Good morning everyone.

굿모닝 에브리원!

Got some news for you.

좋은 소식이 있습니다.

We just got access to our church, our new temple.

우리 교회, 우리 새 사찰에 들어갈 수 있게 되었어요.

(Audience claps)

(청중 모두 박수)

Thank you. Last Thursday.

고맙습니다. 저번 주 목요일에요.

And so, it's funny

그런데 재미있는 일입니다.

because they gave us a bunch of keys like last month already.

왜냐하면 그 사람들이 벌써 지난달 열쇠를 한 다발 줬거든요.

Like five keys.

열쇠가 다섯 개즘 되요.

And we didn't know what they were.

근데 그 열쇠들이 뭔지 몰랐어요.

And so when, on Thursday, we were told that we now could access to “our” church after one month wait.

그리고 한 달이 기다리고 나서야 목요일에 우리가 이제 “우리” 교회에 들어가도 된다고 하더군요.

And I tried the keys and nothing works. (People laugh)

그리고 열쇠로 열어보니, 아무것도 안 열렸어요. (사람들이 웃는다)

And I said, oh my God, what happened?

그리고 내가 말하길, 오마이갓, 왠일이지?

Did we buy this church or not?

우리가 이 교회를 정말 매입한게 맞나?

Okay? So we went around and finally we found one door where one key works.

그래서 우리는 돌아다니다가 마침내 열쇠 하나가 작동하는 문을 하나 발견했습니다.

So we went in there and what a beautiful, beautiful church.

그래서 우리는 그곳에 들어갔습니다. 얼마나 아름답고 아름다운 교회인가요.

It's twice as big as this.

이것(노산사)보다 두 배나 큽니다.

Even the Buddha Hall is about more than twice as big.

심지어 법당도 거의 두 배 이상 큽니다.

Ven. XJ: I think your mic is not on.

현계 스님: 제 생각에 스님 마이크가 안 켜진거 같아요.

Yeah, and I think. you probably want to power up the other thing. Oh maybe it’s on mute? let me see. Yeah, sorry. Somehow it’s on mute.

네, 내 생각엔 거기 다른 거에 파워를 올려야 할거 같은데? 오! 내 마이크가 음소거로 되있나? 봅시다. 오! 미안. 왜그런지... 이게 음소거로 되있네.

And, and so the worship hall is huge. It's twice as big. The ceiling is twice as tall than our ceiling.

그리고 예배당도 엄청 큽니다. 두 배나 큽니다. 천장도 우리 천장보다 두 배 높아요.

And the prior church, the Presbyterian Church was there for 49 years.

그리고 이전 교회, 그 장로교회는 49년간 그곳에 있었습니다.

And they were losing a lot of followers.

그리고 많은 신도들을 잃고 있었습니다.

And therefore, for years, the church has been in a state of disrepair.

그래서 몇 년 동안 교회는 황폐한 상태로 있었습니다.

And therefore, you can imagine, there's, the roof is leaking. Water damage is everywhere. And last night, we found out that there's a leak. In the kitchen sink.

그래서 여러분도 상상할 수 있을겁니다. 지붕은 새고, 물로 인한 데미지가 여기저기 있었습니다. 그리고 어젯밤 우리는 부엌 싱크대에서 누수를 발견했습니다.

And so, but the kitchen is huge.

그래도 부엌은 아주 넓습니다.

Anyway, we're very pleased because I love old buildings.

어쨌든 나는 오래된 건물들을 좋아해서, 아주 기쁩니다.

I used to, uh, when I was at my Vietnamese Master's Temple about 18 years ago.

내가 우리 베트남 사부님의 절에서 있었을 때, 18년 전에

I used to walk around the Korea town. His temple is in Korea town.

그때 코리아타운을 걷곤 했습니다. 사부님 절이 코리아타운 안에 있었거든요.

As a form of exercise, I used to walk around.

나는 운동 삼아서 주변을 걸어다녔습니다.

And I used to walk by this humongous church.

그리고 나는 이 엄청나게 큰 교회 옆을 걷곤 했습니다.

Right in the Korea town and it's made of stone.

