Good morning, everyone. It's been a very busy week. We had to prepare for a funeral service yesterday and Friday. And a lot of work more work and we're very grateful for the people who helped out. A lot of people pitched in. Any the people who participated in that those Services, I'd like to hear your input or your comments or questions. Anyone? No one? Okay. So any Impressions on what went, how well it went or how badly it went.
좋은 아침입니다, 여러분. 아주 바쁜 한 주였습니다. 우리는 어제와 금요일에 장례식을 준비해야 했습니다. 그리고 일이 아주 많았죠. 우리를 도와준 사람들에게 매우 감사합니다. 많은 사람들이 협력해주었습니다. 이번 일에 참여했던 사람들의 조언, 의견이나 질문을 듣고 싶은데요. 누구 없나요? 아무도 없어요? 알겠습니다. 일이 얼마나 잘 진행되었는지 혹은 얼마나 잘 안 됐는지 아무 느낌도 없나요.

I’ll give you some background. This is a man who is 88 years old. He is a doctor. He was a Vietnamese man who grew up in the north in Vietnam. And he grew up and fought for freedom against the French and then against the Japanese invasion. And then he immigrated to South Vietnam because he didn't want to get along with the Communist system. And then he enrolled in Armed Forces to fight the Communists and then one day he decided to become a doctor because he wanted to help people instead of killing people. So he was in a medical Corps for quite a while. So he practiced as a doctor for 40 years in Vietnam in South Vietnam.

Then 1975, he ran away at the country fell (4:35~) so he migrated to the US and nearly died on the boat until he was rescued by the American Navy. And then he came here and got his license as a doctor again and practiced for another 10 years before retiring. Last three years, he has been sick. So he passed away recently. He has some children who are successful or very successful here. None of them chose to be a doctor. But anyway, they came to me asking for advice because they said that the father won't make it. The doctors only gave him a few months left to live. This is few weeks ago.

So my advice for them was that to take care of that, you need to look at two aspects. One is for the living and one for the dead. So I said for the living, you should go to, traditionally, you go to a big temple and ask for the HerShang to take care of the ceremony ** (8:28) So I referred to the big Vietnamese temple here in this area, biggest, and there is a Vietnamese senior monk who can take care of them. And then I also recommended to him that, inform them that, even though they don't believe and they don't practice Buddhism.

And I advised them to take advantage of 49 day Dharma for the deceased. And I explained to them that that's critical because according to Buddhist beliefs, this is a time when we can really help and this is where the time they can make a difference on his next life. You see people in the world because they're successful people in the world the only think of this life and I try and explain to them that there's more than just this life, there's also the future life, there's something called causes and effects. So you want your next lives to be good then you have to plan the proper causes for your next lives to be good.
그리고 고인을 위해서는 49제법을 이용하라고 조언했습니다. 불교의 믿음에 따르면, 이 기간은 우리가 정말로 고인을 도울 수 있고 그의 다음 생에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 기간이기에, 아주 중요하다고 설명했습니다. 세상 사람들은 자신이 성공했기 때문에 오직 이번 생에 대해서만 생각합니다. 나는 그들에게 단지 이 생 뿐만 아니라 그 다음 생도 있고 인과라고 불리는 무언가도 있다고 설명했습니다. 그래서 당신은 당신의 다음 생이 괜찮기를 원하죠. 그렇다면 좋은 다음 생을 위해 올바른 인을 심어야 합니다.

