just sit longer? 3-5 hours. Maybe you fast for 18 days. You know, why don’t you do that? You get a lot more out of it than climb on conditions. To climb on conditions is an inferior approach to gain more benefits.

사부님한테 아첨해서 여러분이 호의를 얻으려고 합니다, 오케이? 그냥 더 오래 앉는 게 어떻습니까? 3-5시간 말입니다. 아마 18일 정도 단식해보는 게 어떻습니까? 여러분, 그렇게 해보지 그럽니까? 반연하는 거보다 더 많은 걸 얻을 겁니다. 반연은 이익을 더 얻기 위해서는 마땅찮은 방법입니다.

You see, you have to remember the basis of our society is society of meritocracy. Because of the fact you kiss up to your boss and you get a promotion, for example. But how long you can stay there when you cannot perform?

여러분, 우리 사회의 기초는 능력주의 사회란 걸 기억해야 합니다. 예를 들어, 여러분이 상사에게 아첨해서 승진했다면, 여러분이 능력이 없는 데 얼마나 더 버틸 수 있겠습니까?

See, it’s not advisable to take advantage of situation. Instead of doing that, deliver a better performance. That’s much better way than to climb on conditons. Agree or disagree?

그러니 상황을 이용하는 건 권할 만한 게 아닙니다. 그렇게 하는 대신에 더 좋은 성과를 내십시오. 그게 반연보다 훨씬 더 좋은 길입니다. 동의합니까?

Why would people stoop? Why would you kiss up and try to climb on conditions when you should be, your fundamental will be performing better as a person, as a contributing member of the society.

사람들은 왜 자기를 낮추는 겁니까? 한 사람으로써, 사회에 기여하는 일원으로 더 좋은 성과를 내야하는 게 근본이어야 하는데, 왜 아첨하고 반연하려는 겁니까?

(Vietnamese) Ok. #2, it’s about 화연, 화연 meaning not begging. He’s talking about you are starving to death, you don’t beg for food, you don’t beg for drinks. Ok? What does it mean? Why don’t you do that? 

(베트남어 청중) 오케이, 두 번째는 화연입니다. 화연은 구걸하지 말란 겁니다. 선화상인께서는 굶어죽을지라도 음식을 마실 걸 구걸하지 말라고 하셨습니다. 오케이? 그게 무슨 뜻입니까? 왜 그러지 말아야 합니까?

Because you lose your dignity. Why would you beg? People give to you because deserve it not because you beg them. Wouldn’t you rather people give to you because you deserve to be given to? Instead of because people feel that you are such a loser. Ok, here. Here’s 1 dollar. Go and buy yourself something.

왜냐면 존엄을 잃기 때문입니다. 왜 구걸합니까? 사람들이 당신에게 주는 건, 당신이 받아 마땅해서이지, 당신이 그들에게 구걸했기 때문이 아닙니다. 당신이 받아 마땅하기 때문에 사람들이 당신에게 주는 게 더 낫지 않습니까? 사람들이 당신이 루저라고 느껴서 여기, 1달러, 자. 가서 뭐 사 먹어, 라고 하는 대신에?

Where is your pride? Where is your self-respect? Why would you reduce your self-worth for a bite of food, for a drop of water? Why would you do that to yourself? How can you look at yourself in the mirror? Agree or disagree? Right? It’s so fundamental? Why would you degrade yourself?

여러분 자존심 어딨습니까, 자존감 어딨습니까? 왜 음식 한 입으로, 물 한 방을로 자기 가치를 낮춥니까? 왜 스스로에게 그렇게 합니까? 어떻게 거울 속 자기를 쳐다볼 수 있겠습니까?동의합니까? 맞습니까? 아주 근본적이지 않습니까? 왜 스스로 낮추려 합니까?

So now you are hungry, you beg for food. And tomorrow you are hungry again, and you beg for food again. So everyday you what, you depreciate yourself, you degrade yourself for the sake of food. What kind of life is that? Why would you live like that? Huh? You should go into fasting. Come to Lu Mountain and fast for a few days. Instead of degrading yourself. Make sense? 

