Good morning. Thank you for coming to our GuanYin living home Dharma assembly.
굿모닝. “관음출가법회”에 와주셔서 고맙습니다.
It's a special day for our Temple.
오늘은 우리 사찰의 특별한 날입니다.
Because we are celebrating a day where the Bodhisattva decided to live the home life and lead a different kind of Lifestyle which is in the west here is not that well known.
왜냐하면 관음보살님이 출가해서 여기 서양에서는 잘 알려지지 않은 다른 종류의 라이프스타일로 살기로 결심한 일을 봉축하는 날이기 때문입니다.
They are... you leave the home life in order to lead a Pure Life, a simple life.
그건... 출가는 청정한 삶, 단순한 인생으로 이끌기 위해서 출가하는 것입니다.
okay? which simplify a lot.
알았나요? 그게 많은 것들을 단순화합니다.
We even cut our head, our hair so that we don't go see a beauty salon anymore.
우리는 머리도, 머리카락도 잘라서, 미용실에 더 이상 가지 않아도 됩니다.
Economize a little bit.
절약이 좀 됩니다.
and we wear the different kind of clothing that, of what is called the (Chinese word 화이쓰) in Chinese.
그리고 옷도 다르게 입습니다. 그걸 중국어로 화이쓰라고 부릅니다.
so we're not.. you know. the according to Chinese tradition or the Indian tradition the Buddhist tradition we're not supposed to wear colorful clothes.
그래서 우리는 중국 전통이나 인도 전통에 따라서, 불교 전통에서 우리는 화려한 색의 옷을 입으면 안 됩니다.
Because the lay people they wear you know very colorful clothes and uh and very attractive clothing whereas left-home people we wear very baggy clothes.
왜냐하면 재가인들은 색이 화려한 옷, 매력적인 옷을 입지만, 출가자는 아주 헐렁한 옷을 입습니다.
And so that we cover how skinny we are.
그렇게 우리가 얼마나 깡 말랐는지 가려집니다.
okay? In fact it's funny. My teacher’s very very skinny. His disciples are very very skinny as well.
알았나요? 사실 재미있습니다. 나의 스승님은 아주 아주 말랐습니다. 그의 제자들도 많이 많이 말랐습니다.
okay? and unless you somehow touch their body, you cannot tell how skinny they are.
오케이? 그 스님들의 몸을 어쩌다가 만지지 않는 한 얼마나 말랐는지 알 수 없습니다.
yes? Because we all wear these baggy clothes. okay?
네? 우리가 모두 이런 헐렁한 옷을 입고 있으니까요.
and we have some rules and regulations. We don't hold money. we don't touch money.
그리고 우리에게 몇 가지 규칙과 규정들이 있습니다. 우리는 돈을 지니지 않습니다. 돈을 만지지 않습니다.
Because we have a precept against touching money.
왜냐면 돈을 만지는 것이 계율에 어긋나기 때문입니다.
so when you give money to us,
그래서 여러분이 우리에게 돈을 줄 때,
Typically you put in an envelope.
보통 봉투에 넣어서 합니다.
I don't know why I'm talking about giving money. (Everyone laughs)
내가 왜 돈 주는 문제에 대해서 이야기하고 있는지는 모르겠지만 (모두 웃는다)
But it comes to mind because a lot of people give money straight to a monk or a nun.
하지만 많은 사람들이 비구나 비구니 스님들에게 직접 돈을 주기 때문에 이게 생각났습니다.
And it's a hundred dollar bill so you can't turn it down.
그게 백달러(13만원정도)짜리 지폐라면 거절할 수가 없거든요.
In fact, the proper protocol is to put it in an envelope because left home people have precept they cannot physically touch the money.
사실 적합한 절차는 돈을 봉투에 넣는 겁니다. 왜냐면 출가자는 물리적으로 돈을 만질 수 없는 계율이 있기 때문입니다.
We are supposed to be professional beggars. Therefore, we don’t touch money. HenSure for example, Master HsuanHua’s disciple, I believe he keeps this precept his entire life so far.
우리는 원래 전문적인 걸식자이어야 합니다. 그래서 돈을 만지면 안 되는 거에요. 예를 들어 항실(스님), 선화 상인의 제자인데, 지금까지 평생 이 계율을 지켜온 것으로 압니다.
so it's better for you to, appropriate to put the money in an envelope and give it to the left home person and then the left home person.... actually don't even give it directly to the left-home person.