And I advised them strongly advised them to invest in their father's future. I advised them to get a very good 49 day service. I explained to them the Buddhist beliefs and what happens during the 49-day period. I strongly urged them to go to a reputable temple like DRBA where I learned my Dharma from and get some help from them. And they listened and they chose to ask me to take care of both the living and the deceased. It's surprising because we are too small for the standards but not flashy enough, not well known enough, not having a proven track record enough and yet they chose us to do it. That's why we are, this time really a lot of people pitch in, and I felt we did an excellent job for both the living and the dead.
그리고 저는 그 자녀들에게 아버지의 다음 생에 투자할 것을 강력하게 조언했습니다. 아주 훌륭한 49제를 올리라고 충고했습니다. 저는 그들에게 불교의 믿음과 49일 기간 동안 어떤 일이 생기는지 설명했습니다. 제가 법을 배웠던 DRBA처럼 평판이 좋은 절에 가서 도움 받을 것을 강력히 권고했습니다. 그들은 그 말을 듣고 산 사람과 고인 양쪽 모두를 위한 의식을 저에게 요청하기로 결정했습니다. 놀라운 일이었습니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 그 기준에는 너무 보잘 것 없고 호화스럽지도 않고, 잘 알려지지도 않고, 증명된 실적도 없었는데 그들은 우리를 택했습니다. 그래서 이번에 정말 많은 사람들이 도와주었고, 산 자와 망자를 위한 두 개의 의식 다 우리가 훌륭하게 치러냈다고 느꼈습니다.

Since no one wants to make a comment about how we perform for the living, I will make, give you some information about the dead. You look at the picture of his, you can tell this person is very demanding and very dignified and very proud. I told the family that it's too bad that they didn't get the, we didn't have a chance a bit earlier, it's too bad they ask us to help out in the last minutes because it's like the lamp (17:00)about to go out. It's not a lot we can do now. It’s too difficult to try to help them under these circumstances. It still can be helped but it's extraordinary efforts and I don't think it's too much of them to really to be willing to undertake those types of efforts.
산 자를 위한 의식을 어떻게 했는지에 대해 아무도 의견을 얘기하지 않으니까, 제가 망자에 대한 정보를 좀 주겠습니다. 그의 사진을 보면, 이 사람이 아주 까다롭고, 아주 품위 있고 인자하단 걸 알 수 있죠. 저는 우리가 좀 더 일찍 기회가 없었던 게 너무 안타깝다고 그 가족에게 말했습니다. 그들은 우리에게 거의 마지막이 되어서야 도움을 요청했습니다. 거의 꺼지기 직전의 전등 같은 상황이었기 때문이죠. 그때는 우리가 할 수 있는 일이 많지 않습니다. 그런 상황에서는 돕기가 너무 어렵습니다. 여전히 도움은 되지만 그건 정말 믿어지지 않을 정도의 노력이고 제 생각엔 그런 종류의 노력에 기꺼이 착수할 이들이 많지 않을 것입니다.

So the bad signal is that when you see someone being sick and about to die there's a very strong signal that the creditors are coming. They're knocking the doors, they're tormenting the dying to make sure he falls. So it’s very difficult. The task is very difficult at hand to try to help the dying. Okay. So this man here is very proud dignified man. So when, before he died he was a proud dignified man, after he died he will also remain proud dignified. And it's remarkable because you have to remember this man here encountered many hardships and he rose to the occasion and he always picked himself up and continued to struggle continued to fight without giving up, without quitting.

So when you die, you go into the Dark World. All he sees is darkness and he's cold. So it's very frightening experience and yet he remained calm he remained dignified. That's why I admire this man. He is a proud and very dignified so that's why he's offerings his children are also very proud, very ambitious and they are very accomplished. But then during the first seven days, he got to see king Yama and he had to change attitude. Possibly, because he was informed that he has a chance to go to the Pure Land and that's why he became excited and he sort of looked forward to having the chance to go to the Pure Land.
당신이 죽으면, 어두운 세계로 갑니다. 그가 보는 건 어둠뿐이고 춥습니다. 그것은 아주 무서운 경험임에도 그는 평정을 유지했고 위엄을 잃지 않았습니다. 저는 그래서 이 분을 존경합니다. 그는 인자하고 아주 품위 있는 사람이기에 그의 자녀들도 그들이 잘 해냈다는 것을 자랑스러워하고 야심에 차있었습니다. 하지만 처음 7일 동안, 그는 염라대왕을 만났는데 태도를 바꾸어야 했습니다. 그는 아마 자신이 정토에 갈 수도 있다고 통지받았을 텐데요. 그래서 아주 흥분해 있었고 정토에 갈 기회를 얻길 기대하고 있었습니다.