그래서 지금 여러분이 배가 고파 음식을 구걸합니다. 내일 다시 배가 고파 다시 음식을 구걸합니다. 그래서 매일 여러분이 스스로 가칠 낮추는 겁니다, 여러분이 음식 때문에 스스로 절하시킵니다. 그런 게 무슨 인생입니까? 왜 그렇게 살려는 겁니까? 허? 단식하십시오. 노산사 와서 며칠 간 단식 하십시오, 스스로 절하시키는 대신에. 이해했습니까?

#3, why would you not seek conditions? Why would you not seek conditions? You are selfish, you seek conditions because you are so selfish. You think of yourself. You are too selfish. Ok? Alright?

세 번째, 여러분 왜 연을 구하지 말아야 하는 겁니까? 왜 연을 구하지 말아야 합니까? 여러분은 이기적입니다. 여러분이 너무 이기적이라서 연을 구합니다. 여러분 자기만 생각합니다. 너무 이기적입니다. 오케이? 알겠습니까?

What does it have to do with left home people. This is talking about any human being. Agree or disagree? It’s not always possible. But depending on your level of wisdom, depending on what else? Depending on your level of blessings. Alright?

그게 출가자만 그런 게 아니라, 이건 모든 사람에게 관한 얘기입니다, 동의합니까? 항상 가능한 건 아닙니다, 하지만 여러분의 지혜의 단계에 따라 달려있습니다. 다른 뭐에 또 달려있습니까? 여러분 복의 단계에 따라 달려있습니다. 알겠습니까?

Instead of begging, why don’t you accrue blessings? Isn’t it better you go create blessings instead of using your blessing by begging? See, people are confused. Upside down. They say if I beg for $1, I stand at street corner and put a sign up there, you know, Wei Mountain under remodeling, please help.

자선 일을 하십시오, 보시를 행하십시오. 자기 복을 다 써버리는 대신에 복을 지으십시오. 그건 삶에 대한, 어떻게 사는 지에 대한 이해가 모자란 겁니다. 부를, 명성을, 성공을 구하는 사람들은 실제로는 자기 복을 고갈시키는 겁니다.

There’s no need to seek. Yes? Yes. (inaudible) It’s called 화연. The monks create conditions by begging for food. Alright? Ok? The left home people go and beg for food. Because they want to create conditions with those with whom has no affinities.

구할 필요 없습니다. 네? 네. (청중 안 들림) 그걸 화연이라 부릅니다. 출가자들은 음식을 구걸해서 연을 짓습니다. 알겠습니까? 오케이? 출가자들이 가서 음식을 구걸합니다. 왜냐면 그들은 인연이 없는 사람들과 연을 짓고 싶어하기 때문입니다.

You are in the state of unmoving suchness. And yet you still are able to accord with conditions. What does it mean? It means that, it means that you are capable of, you are at the level where you are able to sit in Samadhi. Ok. And yet you are able to go to distant places. And accord with conditions.

여여부동한 경계에 있지만, 그러면서도 여전히 연에 따를 수 있는 겁니다. 그게 무슨 뜻입니까? 그건 여러분이 삼매 속에 앉아 있는 단계에 있습니다. 오케이. 그러면서도 먼 곳에 갈 수 있습니다, 연을 따를 수 있습니다.

For example, Amitabha Buddha. Anyone heard of Amitabha Buddha? The Buddha, that Buddha? That Buddha, right there. This one, right here. (마스터 합장) Ok, the Buddha, here. That Buddha. My favorite Buddha.

그러면서도 아미타 부처님께서는 삼매 속에 계십니다. 그러니 앉아 명상하고 계십니다, 선을 하고 계십니다. 오케이? 그러면서도 그의 제자들은 아미타부처님께서 설법하고 계신 걸, 가르치시고 계신 걸 봅니다. 그게 불변수연의 뜻입니다. 이건 불교에서 아주 높은 수준인 겁니다.

And also people in the Saha world, this happen in the world so far away called western bliss pure land. What about in our world, Saha land where we are right now. Where is Amitabha Buddha. You see them coming. They see the Amitabha Buddha bringing a lotus dais over and saying ‘would you like to go to the pure land with me?’

