영화 선사의 약사경 강설 중 제오대원
Sutra: 경문
“The fifth great vow: 'I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, I shall enable limitless and boundless numbers of sentient beings who cultivate Brahma conduct within my Dharma to perfectly uphold the three clusters of precepts without deficiency. Should there be any violation, upon hearing my name, they will regain their purity and not fall into the evil destinies.'"
“제오대원 : 내가 다음 세상에 보리(菩提)를 증득할 때, 무량무변의 유정들이 내 법 가운데서 범행을 닦을 때, 일체가 모두 계에 흠이 없고, 삼취정계를 구족할 것입니다. 설사 파계하였을지라도, 나의 이름을 들으면 다시 청정해져서 악취에 떨어지지 않을 것이다”.
「第五大願：願我來世得菩提時，若有無量無邊有情，於我法中修行梵行，一切皆令得不缺戒，具三聚戒。設有毀犯，聞我名已，還得清淨，不墮惡趣。
Commentary: 해설
Because of Medicine Master Buddha's vows, even if you have committed the ten evils, or broken the precepts, if you hear this Buddha's name, you will attain bliss and be freed from offenses, suffering, and birth and death.
약사 부처님의 서원 덕분에, 여러분이 십악을 저지르거나 계율을 범하여도, 만약 이 부처님의 명호를 듣는다면, 안락을 얻고, 죄업, 고통, 생사에서 자유로워질 것입니다.

다섯째 큰 서원은 내가 다음 세상에 보리(菩提)를 증득할 때, 모든 중생이 나의 가르침 가운데서 범행을 수행하여
Medicine Master Buddha knows that most living beings do not uphold the precepts, their karma is a mixture of good and evil. It's like a muddy puddle in which dirt and water are mixed. Water represents wisdom, and dirt ignorance. If we can hold precepts, then we can return to the origin and discover our inherent wisdom. Not upholding the precepts is like muddying the clear water of wisdom with the dirt of ignorance. However, upholding the precepts is not an easy thing to do. Not upholding precepts is like trying to cross the ocean with a leaky vessel.
약사 부처님은 대부분 중생이 계율을 지키지 않고, 그들의 업은 선악이 섞여 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그건 흙과 물이 섞인 진흙탕과 같습니다. 물은 지혜, 흙은 무명을 나타냅니다. 우리가 계율을 지키면 근원으로 돌아가 타고난 지혜(근본지)를 발견할 수 있습니다. 계율을 지키지 않으면 그건 마치 지혜의 맑은 물을 무명의 진흙으로 흐려지게 하는 것과 같습니다. 하지만 계율을 지키는 것이 쉽지는 않습니다. 계율을 지키지 않는 것은 구멍 난 배로 바다를 건너려는 것과 같습니다.
Question: People take precepts with their own free will. The Buddha is supposed to be compassionate. Then why does he encourage us to receive precepts knowing full well that we’ll break them and will have to fall to the hells for our infractions?
질문: 사람들은 자신의 자유 의지로 계율을 받습니다. 부처님은 원래 자비로워야 합니다. 그런데 어째서 부처님은 계를 어기면 그 잘못으로 지옥에 떨어진다는 것을 알면서 우리에게 계율 받는 것을 권할까요?
Answer: You are quite right. Living beings do not need any more encouragements! They can do just fine by themselves. They love to break precepts and can do it rather effortlessly. Why do they break precepts? Either they do it in order to fulfill their desires or it could be from their lack of self-control.
답변: 당신이 꽤 옳습니다. 중생에게 추가로 권유할 필요는 없는 겁니다! 중생은 그냥 혼자서도 잘 지낼 수 있습니다. 중생은 계율을 어기길 좋아하고, 아주 쉽게 계율을 어길 수 있습니다. 왜 계율을 어기는 걸까요? 그건 욕망을 채우기 위해서 또는 자제력이 부족해서입니다.
The Buddha did not create precepts to make it harder for living beings. Do you really believe that He would do that to us? If not then why did he teach precepts? To bring great benefits to all living beings. Precepts are in essence the roadmap that reveals to the cultivators where the dangers lie. They therefore can help us avoid falling off the cliffs by telling us where the cliffs are. Unfortunately, even though we know of the dangers, we still like to flirt with danger even at the risk of our lives. We can hardly blame the Buddha for our stupidity!