그래서 돈을 봉투에 넣어서 출가자에게 주는 것이 여러분에게 더 낫습니다. 그게 적합한거에요. 그런 다음 사실 그걸 출가자에게 직접 주지도 않습니다.
You put it on the table okay? Put it somewhere. okay? and then the left-home person picks it up so that you avoid even touching a left-home person's hands.
그리고 그걸 탁자 위에 올려놓는 겁니다. 알았나요? 어딘가에 놓습니다. 그리고 나서 출가자가 그걸 집는 겁니다. 그래야 여러분이 출가자의 손에 닿는걸 피할 수 있습니다.
so we have a lot of weird rules.
이렇게 우리한테 괴상한 규칙들이 많습니다.
And so if you do that, if you do that, your merit and virtue is far more than you were to give, you know uh, money that's not in an envelope.
그래서 여러분이 그렇게 하면, 그렇게 한다면, 여러분의 공덕이 봉투에 넣지 않고 돈을 줬을 때보다 훨씬 더 많아집니다.
the only exception is when you give them a check of a million dollars and give it any way you like. (everyone laughs)
한 가지 예외가 있는데, 그건 여러분이 1백만 달러(13억원정도) 수표를 줄 때입니다. 그때는 여러분이 주고 싶은 방식 어떻게든 괜찮습니다.
We all forgive you. all right?
우리 모두 여러분을 용서할 수 있어요. 알았죠?
What else is different about left-home people?
출가자한테 다른게 또 뭐가 있죠?
We have a lot of uh quirks.
우리한테 특이한 점이 많습니다.
What we learn is the Dharma from my late teacher.
우리가 배우는 것은 나의 고인이 되신 스승님으로부터 온 다르마(법)입니다.
I was uh fortunate to live among them for four years.
나는 운 좋게 4년 동안 그들 사이에서 살았습니다.
and I hated it all four years.
4년 내내 싫었습니다.
the Chinese system, I'm sorry, they bore me.
중국 시스템, 미안하지만 나한테 식상합니다.
but I learned a lot.
하지만 배운게 많습니다.
It's a proper way of forming and training left-home people
그게 출가자를 만들고 훈련하는 바른 방식입니다.
and I had a chance to observe them.
그리고 내가 그들을 관찰할 기회가 있었던 겁니다.
So I learned a lot from them and took a lot of from their training and changed some of the things I feel more appropriate for in here in the U.S, modern times.
그래서 나는 그들한테서 많은 걸 배웠고, 그 훈련에서 많은 것을 얻었습니다. 그리고 내가 여기 미국, 현대에 더 적절하다고 생각하는 몇 가지를 바꿨습니다.
for example what's good about them is that they take care of the left-home people.
예를 들어 그들의 좋은 점은 출가자를 돌봐준다는 것입니다.
and they don't have to worry about money, make ends meet
그리고 (출가자들이) 돈에 대해 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 먹고 사는 걱정이 없습니다.
And that relieves a lot of pressure on left-home people.
그리고 그것은 출가자들에게 많은 부담을 덜어줍니다.
okay? the typical left-home person you know, they're under a lot of money pressure.
오케이? 일반적으로 출가자는 돈에 대한 압박을 많이 받습니다.
They need to pay the renting.
임대료도 내야 합니다.
They have to pay for food.
식비도 내야 합니다.
Pay for the clothes,
옷도 사야합니다.
Transportation and on and on.
교통비와 그 밖에 여러 가지가 있습니다.
So what we did, just like my Master's temples is that we take care of all their needs.
그래서 우리가 어떻게 하냐면, 나의 스승님의 사찰들과 마찬가지로, 출가자들이 필요한 모든 걸 우리가 해결해줍니다.
Why is that?
왜 그럴까요?
Because as a left-home person if you are under money pressure,
왜냐하면 출가자로서 돈에 대한 압박을 느끼면,
You know what's going to happen?
여러분은 무슨 일이 생기는지 아시나요?
It's very unlikely they can become enlightened.
그들이 깨달을 가능성이 매우 낮습니다.
The money is always constantly in your mind, just like you lay-people. yes?