So I want you to know that the 49 day Dharma as a buddhist practice, the competent temple practice really can make a difference to the deceased. So I'm reminding all of you again that you know, ordinary people are so preoccupied with the current lives and they invest everything this current life and they forget to invest into the future lives. Did I explain them in Vietnamese or English? I forget now. I switch back and forth and after while I forget. All I need to emphasize is that the 49 day Dharma is very effective. If you do it right, you really have a great impact on the rebirth chances.
그래서 저는 당신이 불교 수행으로써 49제법은, 유능한 절은 정말로 고인에게 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 알았으면 합니다. 제가 여러분 모두에게 다시 한번 상기시켜드리겠습니다. 평범한 사람들은 현생에 사로잡혀 있고, 모든 것을 현생에 투자하고 우리의 다음 생에 투자하는 것을 잊어버립니다. 제가 베트남어로 설명했습니까, 영어로 했습니까? 제가 잊어버렸어요. 왔다 갔다 하다보니까 시간이 지나니까 잊어버려요. 제가 강조해야 할 것은 49제법이 아주 효과적이라는 것뿐입니다. 당신이 그것을 올바르게 하면, 왕생의 기회에 위대한 영향을 줄 수 있습니다.

And now people are so busy with their lives worrying about the current lives. They are getting a job you know, feeding the family, taking care of the dog, feeding the cat. They don't have time to worry about the future lives. They don't even know about the future lives and possibility. Usually by tradition, they only come to the temple for help, according to the Buddhist tradition, Asian Buddhist tradition. And that's not good enough and that's why most people fail to make it, failed to have a good future lives.
그리고 요즘 사람들은 현생에 대해 걱정하느라 아주 바쁩니다. 그들은 취업하고, 가족들을 먹여 살리고, 개를 돌보고, 고양이도 키웁니다. 그들은 미래의 삶에 대해 걱정할 시간이 없습니다. 그들은 미래의 삶과 그 가능성에 대해 알지도 못합니다. 보통, 아시아의 불교 전통을 따라, 그들은 일을 도우려고 절에 옵니다. 그것으로는 충분하지 않습니다. 바로 그래서 대부분의 사람들이 좋은 내세를 얻는 것에 실패합니다.

They fail to understand the importance to invest in your future lives. Why keep on investing so much into our current life that people neglect about future lives. People fail consistently fail to invest in the future lives. So that's what we do. We try to remind all of you to plan for the future and this is what our cultivation one of the things we do with our cultivation. You need to remind people they need to invest in the future lives and prepare too. If you forget to invest in the future lives now when you're still alive, then you make sure that you invest in the 49 day, 49 day service, 49 day help so that you get a good future life at least after you die, you still have a chance.

She asked a question Vietnamese about the 49 days Dharma and I explained to her briefly that you can get more details in The Earth Store Sutra. People who are interested, they can read The Earth Store Sutra where the Buddha explains the process of what happens after death. When you go into the intermediate body’s Skanda (35:15) and you have 49 days to affect to have to try to have an impact on your next life. If you don't, you fall. Okay? So the judge King Yama examines your, looks your record and decides where you are gonna go next, which body your are gonna take on next.

And the current way is practiced in 49 day (35:45), at least the Asians are doing something about it. Sometimes they do it wrong because sometimes they drink and then have a merry time on behalf of the deceased. And all those karmas get added on to the deceased causing them to fall. But most of the Asians, they do they're okay. They go to the temple and ask the temple to recite sutras and on behalf of the deceased. That creates merit and virtue that helps the deceased. Unfortunately do it wrong in the sense that they wait too long and they ask the wrong people to do it for them but that's the way it is.
현재의 방법은 49제를 지내는 건데, 적어도 아시아인들은 뭔가를 하고 있습니다. 가끔은 잘못 하기도 합니다. 왜냐하면 그들이 가끔 고인을 대신해 술을 마시고 즐거운 시간을 보내기 때문인데요. 이런 업들이 죽은 사람에게 달라붙어서 그들이 떨어지도록 만듭니다. 하지만 대부분의 아시아인들은, 잘 하고 있습니다. 그들은 절에 가서 고인을 대신해 경전을 외어줄 것을 청합니다. 그것은 고인을 도울 공덕을 짓습니다. 안타깝지만 어떤 면에서 너무 오래 지체하거나 그것을 할 수 없는 사람들에게 부탁했을 때 잘못 되는 것입니다. 하지만 원래 그런 법이죠.

