부처님께서 계율을 만든 이유

The Buddha did not create precepts to make it harder for living beings. Do you really believe that He would do that to us? If not then why did he teach precepts? To bring great benefits to all living beings. Precepts are in essence the roadmap that reveals to the cultivators where the dangers lie. They therefore can help us avoid falling off the cliffs by telling us where the cliffs are. Unfortunately, even though we know of the dangers, we still like to flirt with danger even at the risk of our lives. We can hardly blame the Buddha for our stupidity!

부처님은 중생을 더 힘들게 하기 위해 계를 제정한 것이 아닙니다. 정말 부처님이 우리를 힘들게 하기 위해 계를 제정했을까요? 그렇지 않다면 왜 그는 계를 가르쳤을까요? 모든 중생을 널리 이롭게 하기 위해서입니다. 계는 본질적으로 위험 지역을 수행자들에게 알려주는 지도입니다. 계는 절벽이 어디에 있는지 알려줌으로써 우리가 절벽에서 떨어지는 것을 피할 수 있게 합니다. 안타깝게도, 우리는 위험을 알고 있음에도 불구하고, 여전히 우리의 생명을 걸고 경솔하게 위험한 짓을 합니다. 우리의 어리석음에 대해 부처님을 탓할 순 없습니다. 

Another advantage of the precepts is that if we receive them and manage to uphold them, then we can accrue a lot more blessings than we otherwise would have, had we not received the precepts.  However, this works both ways.  If we receive a precept and then break it, we create more offenses than if were to break the same precept prior to having taken it (because now we not only commit an offense, but we also break our promise not to commit that offense). 

계의 또 다른 이점은 만약 우리가 그 가르침들을 받아 지키면, 그 계를 받지 않았을 때보다 훨씬 더 많은 복을 쌓을 수 있습니다. 그러나 이것은 반대로도 작용합니다. 우리가 어떤 계를 받고 어기면, 우리는 그 계를 받기 전보다 더 많은 잘못을 범합니다. (왜냐하면 이제 우리는 잘못을 범할 뿐만 아니라 잘못을 범하지 않겠다는 약속을 어겼기 때문입니다. )