돈 문제가 항상 마음속에 있기 때문입니다. 여러분 재가인들과 똑같이 말입니다.
Right? Don't have enough okay? never seem to have enough money. right?
그렇죠? 충분하지 못합니다. 알았나요? 돈은 절대로 충분하지 않은 것 같습니다. 맞죠?
It doesn't matter how much you have.
여러분이 얼마만큼 가졌는지는 상관이 없습니다.
And so it makes it difficult for a left-home person to concentrate on their practice.
그래서 그런 게 출가자가 수행에 집중하는 것을 어렵게 만듭니다.
so that's why and it worked.
그게 이유입니다. 그리고 이 방식(출가자가 필요한 것들을 해결해주는 방식)이 잘 됩니다.
It turns out my teacher’s trained a lot of his left home people and they become enlightened
나의 스승님은 많은 출가자를 훈련했고, 그들이 깨달았습니다.
okay? and I can see why.
오케이? 그리고 나는 왜 그런지 알 수 있습니다.
And then later on, I went to other temples.
그리고 나중에서야 내가 다른 사찰들에 갔는데,
I saw that people’s level is not that high.
사람들의 단계가 그렇게 높지 않았다는 걸 봤습니다.
Because it's the same common denominator.
왜냐하면 그게 똑같은 공통분모였기 때문입니다.
They're all worried about money.
다들 돈에 대해서 걱정했습니다.
Unfortunately. It's sad for me to see. okay?
안타깝게도 말입니다. 나한테는 그런걸 보는게 슬픈 일입니다. 오케이?
So that's why we want to make sure we take care of people.
그래서 그것이 우리가 사람들(출가자들)을 확실히 돌보길 원하는 이유입니다.
Okay? what else is different? What's also special about this particular Dharma
오케이? 또 뭐가 다른가요? 이 특정한 다르마(출가법)에 대해서 특별한 점이 뭘까요?
is that we specialize in cultivation so that we can attain enlightenment.
그건 우리가 수행을 전문적으로 해서, 깨달음에 도달할 수 있다는 것입니다.
Okay? We only have one reason to shave our heads.
알았나요? 우리가 머리를 깎는 이유는 단 하나밖에 없습니다.
is in order to accomplish the way.
그건 도를 성취하기 위해서입니다.
No other role. okay? what for?
다른 이유는 없습니다. 알았나요? 뭐 때문에요?
So that we can really have the wisdom and the ability and the skills to help living beings, all living beings.
그래야 우리가 정말로 지혜를 갖출 수 있고, 중생, 모든 중생을 도울 수 있는 능력과 기술을 가질 수 있습니다.
Okay? That's our purpose in life.
알았나요? 그게 우리 인생의 목적입니다.
We don't ask anything about our left-home people.
우리는 우리 출가자들에게 아무것도 묻지 않습니다.
Except for the fact that they aim to become enlightened.
그들이 깨달음을 얻는 것을 목표로 한다는 사실만 빼고 말입니다.
Okay? In fact the other day I went to... a few days ago I went to see an editor of newspaper.
오케이? 사실 요전 날 나는... 며칠 전에 신문 편집자를 만나러 갔습니다.
Very smart lady.
아주 똑똑한 아가씨였어요.
It's a pleasure to meet competent people like that.
그런 유능한 사람들을 만나게 되어 기쁩니다.
and she asked a lot of good questions.
그 아가씨는 좋은 질문을 많이 했습니다.
and she asked me “so you're training your students to become an abbot and take over a temple so what are the requirements?”
그녀가 나에게 물었습니다. “그러면 스님이 제자들을 주지가 되도록, 그래서 사찰을 인수할 수 있게 훈련하고 있다면, 어떤 요건이 있나요?”
I said very one simple, one simple requirement.
나는 매우 단순하고, 간단한 요건을 말했습니다.
That is they cannot be corrupted by money.
그건 돈으로 타락할 수 없다는 겁니다.
That's what we are different. We're different from my Master's Temple.
그게 우리가 다른 점입니다. 우리는 나의 스승님의 사찰과 다릅니다.
The people in charge of our temples will not, cannot be corrupted by money.
우리 사찰을 책임지는 사람은 돈으로 부패하지 않을 것이고, 그럴 수도 없습니다.