바로 그 코리아타운에 있었고, 돌로 만들어진 교회였습니다.

I used to tell myself, I say, one day I'd like to have a stone church like this. stone temple like this. I love old stone buildings.

나는 혼잣말로 언젠간 이런 돌로 된 교회를 하나 갖고 싶다고 말하곤 했습니다. 이런 돌로 된 사찰 말입니다. 나는 오래된 석조 건물을 좋아합니다.

And finally it came true. (Master laughs)

그리고 마침내 그게 이루어져습니다. (마스터가 웃는다)

To our total utter surprise.

완전히 놀랍게도

It is not something you can afford.

이게 우리가 감당할 수 있는 그런 가격이 아닌데,

As we are pursuing,

우리가 매입하려고 했을 때,

I told myself ... even if I were to sell Lu Mountain and all the assets we have, cars and clothes and everything.

나는 내 자신에게 말했습니다. 내가 노산사와 우리가 가진 모든 자산, 자동차, 옷, 모든 걸 다 팔아야 하더라도,

It’s still not enough to pay for that church.

그 교회를 살 돈이 충분하지 않구나.

But we went after it anyway.

어쨌든 그래도 우리는 뛰어들었습니다.

Somehow we got it.

어떻게든 우리가 교회를 얻었습니다.

So it's a lot of work to be done.

그래서 해야 할 일이 많았습니다.

Probably take about nine months plus to be operational.

아마도 이게 운영 가능해지려면 9개월 이상 걸릴 겁니다.

As of today, I don't even have the key. I'm not sure which key works for the gate. There's a chain link fence.

오늘이 되어서도, 나는 열쇠도 제대로 없습니다. 어떤 열쇠가 철장 울타리 게이트에 맞는지 모릅니다.

We are very easy going.

우리는 아주 쉽게 갑니다.

you know, the other church was there for 49 years.

여러분이 알다시피, 그 교회는 49년간 있었습니다.

So you know, they get, it's very emotional for them.

그러니 그들에게는 이게 아주 감정적인 일입니다.

They hate to leave. You can tell. But they must leave because they can't handle the maintenance, the upkeep anymore.

그들은 떠나고 싶지 않습니다. 느껴져요. 하지만 유지보수를 더는 감당할 수 없어서 어쩔 수 없이 떠나야만 합니다.

And so that's why we're very easygoing and take our time to that we want to make it a very graceful and painless exit for them.

그래서 그런 이유로 우리는 아주 쉽게 쉽게 갑니다. 그래서 그들에게 매우 우아하고 고통 없는 퇴장이 될 수 있도록 천천히 하는 겁니다.

Okay. And that's why we take ... we just give them all kind of concession.

오케이. 그런 이유로... 우리는 그들에게 온갖 양보를 하는 것입니다.

Alright? But ... So, after I look at all the work that has to be done.

알았나요? 하지만... 그래서 해내야 할 일들이 뭔지 둘러본 후,

I say, “Oh my God. What did I get myself into?”

내가 말했어요, “오마이갓, 내가 어디에 발을 들여놓은거야?”

because I bought it basically sight unseen. I didn't know what I was buying. Just knew full well that I would have to spend a lot of money repairing it.

왜냐하면 기본적으로 제대로 보지 않고 매입했기 때문입니다. 나는 내가 어떤 걸 매입하고 있는지 몰랐습니다. 그냥 내가 수리하는 데 돈을 많이 지출해야 한다는 건 잘 알고 있었습니다.

And so, so when I took a look at everything, I said, “Oh my God. hahaha why am I doing this?”

그래서 전부 둘러본 후, "오 마이 갓. 하하하, 내가 왜 이런 짓을 하고 있는 걸까?" 했어요.

So I asked myself, why are we doing this?

내 자신에게 물었어요, 우리가 왜 이걸 하고 있는걸까?

We're doing this because we're really outgrowing Lu Mountain.

이걸 하는 이유는 우리가 노산사에 들어가지 못할 정도로 커지고 있기 때문입니다.

It's, um, um, we are really busting through our seams in Lu Mountain.