부처님이 중생을 더 힘들게 하려고 계율을 만든 것이 아닙니다. 정말 부처님이 우리를 힘들게 하려고 계율을 만들었을까요? 그렇지 않다면 왜 계율을 가르쳤을까요? 모든 중생에게 큰 이득을 가져다 주기 위해서입니다. 계율은 본질적으로 수행자들에게 위험들이 위치한 곳을 보여주는 로드맵입니다. 계율은 낭떠러지가 어디에 있는지 알려줌으로써 우리가 낭떠러지에서 떨어지는 것을 피할 수 있게 해줍니다. 불행히도 우리는 위험을 알면서도 목숨을 걸고 경솔하게 위험한 짓을 하는 걸 좋아합니다. 우리의 어리석음을 가지고 부처님을 탓할 수는 없습니다.
Another advantage of the precepts is that if we receive them and manage to uphold them, then we can accrue a lot more blessings than we otherwise would have, had we not received the precepts. However, this works both ways. If we receive a precept and then break it, we create more offenses than if were to break the same precept prior to having taken it (because now we not only commit an offense, but we also break our promise not to commit that offense).
계율의 또 다른 이점은 우리가 계율을 받아서 어떻게든 지킬 수만 있다면, 계율을 받지 않았을 때보다 훨씬 더 많은 복을 축적할 수 있다는 점입니다. 하지만 이는 두 방식 모두 작용합니다. 우리가 계율을 받고서 어기면, 받지 않고 계율을 어기는 것보다 더 많은 죄를 짓게 됩니다(그때 우리는 죄를 지을 뿐만 아니라 그 잘못을 범하지 않겠다는 약속도 깨뜨리기 때문입니다).
Thus the precepts Dharma is designed to help serious cultivators. Those who do not wish to cultivate do not have to receive precepts.
그래서 율법은 진지한 수행자를 위해 고안되었습니다. 수행을 원하지 않는 사람은 계율을 받지 않아도 됩니다.
“Brahma conduct” refers to pure conduct, to the strict observance of the precepts.
“범행”은 청정한 행으로 계를 엄격하게 지키는 것을 의미합니다.
Pure upholding of precepts: “without deficiency” (不缺戒) can be compared to a perfectly round, full moon.
청정한 계율을 지킴: “흠이 없다”(不缺戒)는 것은 완전히 둥근 보름달에 비유될 수 있습니다.
The Three Clusters of Pure Precepts 三聚戒:
삼취계
1. The precepts for gathering in living beings 攝衆生戒: Widely practice all the good dharmas for gathering in all living beings. Cultivating this Dharma will result in accomplishing the transformation body.
중생을 모으는 계율(攝衆生戒): 모든 중생을 모으기 위한 선법을 모두 널리 수행합니다. 이 법을 수행하면 화신을 완성할 것입니다.
2. The precepts that are comprised of wholesome dharmas 攝善法戒: To cultivate all good dharmas, the 10 paramitas, and the 84,000 assisting-the-Way practices; thus accomplishing the reward body.
온전한 법으로 구성된 계율(攝善法戒): 모든 선법과 십바라밀, 팔만사천 조도助道 수행, 그렇게 보신을 성취합니다.
3. The precepts which are comprised of the rules of discipline and deportment 攝律儀戒. This accomplishes the Dharma Body.
규율과 의로 구성된 계율(攝律儀戒) 이는 법신을 성취합니다.
The first cluster benefits others while the second and third clusters are for self-benefit.
첫 번째는 타인을 이롭게 하지만 두 번째와 세 번째는 자신을 이롭게 합니다.
"Should there be any violation, upon hearing my name, they will regain their purity. If one violates the precepts, if one hears my Buddha-name, one will return to the origin and not fall into the evil destinies. One will avoid falling into the hells, the realm of hungry ghosts, or the animal realm."
설사 파계를 하였을지라도, 나의 이름을 들으면 다시 청정해질 것입니다. 계율를 어겼더라도 나의 불명호를 듣는다면 근본으로 돌아가고, 악취에 떨어지지 않을 것입니다. 지옥, 아귀계 또는 축생계에 떨어지는 것을 피할 것입니다.