It's not possible, okay?
불가능합니다. 알았나요?
If they are corrupted, they are influenced by money. they have no business running a temple.
만약에 돈으로 부패하고, 영향을 받는다면, 그러면 사찰을 운영할 이유가 없습니다.
That’s my personal perspective. If you're still greedy for money then you're helping yourself, more than helping your followers.
그게 나의 개인적인 관점입니다. 만일 여러분이 아직도 돈을 탐한다면, 그러면 여러분은 신도들을 돕기 보다는 자신을 돕고 있는 것입니다.
Okay? so any questions?
알았나요? 질문?
And that's what makes us different.
그것이 바로 우리가 다른 점입니다.
We practice the Dharma so that actually we practice a lot of Guanyin Bodhisattva’s Dharma.
우리가 다르마를 수행하는 것은... 사실 우리는 관음보살님의 다르마를 많이 수행합니다.
The advantage is that it enables us to develop skills to really help living beings when we're ready.
그 장점은 우리가 준비되었을 때, 중생들을 진정으로 도울 수 있는 기술을 개발할 수 있게 해준다는 것입니다.
When they're ready, they have the skills to help living beings. I repeat.
그들이 준비가 되면, 중생들을 도울 수 있는 기술을 갖춥니다. 반복해서 말합니다.
And that is why I put a lot of emphasis on people not being greedy
그래서 그것이 탐하지 말라는 점을 사람들에게 많이 강조하는 이유입니다.
Although I heard the lotto is 1.6 billion dollars.
하지만 내가 듣기로 로또가 16억 달러(약 2조원)라던데요.
and Nancie is starting... Is that... is it over? or is it closed? Is still going on right now 1.6 billion dollars. There's a pool of Money. Two Bucks a head. (audience: inaudible) If you're into that... anyway there're always exceptions. of course for me only.
낸시가 시작한답니다. 벌써 끝났나요? 닫았어요? 아니면 하고 있는 중이에요? 16억 달러랍니다. 공동자금으로 한답니다. 두당 2달러라고 하네요. (청중 안들림). 그런거 좋아하는 분은... 아무튼, 나한테만은 늘 예외가 있어요.
My students they should not touch the money.
내 학생들은 돈을 만지지 말아야 합니다.
Okay? alright. and the one of the major advantages of the Guanyin Dharma doors is?
오케이? 좋습니다. 그래서 관음법문의 주요 장점 중 하나는?
If you practice them, you naturally become more compassionate.
여러분이 (관음의 법문을) 수행하면, 자연스럽게 더 자비로워집니다.
That's what I noticed.
그게 바로 내가 알아차린 점입니다.
Why is it important?
그게 왜 중요할까요?
It's important because if you want reach a higher level enlightenment. That's where compassion matters.
그게 중요한 이유는 여러분이 더 높은 단계의 깨달음에 도달하려면, 그때 자비가 중요하기 때문입니다.
And that is why, that is why my teacher’s disciples struggle quite a bit.
그런 이유로... 그것이 나의 스승님의 제자들이 꽤나 고생하는 부분입니다.
They don't put enough emphasis on developing compassion, kindness and compassion.
그들은 동정, 자비를 키우는 데 충분히 강조점을 두지 않습니다.
and that's why... I noticed that's why I hope that one day my disciples will surpass all of them.
그리고 그런 이유로... 그래서 그게 언젠가 내 제자들이 그들(선화 상인의 제자들) 모두를 뛰어넘기를 바라는 이유입니다.
That's my small personal goal.
그게 나의 작은 개인적 목표입니다.
Okay? That's how I am personally
알았나요? 그게 내가 개인적으로...
when I do something. I.. It's important that I do a little bit more to contribute so that the Dharma is richer and it's broader and more profound.
내가 어떤 일을 할 때... 나는... 나에게는 법이 더 풍부하고 더 넓고 심오해질 수 있도록 내가 조금 더 기여하는 것이 중요합니다.
Alright? So pressure is on you left-home disciples.
알았나요? 그래서 압력은 여러분들 출가인 제자들에게 있습니다.
It doesn't matter you’re man or woman, a child or a 100 year old.
여러분이 남자든, 여자든, 어린아이이든, 100살이든 중요하지 않습니다.