그건... 음... 정말로 노산사가 터질 것처럼 늘어나고 있습니다.

And Lu Mountain, as I always said, Lu Mountain is to train people.

그리고 노산은, 내가 늘 말했듯이 노산은 사람들을 훈련하는 곳입니다.

We train the next, the third generation of Mahayana believers, leaders.

우리가 다음 즉 대승을 믿는 사람들, 리더의 다음 세대, 3번째 세대를 훈련하는 겁니다.

American Mahayana.

미국 대승이요.

What I've learned is the Chinese Mahayana.

내가 배웠던 것은 중국 대승입니다.

Really, seriously.

정말로, 진지하게,

my Master brought Chinese Mahayana to this country, Chinese Chan, for example, to this country.

나의 스승님은 중국 대승을 이 나라(미국)으로 가져왔습니다. 예를 들어 중국의 선을 이 나라로 가져왔습니다.

And what I'm teaching you in terms of Chan is actually has more American flavors than what I learned.

그리고 선에 있어서, 내가 여러분에게 가르치고 있는 것은 사실 내가 배운 것에 비해서 더 미국적인 맛을 가지고 있습니다.

So Lu Mountain, we've been here for about 8 years now.

그래서 노산, 우리는 여기서 이제 약 8년을 지냈습니다.

And slowly and gradually, people have been appreciating what Mahayana, for example, Chan can do for them.

그리고 천천히 사람들은 대승, 예를 들어 선이 그들을 위해서 해줄 수 있는 것들에 대해서 점점 더 감사함을 느끼고 있습니다.

And, so, with the new mountain, it’s gonna be called “Wei Mountain Temple”.

그래서 새로운 산은, “웨이산 템플(위산사, 潙山寺)”로 불릴 것입니다.

Wei Mountain, it’s because... it's a recognition, my gratitude to the founder of the Chan lineage that I learned from. My admiration for that particular patriarch.

위산, 그건 내가 배운 선종의 창시자에 대한 인식이며, 그에 대한 감사함 때문입니다.그 (창시한) 조사 스님에 대한 나의 존경심 때문에 그렇습니다.

I have great admiration for the WeiYang leanage.

나는 위앙종에 대한 큰 존경심을 갖고 있습니다.

It's, to me, from my limited understanding, the Chinese Chan have five schools, five lineages.

나에게는, 나의 얼마 안되는 이해지만, 중국의 선은 오가 즉 다섯 갈레가 있습니다.

And WeiYang. Our lineage is the first Chan lineage.

그리고 위앙, 우리의 맥은 첫 선종의 맥입니다.

Wei Mountain Chan Master was the first one, the first patriarch.

위산선사는 그 첫째, 초조입니다.

Okay. And then after that, four more Chan schools came about.

오케이. 그리고 그런 후 4개의 선가가 더 생겼습니다.

And they all are very successful.

그리고 그들은 모두 매우 성공적이었습니다.

And eventually, the Weiyang lineage, the first lineage disapeared.

그리고 결국엔 위앙종, 그 첫 번째 선맥은 사라졌습니다.

And it was folded into the LǐnZhī lineage.

그리고 임제종으로 끼어들어갔습니다.

Okay. Which happened to be the lineage of my Vietnamese master.

오케이. 그건 사실 나의 베트남인 스승의 맥입니다.

His name is MǎnZhuǐ.

그의 이름은 만기악(滿覺)입니다.

And now LǐnZhī is one of the stronger followings,

이제 임제는 더 많은 신도가 있습니다.

throughout the world.

전세계적으로요.

It turns out that the WeiYang lineage is very misunderstood.

위앙종은 매우 오해를 받고 있는 것으로 보입니다.

Why is that? It's so misunderstood to the point where it had.... it disappeared. It discontinued.

왜일까요? 매우 오해받고 있어서, 결국에 사라지기까지 했습니다. 중단되었습니다.

It's because back then, they couldn't find successors who are worthy to receive the mind transmission of the Weiyang lineage.

당시에 위앙종의 심전(心傳)을 받을 자격이 있는 후계자를 찾지 못했기 때문입니다.

This is a very, very typical of the Chinese Chan lineages.