So that’s what temple stands for. This what we do. We cultivate in order to purify our karmas, purify ourselves. We are not doing this for recognition, for fame or for profit. We cultivate in order to help ourselves and help others when we have a chance. We help ourselves by trying to obtain liberation for ourselves and help others obtain liberation if we have a chance to help them. I've met quite a few people who came to me and said ‘Master, you have to help me’. I said ‘No, I don't’. I need to help myself first. I have to obtain a liberation first before I can even think of helping others to obtain liberation.
절이 의미하는 것이 바로 이런 일입니다. 이것이 우리가 하는 일입니다. 우리는 카르마와 자기 자신을 청정하게 하기 위해 수행합니다. 인정받기 위해, 명예나 이익을 위해 하는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 자기 자신을 돕기 위해, 기회가 있을 때 다른 사람을 돕기 위해 수행합니다. 우리는 스스로 해탈을 얻음으로써 자신을 돕습니다. 그리고 다른 사람을 도울 기회가 생긴다면 그들도 해탈을 얻도록 돕습니다. 저는 저한테 와서 ‘마스터, 저를 도와주셔야 합니다.’라고 말하는 사람을 꽤 많이 만났습니다. 저는 ‘아니오. 안 도울 겁니다.’ 라고 합니다. 저는 저 자신을 먼저 도와야 합니다. 다른 사람이 깨닫도록 도울 것을 생각하기 전에 스스로 먼저 깨달음을 얻어야만 합니다.

We don't spend time sitting here and say we must save others. It's not what we about. And if others want our help, then there are certain parameters there's things that we can do to help in a very modest ways. We can't help, we can't do everything. So we have parameters that we are confined to things that we can do. We cannot go beyond those parameters. So we don't feel we must save the world or save others as to justify our existence. Somehow people have the impression that this monk here wants to become famous and wants to save the world. No, I don't. Let me be flat out with you.

I just want to cultivate. I want to cultivate in peace. Any questions or comments? Yes. The question is some people, one person saw that the way we did the service, the ceremony is very adorned. And they wonder we're willing to do the same thing for them when they die. I said I don't do it for, you know, it depends on who you are. If you're sincere, we help you. I encounter too many people who are just asking for the sake of asking. And if you're not serious, you're not sincere, I really have no interest. I don't have time. So I said which person is this. He says GoYin. Anyone know GoYin? My immediate answer is that GoYin is not sincere, forget it. You're not sincere, just don't waste my time.

This leads to a few things. I plan to move to the temple, close to the temple. So I'm probably right at this stage, I'm looking for maybe to rent a house until I find something that I can buy. Okay? All right. So if you know of something or you know how to get a rental house, let me know. I'm interested in moving to this temple and training my people who have been cultivated here and those who do not cultivate, we don't have to help them. Okay? Yes. She's too expensive. You asked for too much. I'm too cheap. With the kind of things Hangyang is squeezing on me I'm very tight with my money. I'm very cautious nowadays. You should give some bad-mouthing me like that. To everyone else. I mean there's not much I can do.

I don't badmouth people. I mean the people of the world like that, they don't listen, they don't look at people, you know, criticizing and bad-mouthing other people. They don't say why are you bad-mouthing people. But they say ‘Oh, really? really? Is he that bad?’. This is people of the world. They only want to hear the bad stuff. They don't wonder why someone is criticizing someone else. See the Buddhists. The true Buddhists say ‘Why are you criticizing people? What's wrong with you?’ But people of the world is not like that. There's nothing I can do. Then it gives us a chance of practicing quiet. No one comes to the temple, we practice until money Runs Out. And then we go to the mountains. [Laughter]