I expect all of you to shoot for enlightenment.
나는 여러분 모두가 깨달음을 목표로 해보길 기대합니다.
okay? and if you don't make it this lifetime
알았나요? 만약 여러분이 이번 생에 성공하지 않는다면,
then I give you an outlet. You should go to the pureland so that you become enlightened next lifetime.
그땐 내가 여러분에게 탈출구를 주겠습니다. 여러분이 다음 생에서 깨달을 수 있도록 정토에 가야 합니다.
Alright? Any questions?
알았죠? 다른 질문?
Hmm. Hopefully they should go there. Those of you who go there early
음... 바라건데 거기 가야 합니다. 여러분 중 거기 일찍 가는 사람들은
they should invest in real estate,
부동산에 투자해야 합니다.
And I would like Lu Mountain and Wei Mountain Temple quarters where we can be together and practice.
그리고 우리가 함께 모여서 수행할 수 있는 노산사, 위산사 처소가 있으면 좋겠습니다.
Lots of palaces there.
거기 궁전도 많습니다.
(We) continue to practice together okay?
우리가 함께 계속 수행하는 겁니다. 알았죠?
Alright? and if you like, we can start investing in lay people's quarters as well.
좋나요? 그래서 여러분이... 우리는 재가인용 처소에도 투자를 시작할 수 있습니다.

오케이. 네. 여기 질문.
Vickie: Master. Are you including lay people on this? or can the lay people kind of like...
빅키: 마스터. 스님 여기에 재가인도 포함시키시는 건가요? 아니면 재가인이...
Master: Absolutely, I don't discriminate. If you are competent, if you are, if you have the desire, I will train you as well.
마스터: 그렇고말고요. 난 차별하지 않습니다. 여러분이 적임이라면, 원한다면, 난 당신도 훈련할 겁니다.
In fact that's what makes us different as well.
사실 그게 우릴 다르게 만드는 것이기도 합니다.
It seems my master’s, The nun’s level is not as high as the monks.
나의 스승님 비구니 스님 단계는 비구 스님만큼 높지 않은 듯합니다.
To me it doesn't make sense.
나한테는 그게 말이 안 됩니다.
I don't care it's man or woman, a child, even a child if they have she has potential, I will train her as well.
그게 남자든, 여자든, 아이건, 어린아이도 잠재력이 있다면 상관 없습니다. 나는 어린아이도 훈련할 겁니다.
I don't care. okay? It's no discrimination.
나는 상관 안 합니다. 오케이? 차별없이 말입니다.
But it turns out that left-home people do have an advantage because of the left-home program is designed to speed up your cultivation.
그런데 출가자의 경우 유리합니다. 왜냐하면 출가 프로그램은 여러분의 수행 속도를 높이기 위해서 디자인되었기 때문입니다.
so that you become enlightened a lot quicker than a lay persons.
그런 까닭으로 재가인보다 훨씬 더 빨리 깨달을 수 있습니다.
Much faster than lay people.
재가자들보다 훨씬 더 빠릅니다.
However, moreover there's some lay people who have tremendous potential. I've seen those.
하지만, 그런데 몇 재가자들은 엄청난 잠재력을 지니고 있습니다. 난 그런 사람들을 본적이 있습니다.
They are very very high level.
아주 아주 높은 단계입니다.
In fact, they put pressure on Master HsuanHua’s disciples.
사실 그 사람들이 선화 상인 제자들에게 압력이 됩니다.
I know at least two lay people.
나는 적어도 재가인 두 명을 알고 있습니다.
a man and a woman
남자 한명, 여자 한명
Their level is higher than Master HsuanHua’s senior monks.
그들의 단계는 선화 상인의 제자들 중 원로 스님들보다 높습니다.
That's how scary they are.
그렇게 무섭습니다.
Don't look around here. If they're that good, they won't go to Lu Mountain Temple. Trust me.
여기 주변을 둘러볼 필요가 없습니다. 그렇게 실력이 좋다면, 그 사람들은 노산사에는 오지 않을 겁니다. 날 믿으세요.
But they're pretty good. But they're not there... could be a lot higher. They reach a level they have some problems they don't realize they have.