이건 중국 선맥(禪脈)에서 아주 아주 일반적인 일입니다.

They chose, they chose the next Patriarch.

그들은 다음 조사를 택하는데,

By using mind-to-mind seal.

이심인심을 써서 택합니다.

Okay. So, it's, it's, what is this mind to mind seal?

오케이. 그래서 그게... 이 이심인심이란게 뭔가요?

I don't know. Because you have to ask the Patriarch.

나는 모르겠습니다. 여러분이 조사에 물어봐야 합니다.

But from my understanding is that these patriarchs are enlightened masters.

그러나 내가 이해하는 바로는 이런 조사 스님들은 깨달은 마스터들입니다.

And therefore, enlightened people recognize each other.

그러므로 깨달은 사람들은 서로 알아봅니다.

Okay? They may not be able, for example, some enlightened masters may not be able to see where you are.

알았나요? 그들이.. 예를 들어 어떤 깨달은 스님들은 여러분이 어디에 있는지 모를 수도 있지만,

Okay? They may not be able to recognize which level you are.

오케이? 그들이 여러분의 단계를 인지하지 못할 수도 있습니다.

But, the funny thing about enlightened people is that they can recognize each other.

하지만 깨달은 사람들에게 재미있는 점은 서로서로 알아볼 수 있다는 것입니다.

Maybe they emit light or something.

그 사람들이 빛을 발광하든가 뭐 그런가봐요.

Or, they walk funny. Or they breathe funny. I have no idea.

아니면 우끼게 걷는다든가, 숨 쉬는 게 다르다든가. 나는 전혀 모르겠어요.

But they can recognize each other. That's why they use this mind to mind seal. Mind to mind seal is a form of, of recognition, a certification.

아무튼 그들은 서로 알아볼 수 있습니다. 그래서 이들은 이심인심을 사용하는 겁니다. 이심인심은 인정, 인증의 한 형태입니다.

Yes, I'm enlightened. So are you. That's the process. Hm. That's so only in Chan lineages. Okay?

그러니까 ‘그래 나는 깨달았고, 너도 그렇다’. 그게 그 과정입니다. 흠. 그건 오직 선맥에서만 그렇습니다. 오케이?

This is the Orthodox Chan lineages. They always certify the next generation.

이게 정통 선맥입니다. 그들은 항상 다음 세대를 증명합니다.

So far so good?

지금까지 좋나요?

That's only in Chan lineages.

그건 오직 선맥에만 있습니다.

For example, Tibetan wouldn't be able to do that.

예를 들어 티베트인들은 그걸 할 수 없습니다.

They can't.

그들은 못합니다.

Okay? They don't have anything called “mind-to-mind seal”. Mind-to-mind seal is totally Mahayana. Totally Chan.

알았나요? 그들에겐 이심인심(以心印心)불리는 건 어떤 것도 없습니다. 이심인심은 완전히 대승입니다. 완전히 선입니다.

For example, a lot of these Tibetan monks are Lamas and so on. I know they cannot do the mind to mind seal.

예를 들어, 이런 많은 티베트 스님들은 라마승이고 그런데, 나는 그들이 “이심인심”을 할 수 없다는 걸 압니다.  

Okay? Any questions? So it's very, very, very special.

오케이? 다른 질문 있나요? 그래서 이게 아주 아주 아주 스페셜한겁니다.

So these lineages. So that's why, to the point where the WeiYang linage, they discontinued because they couldn't find the next level of teachers.

그래서 이런 선맥들이, 그런 이유로 위앙종이 중간에 중단될 지경으로 다음 단계의 스승을 찾지 못했습니다.

I believe the Weiynag lineage was discontinued,

(그래서) 내가 믿기로 위앙종이 멈췄습니다.

And I assure you, a lot of you, that you don't hear this kind of story anywhere. because various scam knowledge of Weiyang, including the Chinese. Ok?

그리고 내가 장담하는데, 여러분 중 많은 분들이 이런 이야기를 어디서도 들을 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 중국인도 포함해서 위앙종에 대한 사기성 지식이 많이 있기 때문입니다.

