영화 선사의 약사경 강설 중 제육대원

Sutra: 경문     

"The sixth great vow: 'I vow that in a future life when I attain Bodhi, if there are sentient beings whose bodies are inferior and whose faculties are imperfect, who are ugly, recalcitrant and dull, blind, deaf, mute, deformed, paralyzed or lame, hunchbacked, or afflicted with skin disease, insanity, or various other sicknesses and suffering, upon hearing my name they shall all become endowed with upright features, keen intelligence, and perfect faculties, and they shall be free of sickness and suffering.’”

“제육대원 : 내가 다음 세상에 보리(菩提)를 증득할 때, 모든 유정들이 그 몸이 하열하거나(열등하고), 모든 근(根)이 불구이거나, 추하거나, 완고하고 어리석거나, 눈멀거나, 귀먹거나, 벙어리거나, 몸이 경련하거나, 앉은뱅이, 절뚝발이, 곱사등이, 문둥병자, 간질병자, 정신병자 등 가지가지 병고가 있을 때, 나의 이름을 들으면 일체가 모두 몸이 단정해지고 지혜가 있으며, 모든 근(온전한 감각기관)이 갖추어지고, 모든 질병과 고통이 없게 되기를 서원합니다.”

「第六大願：願我來世得菩提時，若諸有情，其身下劣，諸根不具，醜陋、頑愚、盲、聾、瘖、瘂、攣、躄、背僂、白癩、癲狂、種種病苦；聞我名已，一切皆得端正黠慧。諸根完具，無諸疾苦。     

Commentary: 해설     

The sixth great vow: "I vow that in a future life ... 

여섯째 큰 서원은 “내가 다음 세상에 

Medicine Master Buddha is most compassionate. He understands how much suffering handicaps and deformities can bring. Sicknesses can be cured or can come to an end with death. However, handicaps and deformities can make us live on to endure unspeakable suffering.

약사 부처님은 매우 자비롭습니다. 그는 장애와 기형이 얼마나 많은 고통을 가져올 수 있는지 이해합니다. 질병은 치유될 수도 있고, 죽음으로 끝날 수 있습니다. 하지만, 장애와 기형은 말로 표현할 수 없는 고통을 견디며 살게 합니다.

Because the Buddha was aware of this, he vowed, "when I attain Bodhi, when I attain the Unsurpassed, Proper and Equal, Right Enlightenment, if there are sentient beings whose bodies are inferior, perhaps their body is frail or undersized.

부처님은 이 사실을 알기 때문에, "내가 다음 세상에 보리(菩提)를 증득할 때, 무상정등각을 이뤘을 때, 중생의 몸이 하열하면, 어쩌면 몸이 아마도 약하거나 체구가 작을지 모릅니다. 

A Chinese couple used to bring their son to the Gold Wheel Temple on the weekend. The boy was born quadriplegic and his mind was unclear. He needed constant attention.  His body grew unevenly. At the age of fifteen, his limbs grew more than the tendons, causing him great pains.  The doctors had to operate and cut the tendons. He suffered a lot and also caused a lot of grief to his parents and sister.  He passed away a few years later.

한 중국인 부부가 주말에 아들을 금륜사에 데려오곤 했습니다. 그 아이는 사지가 마비된 상태로 태어났고, 정신도 불분명했습니다. 아이는 지속적인 관심이 필요했습니다. 그의 몸은 불균형하게 자랐습니다. 열다섯 살 때, 사지가 힘줄보다 더 많이 자라서 큰 고통을 겪어야 했습니다. 의사들이 수술로 힘줄을 잘라내야 했습니다. 그는 많은 고통을 겪었고, 부모님과 여동생에게도 많은 슬픔을 주었습니다. 아이는 몇 년 후 세상을 떠났습니다.

And whose faculties are imperfect.  

모든 근(根)이 불구이거나 諸根不具

Their sense organs are not complete. They may have only one eye. Some of their features may be mutilated or deformed. Perhaps some of their limbs and faculties don't function normally like the helpless boy mentioned above.

감각 기관이 불완전합니다. 눈이 하나밖에 없을 수 있습니다. 몸의 일부분이 훼손되었거나 변형되었습니다. 또는 팔다리나 감각기관의 일부가 위에서 언급했던 불쌍한 아이처럼 정상적으로 작동하지 않을 수 있습니다. 

who are ugly, recalcitrant and dull.

추하거나, 완고하고 어리석거나, 

They could be so ugly that they are quite hard to look at.  Or they could be rather dull and unable to listen.

생김새가 너무 추해서 눈 뜨고 보기 어려울 지경일 수도 있습니다. 아니면 너무 둔해서 말을 알아듣지 못할 수 있습니다. 

blind, deaf, mute 

눈멀거나, 귀먹거나, 벙어리거나, 

The blind may have eyes, but cannot see; probably because they encountered the Dharma but refused to acknowledge it.  The deaf may have ears, but cannot hear; perhaps for refusing to listen when people spoke Dharma to them.  The mute tries to talk, but if they can make a sound their voice is unintelligible. This could be due to refusing to speak Dharma to others when requested.