그리고 사바 세계 사람들은. 이건, 서방극락세계라는 아주 멀리 있는 세계에서 벌어지는 일입니다. 우리 여기 지금 당장 있는 사바세계는 어떻습니까? 아미타부처님은 어디 계십니까? 여러분은 그들이 오는 걸 봅니다, 아미타 부처님께서 연좌대를 가지고, 나랑 같이 정토 가겠느냐? 라고 하시는 걸 봅니다.

Ah, we see them. We see them coming. And you know, the Buddha doesn’t even say anything. But you hear, you are sitting there, he’s standing there with this aura of compassion, kindness and compassion. And yet you hear in your ears, ‘would you like to go to the pure land with the Buddha, with the Thus Come One’ Alright?

This is a state of numero Uno. This is the state of Buddha. See, he’s maybe in Samadhi, may be meditating, but when the condition you have with him mature, you see him coming to rescue you, to save you. Why do you need to climb on conditions? Create conditions with him.

이건 제일의 경계입니다. 부처님의 경계입니다. 보십시오, 아미타부처님께선 삼매 속에 계실 지라도, 명상 중이실지라도, 여러분이 아미타부처님과의 연이 무르익으면, 여러분을 구하러, 구원하러 와주시는 걸 봅니다. 왜 반연해야 하는 겁니까? 아미타부처님과 연을 지으십시오.

So when these conditions, the seeds mature, the causes mature, then he will come and take care of you. Why do you have to be greedy? Why do you have to seek? So you only simply create, you want to go to the pure land, create a lot a lot more conditions with him so that they mature more, mature more quicker.

그래서 이 연이, 그 씨앗이 무르익으면, 그 원인이 무르익으면, 그러면 아미타부처님께서 오셔서 여러분을 보살펴주실 겁니다. 왜 욕심을 내야만 하는 겁니까? 왜 구해야만 하는 겁니까? 그러니 여러분 단지 간단하게, 정토에 가고 싶다면, 아미타부처님과 연을 엄청 엄청 더 짓으십시오, 그래서 그것들이 더 많이 더 빨리 무르익도록 말입니다.

Let me offer to you that it’s not your innate, your ability. But actually your fundamental lined work which is. What is your work? What is your fundamental work? To help others.Never mind about saving living beings. How about just helping others. You buy that, huh?

Yes or no? The people who say my life is about helping myself. Yes? And my teacher said no, it’s not. It’s not about benefiting yourself, helping yourself but it’s about helping others should be your fundamental duty, your fundamental work.

그렇습니까? 내 삶은 나 스스로를 돕는 거야, 라고 하는 사람들이 있습니다. 맞습니까? 그리고 내 스승님께선 아니다, 그게 아니다, 스스로를 이롭게 하기 위해서가 아니라, 스스로를 돕기 위해서가 아니라, 남을 돕는 게 여러분의 근본적인 의무, 근본적인 일이어야만 한다, 라고 하신 겁니다.

The fundamental work of any beings, any human being is help others as much as possible. Not serving ourselves. The fundamental work should be to serve others, to help others. Ok? That’s how I see it. The fundamental work here is the fundamental work of any person is not about helping yourself but about the helping others.

모든 존재의, 모든 인간의 근본적인 일이란 최대한 남을 돕는 겁니다. 스스로를 위한 게 아니라. 본사는 남을 위해 일하는 것, 남을 돕는 것이어야만 합니다. 오케이? 난 그렇게 봤습니다. 여기서 본사는 모든 사람의 본사는 스스로가 아닌 남을 돕는 겁니다. 

Start first with your family. Then your friends. Keep on expanding, expanding and expanding. That should be the fundamental work. Not about elevating yourself like Richard. That’s not fundamental work. It’s not becoming famous, becoming better than anyone but helping others. Agree or disagree?

선화상인께선 그 얘길 하시는 겁니다. 내 생각엔 말입니다. 기술이 아닙니다. 오케이? 여기 동의합니까? 오케이, 여러분이 동의한다치고, 여러분이 인생의 목적이 남을 돕는 거란 거에 동의한다 칩시다. 그럼 여러분이 그걸 조명을 함으로써 하는 겁니다. 조명이 무슨 뜻입니까?

Let me propose this. I kept the word mold. You mold if you want to help others. What is the best way to help others? How? How? Yes. (inaudible) Help yourself, yes. What else? And then what? (inaudible) Get married? Have babies? what? Your own abilities? Ok. You are holding your skills, ok.