The Chinese don’t know much about the Weiyang anymore.

이제 중국인들도 더 이상 위앙종에 대해서 많이 모릅니다.

The Vietnamese don't know about this. English certainly don't know about this. And the Chinese forgot about this already.

베트남인들은 이것에 대해서 모릅니다. 영국인들은 당연히 이걸 모릅니다. 중국인들은 이미 이것에 대해서 잊었습니다.

Okay? So far so good? Yes sir.

알았죠? 지금까지 좋나요? 네 신사분.

Audience: the mind-seal, is it including some enlightened or just someone is also patriarch.

청중: 심인은 깨달은 사람들에 해당하는건가요? 조사들에만 해당하는 일인가요?

Someone who is enlightened. And he can, he can choose to be a Patriarch or not.

깨달은 사람입니다. 그 (깨달은) 사람은 조사가 될지 말지 선택할 수 있습니다.

Once you become enlightened, Patriarch or not. (master makes face)

일단 깨달음을 얻으면, 조사이든, 아니든 (풋! 마스터가 얼굴을 만든다)

Only you guys make a big deal out of it.

오직 여러분만 그걸 큰 일로 만듭니다.

The question is, once you receive the mind to mind seal, do you then become a Patriarch?

문제는 일단 이심인심을 받으면, 여러분이 그때 조사가 될 수 있는가?

And the answer is not necessarily. It's up to you.

그에 대한 대답은 꼭 그럴 필요는 없다는 것입니다. 그건 여러분에게 달려있습니다.

I repeat. The enlightened being, look at the Patriarch. It’s just a Patriarch. Whatever you want.

반복합니다. 깨달은 존재가 조사를 보면, 그냥 조사일 뿐입니다. 뭐든 상관없습니다.

Or a potato. who cares?

또는 뭐 감자라도 상관없습니다.

It doesn't matter.

그건 중요하지 않습니다.

And the Patriarchs don't even get offended if he's looked upon as just a potato.

조사 스님들은 자신을 그냥 감자라고 여긴다고 하더라도 기분이 상하지도 않습니다.

Okay? Only you will get offended by these titles.

알았나요? 여러분만 이런 명칭들 때문에 기분이 상할 겁니다.

Okay. So anyway.

어쨌든...

So WeiYang lineage

그래서 위앙종은

And, you know, and now you can go and tell the world, to other people. And say, oh wow, how come you know so much about Wei Yang? Because we couldn't find it anywhere else.

그래서 여러분은 이제 다른 이들에게 가서, 세상에 알릴 수 있습니다. 오! 와우, 어떻게 위앙종에 대해서 그렇게 많이 알고 있나요? 왜냐면 어디에도 그런 걸 찾을 수 없던데....

It's only my imagination. That's why you cannot find it in any books.

이건 그냥 내 상상일 뿐입니다. 그래서 여러분이 어떤 책에서도 찾을 수 없는 겁니다.

So take a grain of salt. Okay?

그러니 그냥 에누리해서 들으세요. 알았나요?

So what happens is that... I believe that the WeiYang lineage.

그래서 무슨 일이 있냐면, 나는 위앙종이 이렇다고 믿습니다.

Why does it get discontinued?

왜 위앙종이 중단되었을까요?

Because the next generation is not able to receive the secrets of the WeiYang lineage anymore.

왜냐하면 더 이상 다음 세대가 위앙종의 비밀을 받을 수 있는 능력이 없었기 때문입니다.

And this is so, so remarkable about the Chan school.

그리고 이것이 바로 선종에 대해서 매우 주목할 만한 점입니다.

They're not going to fool around with you. They don't, if they say, I don't find anyone worthy to understand the WeiYang lineage.

여러분을 속이지 않을 것입니다. 그들은 안 그럽니다. 위앙종을 이해할 자격이 되는 사람을 아무도 찾지 못했으니,

They would say, they say, okay, I'm going to fold. I'm not going to certify this idiot here.

그러면 이렇게 말할 겁니다. 내가 여기 이 멍청이를 증명하지는 않을 것이다.

Just for the sake of, you know, propagating something called WeiYang lineage. We don't do that. They don't do that.