어째든 그들은 꽤 뛰어납니다. 하지만 훨씬 더 높을 수도 있었습니다. 그들은 자신들이 가지고 있다는 것을 깨닫지 못한 몇 가지 문제가 있는 그런 수준에 도달합니다.
You see that's the difference. If they are here as left-home people, I can tell them every day. “you better do this otherwise you'll be stuck the rest of your life”
그게 차이점입니다. 만약 그들이 출가자였다면 내가 매일 이렇게 말해줄 수 있습니다. “이걸 하는 게 나을거야. 그렇지 않으면 남은 평생 정체하게 될테니까!”
Whereas lay people there's not much I can do.
하지만 재가인은 내가 할 수 있는 게 별로 없습니다.
okay? because your answer is much higher authority. Your spouses
알았나요? 왜냐면 여러분의 답이 훨씬 더 높은 권한이기 때문입니다. 여러분의 배우자,
I'm not.. I am at much lower level.
내가 아닙니다. 나는 훨씬 더 낮은데 있습니다.
I need to yield to their authorities
나는 그들의 권한에 양보해야 하는 겁니다.
Ok? your children.
알았나요? 여러분의 자녀들...
I bow to them.
내가 그들에게 절을 합니다.
because you are lay people. There is not much I can do with you.
왜냐면 당신은 재가인이니까요. 내가 여러분과 할 수 있는 것이 많지 않습니다.
but for these left-home people, we are very demanding. okay?
하지만 여기 출가자들은, 우리가 아주 요구사항이 많습니다. 알았나요?
People tell me “you don't seem to be doing anything”
사람들은 나에게 “당신 별로 하는 일도 없어 보이는데”라고 합니다.
yeah we don't do much like right now it's time, the chance for them to relax.
그래요. 우리가 지금 당장은 별로 하는게 없죠. 지금은 그들(출가한 제자들)이 쉴 기회입니다.
But actually it's hard work.
하지만 실은 이게 힘든 일입니다.
Why is that? I think it's tougher than my Master's temple program
왜일까요? 내 생각에 이게 나의 스승님 사찰의 프로그램보다 더 힘듭니다.
Because I learned the WeiYang training.
왜냐면 나는 위앙종 훈련에서 배웠습니다.
It’s much tougher than what they have over there.
그 사람들이 거기서 하는 것보다 훨씬 더 힘듭니다.
So much more difficult, okay? why?
훨씬 더 많이 어렵습니다. 알았나요? 왜일까요?
Because we don't have a lot of time.
왜냐면 우리가 시간이 많지 않기 때문입니다.
I left the home-life at a late, when I was older.
나는 늦게 출가했습니다. 내가 나이가 먹었을 때 말입니다.
so I don't have much time left to train people.
그래서 나에게 사람들을 훈련할 시간이 많이 남질 않았습니다.
I don't have a lot of time left so I'm trying to train as many as I can.
나에게 시간이 많이 남지 않았습니다. 그래서 내가 할 수 있는 한 많이 훈련하려고 합니다.
That is why the WeiYang training is one of the best ways, the speediest way to train people.
그래서 위앙의 훈련이 최상의 방법의 하나입니다. 사람들을 훈련할 수 있는 가장 빠른 방법이죠.
okay? for example what would take them over the years, would take us months.
알았나요? 예를 들어 그들에게 수년이 걸릴 일을, 우리는 몇 달이면 합니다.
That's how fast we are.
우리는 그만큼 빠릅니다.
And it applies to lay people as well.
그건 재가인한테도 그렇습니다.
if you're willing to undergo the training. Execute, follow the instructions you all have the chance.
만약 여러분이 훈련을 거치고자, 지침을 실행하고 따를 의지가 있다면, 여러분 모두 기회가 있습니다.
I don't discriminate between lay and left home people.
나는 재가자와 출가자 사이에 차별하지 않습니다.

알았나요?
so it's a lot of work to be done.
해내야 할 일이 많습니다.
you know. we have a chance here to increase the depth of Mahayana in this country.
이 나라(미국)에서 대승의 깊이를 키울 기회가 있습니다.
okay? the Asian Buddhism is losing its traditions, losing its depth
알았나요? 동양권의 불교는 전통을 잃어가고 있습니다. 그 깊이를 잃고 있습니다.
Buddhism in the west is actually becoming stronger.

Actually we're getting more demanding as our requirements.