조명, yes. You mold yourself after the people who succeeded in helping others. You find yourself a role model, using today’s language. You find yourself a role model and you try to imitate that. Yes. (inaudible) You agree? 

조명이란, 네. 남을 돕는 것에 성공한 사람들을 따라 스스로 주조하는 겁니다. 여러분이 요즘 말로 여러분 스스로 롤모델을 찾는 겁니다. 여러분이 자기 롤모델을 찾아서 그걸 모방하려는 겁니다. 네. (청중 안 들림) 동의합니까? 

You cannot, see people say I want to help others. But how are you gonna help others? So I propose to you. And this is very Mahayana by the way. This is very very Mahayana, ok. You pattern, you mold your life, you pattern yourself. You imitate the great success.

여러분은 못 합니다. 여러분, 사람들은 남을 돕고 싶다고 합니다, 하지만 어떻게 도울 겁니까? 그래서 여러분께 제안합니다. 그리고 그나저나 이건 매우 대승입니다. 이건 매우 매우 대승입니다. 오케이. 여러분이 자기 삶을 재단하는 겁니다, 주조하는 겁니다. 스스로 재단하는 겁니다. 여러분이 훌륭한 성공을 모방하는 겁니다.

Walk the same tread, the same path. Why do you have to reinvent the wheel? See, the patriarchs, the great Bodhisattvas, the great personalities in the world have created pathway already. Why do you have to create a new one? With unproven track record? Hmm? Why do you have to? It’s not necessary.

같은 발걸음을, 같은 길을 걷는 겁니다. 왜 이미 있는데 다시 발명해야 하는 겁니까? 조사스님들, 대보살님들, 세상의 위대한 사람들을 보십시오, 그들이 이미 길을 만들어놓으셨습니다. 왜 새로 만들어야하는 겁니까? 증명된 기록이 없는데? 음? 왜 그렇게 합니까? 그럴 필요 없습니다.

Personally I prefer to imitate. I would personally find the best person, best role model I can find and merely imitate that, pattern myself after that. Study that person. And see how I can mold myself after that pattern. Yes or no?

개인적으로 난 모방하는 걸 선호합니다. 개인적으로 난 내가 찾을 수 있는 최고의 사람, 최고의 롤모델을 찾아서 그걸 따라 단순히 그걸 모방하는 걸, 나 자신을 재단할 겁니다. 그 사람을 공부할 겁니다. 그 모범을 따라 스스로 주조할 수 있는지 볼 겁니다. 맞습니까?

So for example, how do you mold yourself? How do you mold your life? By? How have I been molding my life. 동사불반연 아사불화연 궁사불구연. I still fail at these 3 principles. My life, I still can’t do this. Ideal is so high, it’s so broad. It’s so profound. You are still for short.

그래서 예를 들어, 어떻게 스스로 주조합니까? 어떻게 자기 인생을 주조합니까? 뭘로? 내가 어떻게 내 인생을 주조해왔습니까? 동사불반연 아사불화연 궁사불구연. 난 여전히 이 세 종지에 실패합니다. 내 삶에선 여전히 이렇게 할 수 없습니다. 이상이 너무도 넓고 광대하고 깊습니다. 여전히 못 미칩니다.

(inaudible) Absolutely. Yes. I have disciples who used to look up to Ma Zu. Taiwainese deity. You know, Taiwanese deity.

(inaudible) I don’t have any master. I am my own master. (inaudible) But the Buddha is dead. This gentle man says that why would I want to follow, isn’t that dangerous to follow someone? Isn’t it? (It is dangerous) So who do you follow sir? (Me?) Yes, who do you follow? Yourself? Pretty much.

If you feel that someday, right now, when we were younger, we said I believe in myself. I believe in my brain power. I believe in my knowledge. I believe in my intellect. That’s fine. Ok. Because that’s the best thing I know.

You used to be a Catholic. You used to believe in god because god’s better than you. Now you think you are better than god. (laugh) (inaudible) says who? Says who? you said something very absolute. How do you base, what do you base your absolute belief on, what proof do you have?

(inaudible) If you meditate, you practice Chan, someday you see that god is not the highest person. You see it for yourself. You don’t meditate, you can believe anything you want. But the meditation, Chan meditation is the technique, way of life. And methodology that enables you to verify the things you hear, to check your prior believes. 