그냥 위앙종이라고 불리는 무언가를 전파하기 위해서, 단지 그런 목적 때문에, 우리가 그렇게 하지는 않는다. 그들은 그렇게 안 합니다.

The WeiYang lineage. In other words, the WeiYang lineage is not in the temples. It's not in the books. On the books.

위앙종은, 달리 말해서, 위앙종은 사찰에 있지 않습니다. 책 안에 있지 않습니다.

It's in the next generation.

다음 세대에 있습니다.

In the people, meaning the following generation.

사람들에게 있습니다. 그건 다음 세대를 뜻합니다.

Does it make sense to you?

여러분한테 이해가 말이 되나요?

That's authentic Chan right there.

그것이 바로 진정한 선입니다.

Okay? So it turned... it got to a point. At some point in time in the past,

알았나요? 그래서... 과거에 어떤 시점에 이르러서,

The WeiYang patriarch recognizes, oh my God, my pupil, he's not up to, up to snuff.

위앙종 조사가 알아차리기를, 오마이갓, 내 제자가 수준이 안되는구나. 기대에 못 미치는구나.

Is it the expression? up to snuff? What does that mean by the way?

이게 그 표현이 뭐죠? up to snuff(기대에 부응하여). 아무튼 그게 무슨 뜻이죠?

What does it mean?

무슨 뜻인가요?

So, you know, worthy inhale something like that?

그런 걸 흡입할만한 가치가 있는지 그런 뜻입니다.

* 영어 snuff는 코로 들이마신다는 뜻입니다. 아무리 급하다고 마약을 코로 들이마실 만한 가치가 있냐는 그런 표현.

And therefore he said, I can’t certify you to be able to carry the knowledge of the Weiyang lineage.

그래서 그가 말하길, 나는 너에게 위앙종의 지식을 전할 수 있다는 증명을 할 수  없다.

So they said, forget it. You go to linji. because linji, you are at the level of linji.

그러니 잊어버리고, 그냥 임제로 가거라. 왜냐하면 임제.. 너는 임제의 수준이다.

You can be linji patriarch but you can’t be Weiyang patriarch.

너는 임제 조사는 될 수 있다. 하지만 위앙 조사는 될 수 없다.

I know the linji people is going to be offended at me.

이제 임제종 사람들이 나 때문에 기분이 상하게 되겠네요.

So it turns out that, so that's why my belief is that the people were not able to understand the Weiyang essence, the Wayang quintessential teaching.

그래서 알고 보니, 그러니 나는 사람들이 위앙종의 본질, 위앙종의 본질적인 가르침을 이해할 수 없었다고 믿습니다.

Okay? They are very truthful about this.

오케이? 그들은 이에 대해서 매우 정직합니다.

Okay. Later on, until recently, then Master XuYun somehow was certified to be a Weiyang patriarch.

그리고 나중에, 최근에 와서야, 어떻게 했는지 허운 화상이 위앙종의 조사로 증명되었습니다.

And then XuYun. Okay? Venerable XuYun who was very interestingly, XuYun was a Chan patriarch of all five schools.

그리고 허운은, 오케이? 허운 선사는 아주 흥미롭게도, 허운은 선종 다섯 갈레 모두의 조사였습니다.

He's qualified to be a patriarch of all five schools, Chinese schools.

그는 다섯 모두, 중국 선종 오가 모두의 조사가 될 자격을 갖췄습니다.

That's how good he was.

그만큼 그는 뛰어난겁니다.

Okay? And so when he met my late Chinese master.

알았나요? 그래서 그는 나의 고인이 된 중국 스승님을 만났습니다.

He looked at him and said, Okay, I would certify you to be a Weiyang patriarch.

그가 선화 상인을 보고 말하길, 오케이. 나는 당신을 위앙 조사가 되도록 증명하겠다.

Okay? Isn't that interesting?

알았나요? 흥미롭지 않나요?

And so Master XuanHua brought the Wayang lineage training to the U.S.

그리고 선화 상인은 위앙종의 훈련법을 미국으로 가져왔습니다.

And then he transmitted it to the second patriarch already.