장님은 눈이 있어도 볼 수가 없습니다. 그건 아마도 법을 만났지만 그걸 인정하길 거부했기 때문일지도 모릅니다. 귀머거리는 귀가 있지만 들을 수가 없습니다. 사람들이 법을 말해줘도 들으려 하지 않기 때문입니다. 벙어리는 말을 하려고 하지만, 소리를 내어도 그 목소리를 알아들을 수 없습니다. 이것은 다른 사람이 청했을 때 법을 말하기를 거부했기 때문일 수 있습니다. 

Deformed, paralyzed or lame, hunchbacked, People whose joints or limbs are deformed may not be able to extend them. Paralyzed people cannot move.  Lame people have difficulties walking. Hunchbacks look as if they had the hump of a camel.

또는 앉은뱅이(기형), 절름발이, 곱사등이. 기형인 사람은 관절이나 팔다리가 펴지지 않을 수 있습니다. 마비가 있는 사람은 움직일 수 없습니다. 절름발이는 걷는 데 어려움을 겪습니다. 곱사등이는 마치 낙타의 혹을 가진 것처럼 보입니다.

Or afflicted with skin disease 

피부병으로 번뇌로운 자(문둥병자, 간질병자?)

Skin disease disfigures people in various ways, perhaps covering their faces with patches of different colors. Or they could have leprosy.

피부병은 다양한 방식으로 사람들의 외모를 흉하게 만드는데, 얼굴이 여러 색의 반점으로 덮혀있을 수 있습니다. 또는 나병에 갈렸을 수 있습니다. 

Insanity 

정신병자 

Those suffering from insanity have a mental disorder rendering them incapable of taking care of themselves or not knowing what they are doing.

정신질환으로 고통받는 사람들은 자신을 돌볼 수 없거나 자신의 행동을 자각하지 못하는 정신장애를 가지고 있습니다. 

or various other sicknesses and suffering whether bodily or mental; because they created killing offenses or worked against Mahayana in the past.

갖은 신체적, 정신적 병고에 시달리는 것은, 과거에 살생을 저질렀거나 대승에 반하는 일을 했기 때문입니다.

Upon hearing my name, "Medicine Master Vaidurya Light Tathagata," they shall all become endowed with upright features, keen intelligence, and perfect faculties and they shall be free of sickness and suffering. 

나의 이름 ‘약사유리광여래’를 들으면 모두 몸이 단정해지고 지혜가 있으며, 모든 근(온전한 감각기관)이 갖추어지고, 모든 질병과 고통이 없어질 것입니다. 

Upon encountering this Dharma, they can be free from their handicaps, illnesses and suffering.

이 법을 만나면 장애, 질병, 고통으로부터 벗어납니다. 

Anecdotes: during the Song Dynasty, there was a woman who upheld the Medicine Master mantra.  She also bowed to and recited this Buddha’s name.  She fell sick and requested help from a monk. He spoke the causes and conditions of this Buddha’s Buddhaland, vows and practices. She felt great joy. That night, she dreamt of Medicine Master Buddha holding a cup of medicine. She drank it, began to break a sweat and suddenly felt a light ease. She woke up cured.

일화: 송나라 때, 약사진언을 지닌 여인이 있었습니다. 그녀는 또한 약사 부처님에게 절을 하며, 그 명호를 읊었습니다. 병에 걸렸을 때, 그녀는 한 스님에게 도움을 청했습니다. 스님은 이 약사 부처님의 인연, 서원과 행에 관해서 말해줬습니다. 그녀는 크게 환희로웠고, 그날 밤 약사 부처님이 약을 담은 컵을 드고 있는 꿈을 꿨습니다. 그걸 마시자 땀이 나기 시작하더니 갑자기 편안해졌습니다. 그녀가 병이 나은 상태에서 깨어났습니다. 

Also, there was a woman whose eyes were blind. A monk taught her to recite the Medicine Master Buddha’s name.  She did so for three years. Her blindness was cured.

눈이 보이지 않는 한 여자가 있었습니다. 한 비구 스님이 그녀에게 약사 부처님의 명호를 염불하는 방법을 가르쳐주었습니다. 그녀는 3년 동안 그렇게 해서 실명을 치료했습니다. 

During the Qing Dynasty, National master Yu Lin 玉琳, in his prior life was a monk with incomplete organs. Back then he was rather ugly, hunchbacked and dull. He heard of the Medicine Master Buddha Dharma, brought forth faith and practiced it. In his next lifetime, he then became National Master Yu Lin. He was very handsome, had great wisdom, became very well-known and was the teacher of the emperor.

청나라 때, 옥림玉琳 국사는 전생에 불완전한 장기를 가진 비구였습니다. 전생에 곱사등이에 추하고 둔했습니다. 그는 약사불법에 대해 듣고, 믿음을 일으켜 수행했습니다. 그는 그 다음 생에 옥림 국사가 되었습니다. 그는 외모가 매우 출중했고, 유명해졌으며, 황제의 스승이었습니다.