(청중 안 들림) 당신이 명상을 하면, 선을 수행하면, 어느 날 신이 가장 높은 사람이 아니란 걸 봅니다. 당신 스스로 볼 겁니다. 당신이 명상을 하지 않으면, 당신이 원하는 대로 믿을 수 있습니다. 하지만 명상은, 선 명상은 당신이 들었던 게 진실임을 증명해보는, 당신이 전에 가졌던 믿음을 확인 해보는 기술입니다, 삶의 방식, 방법론입니다. 

Wouldn’t you like to know? Wouldn’t you like to double check for yourself? What if you are wrong? There’s always possibility logically you could be right, you could be wrong. Right? Could be neither. Right? You could be neither right or wrong. 4 cases.

알고 싶지 않습니까? 당신 스스로 재확인해보고 싶지 않습니까? 만약 당신이 틀렸다면? 논리적으론 항상 당신이 맞을 가능성도, 틀릴 가능성도 있습니다. 혹은 둘 다 아니거나. 아님 맞지도 틀리지도 아닌 게 아닐 가능성도 있습니다. 네 가지 경우가 있는 겁니다.

You now assume you are right, you are not including 3 possibilities. That’s rather dangerous. So Chan is the way of practice where you actually see who god is, what he looks like. How tall he is. How big he is. How handsome he is. How many wives he has. How many sons he has. How many crown princes he has. Alright?

이제 당신이 맞다고 가정하면, 3가지 가능성을 포함하고 있지 않은 겁니다. 그건 위험합니다. 그러니 선이란 당신이 실제로 신이 누군지, 어떻게 생겼는지 키가 어떤지 얼마나 큰지 얼마나 잘생겼는지, 아내가 몇인지 아들이 몇인지 세자가 몇인지 보는 수행의 길입니다. 알겠습니까?

So that’s in Buddhism, we simply don’t say things. In Buddhism, we say things then we tell you why don’t you do this to verify that the Buddha did not pull your legs. All the people who followed the Chan, who practiced Chan to perfection, who accomplish Chan, ok. They all said what the Buddha taught is correct.

그래서 불교에선 우린 단지 말만 하지 않습니다. 우리가 말하고 나면, 우리는 당신이 이걸 해서 확인해보지 그래, 부처님께서 당신을 속인 게 아니셨단 걸 말이야, 라고 합니다. 선을 따른, 선을 완벽에 이르기까지 수행한 사람들, 선을 성취한 모든 사람들은 오케이, 그들 모두 부처님께서 가르치신 게 맞다고 말합니다.

They wouldn’t change a single word. And he’s one of them. We have a lot of people like that. More than you can ever imagine. So the Buddhist challenge is do it. Practice Chan. Ok. And you see that you begin to see, understand more, you see more. And you open your mind more Ok.

그들은 한 단어도 바꾸지 않았습니다. 선화상인께선 그런 분들 중 한 분 이십니다. 우리에게 그와 같은 분들이 아주 많이 있습니다. 당신이 상상할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 많이 말입니다. 그러니 불교에서의 도전은 그걸 하는 겁니다, 선을 하는 겁니다. 오케이. 그리고 당신이 그걸 보기 시작하면, 더 이해하기 시작합니다. 더 봅니다. 그리고 당신의 마음을 더 엽니다. 오케이.

You will be able to verify everything we told you. Everything. If we lie to you, then you will be able to see that if I lie to you, I will fall to the hells. I can’t escape it. Why would I lie to you? Why would the Buddha lie to you? Why would he lie to us? 

우리가 당신에게 말해준 모든 것들을 당신이 진실임을 확인해볼 수 있을 겁니다. 우리가 당신에게 거짓말을 한 거라면, 그럼 내가 당신에게 만약 거짓말을 했다면, 지옥으로 떨어지는 거 볼 수 있을 겁니다. 난 벗어날 수 없습니다. 내가 왜 거짓말을 하겠습니까? 부처님께서 왜 당신에게 거짓말을 하겠습니까? 왜 선화상인께서 당신에게 거짓말을 하겠습니까?