그리고 그는 이미 이조에게 그걸 넘겼습니다.

Okay. Just for your information. So, there's a second patriarch who's alive and who's hiding somewhere. I don't know what he's doing.

오케이? 여러분을 위해서 말해줍니다. 그래서 이조는 살아있고, 어딘가 숨어있습니다. 나는 지금 그가 뭘하고 있는지는 모릅니다.

So I just know about him. Okay. If you want more details. (Master makes money-counting hand jesture) (everyone laughs)

하지만 나는 그냥 그에 대해서 알고 있습니다. 만약 여러분이 더 자세히 알길 원한다면, (마스터가 손으로 돈 세는 제스쳐를 한다) (모두 웃는다)

We can negotiate later.

Meaning that for Mahayana to, for Chan to thrive.

Then we must be able to help the individuals pursue their happiness a lot more effectively.

그러면 우리는 개인들이 자신의 행복을 훨씬 더 효과적으로 추구하도록 도울 수 있어야 합니다.

More effectively and able to attain their happiness. Agree or disagree?

It's kind of too late to pursue happiness when you're eighty years old. (Everyone laughs)

Don't you think? You're too old, too weak to enjoy happiness.

안 그런가요? 너무 늙었어요. 행복을 즐기기에 너무 쇠약합니다.

So what is happiness?

그래서 행복이 무엇인가요?

Yes. What makes you happy? What would you consider happiness?

We need to understand what happiness is. What's important to you. So that we need to use Chan to help you attain those things. In other words. Okay?

우리는 행복이 무엇인지 이해할 필요가 있습니다. 여러분에게 중요한 게 무엇인지 말입니다. 달리 말해서 그렇게 우리는 선을 이용해서 여러분이 그런 것들을 성취하도록 도와야 하는 겁니다.

Then Chan will thrive in the third generation. That's my attitude.

그래야 선이 세 번째 세대에서 번창할 것입니다. 그게 내 태도입니다.

I've been teaching Chan for about nine years. eight, nine years now. How many years? I don't remember anymore.

나는 약 9년동안 선을 가르쳐왔습니다. 이제 8년, 9년... 몇 년이죠? 내가 더 이상 기억을 못하네요.

Yeah, ten years. Close to ten years. Nine, ten years.

I've been teaching Chan for about nine to ten years already. My gosh.

That's the longest thing I ever did in my entire life in one stretch.

And I saw how Chan can help people, different age groups, different ethnic backgrounds, different interests.

Because I guess we all have the same common goal. We all want to be happy.

The Chinese, they're shy about, they don't talk about happiness. But we Americans are a lot more, a lot more vocal. We talk about what's important to us. And the Chinese talk about what could be important to them, you know? Alright?

so I feel that Chan is a very excellent tool to help us attain happiness, achieve what makes us happy. Okay?

Okay? The real basis, the real fabric of happiness, a young lady, is to being a good person.

It's very important to understand that.

이걸 이해하는 게 아주 중요합니다.

If you're not a good person, you will not be able to be really happy. That's the Buddha's teaching. That's the Buddha's wisdom.

여러분이 선한 사람이 아니라면, 정말로 행복해질 수 없을 것입니다. 그게 부처님의 가르침입니다. 그게 부처님의 지혜입니다.

So, for example,

그래서 예를 들어,

evil people, selfish people, greedy people, they cannot be happy.

악한 사람들, 이기적인 사람들, 탐욕스런 사람들, 그들은 행복할 수 없습니다.

Why? Because when you do Chan, you see the connection between goodness and happiness, and evil with unhappiness.

왜요? 왜냐하면 선을 하면, 여러분은 선과 행복 그리고 악과 불행의 관계를 봅니다.

When you do Chan, you see that.

여러분이 선을 하면 그걸 봅니다.

The higher level of meditation, higher level of your meditation level, the clearer you see the connection between the happiness and the goodness. Okay?

명상에서 더 높은 단계일수록, 여러분 명상의 단계가 점점 더 높아질수록, 행복과 선 사이의 연결 관계도 점점 더 명확히 보게 됩니다. 알았나요?