You see those people who lie to their disciples, to their students, they fall to the hells. The students who believe them, go down there with them. It’s verified. Ok? Anyway, it’s just Buddhist thing. It doesn’t matter. Alright. Where are we? Time is up. Of course, the time is always up. Where are we?

자기 제자에게, 학생에게 거짓말한 사람들이 지옥으로 떨어지는 걸 봅니다. 그들을 믿은 학생들은 함께 아래로 가게 됩니다. 그건 진실로 확인됐습니다. 오케이? 아무튼. 그건 그냥 불교 일입니다. 중요치 않습니다. 네. 우리 어디까지 했습니까. 시간이 다 됐군. 당연히 언제나 시간이 다 됐습니다. 우리 어디까지 했습니까?

We are talking about 조명위본사. I feel that just inclusion, I probably hope that next time tomorrow, I have more information about this thing. But my guess is that if I were to interpret this sentence here, I’m enforcing interpret this sentence here, I would say the fundamental work is to help others of a person, not to help himself. 

우리 조명위본사 얘길 하고 있었습니다. 난 그냥 내일 다음 번에, 여기 관해 더 많이 정보가 있길 바랍니다. 하지만 내 추측으론, 내가 여기 이 문장을 해석한다면, 굳이 이 문장을 해석해보자면, 본사란 한 사람으로써 본인이 아닌 남을 돕는 것이라 하겠습니다.

The human being, fundamental work is not to help himself or herself but to help others. And the best way to help others is to follow role models, choose the role model. and pattern your life after that. Ok? Fundamentally our lives is not, our lives is not about to enjoy ourselves, to indulge ourselves but to help others. Ok?

인간으로써 본사란 스스로가 아닌 남을 돕는 것이라고 말입니다. 그리고 남을 돕는 최고의 방법은 롤모델을 따르는 것, 롤모델을 고르고 그를 따라 자기 삶을 재단하는 것이라고 말입니다. 오케이? 근본적으로 우리의 삶은 우리 스스로 즐기기 위해서, 혼자 탐닉하기 위한 것이 아니라 남을 돕는 겁니다. 오케이?

So you mold that, let’s say Gandhi. When you feel he’s wiser than you, you mold yourself after him. And you find someone better than Gandhi, mold yourself after that person. You don’t say mold yourself after me. Mold yourself to better suit, your purpose. 

그러니 그걸 주조하는 겁니다. 간디라고 쳐봅시다. 여러분이 그가 여러분보다 현명하다고 느낍니다. 여러분이 간디를 따라 본인을 주조합니다. 그리고 간디보다 더 나은 누군가를 찾아서 그 사람을 따라 본인을 주조합니다. 날 따라 주조하라고 하지 마십시오. 여러분 목적에 더 나은, 적합한 걸 따라 본인을 주조하는 겁니다. 

The reason that you are able to see, when you see helping others and you see oh I see Gandhi as a one role model to help others. He helped his entire country. Ok? It’s incredible achievement. I’m not sure the way I go back and I can help people of my country. My own countrymen.

여러분이 볼 수 있는 이유는, 여러분이 남을 도울 때, 여러분이 오, 간디는 남을 돕는 롤모델이야, 자기 조국 전체를 도왔어요, 라고 합니다. 오케이? 그건 놀라운 성취입니다. 내가 돌아가서 내 조국 사람들을, 내 나라 사람들을 도울 수 있을지 확실치 않습니다. 

So maybe I pattern myself after that type of lifestyle. Then eventually see, ‘wait a minute. Helping my countrymen is still not enough. Maybe I want to help the Nazis, too’ Ok? Then you find another role model that will help you that is good at doing that. You keep molding your life, pattern yourself after people who are successful. That’s what he’s saying. That’s all. Alright?

아마 내 스스로를 그런 류의 라이프 스타일을 따라 재단합니다. 그러고 결국에 ‘잠깐만, 내 나라 사람들을 돕는 건 충분치 않아. 나치도 돕고 싶은데,’ 오케이? 그럼 거기 뛰어난, 여러분에게 도움이 되는 또다른 롤모델을 찾는 겁니다. 성공한 사람들을 따라 여러분 삶을 계속 주조하십시오, 계속 재단하십시오. 선화상인께선 그런 말씀을 하시는 겁니다. 그게 답니다. 알겠습니까?
