It is a pleasure to be able to share the Shirara Collections to everyone.
여러분 모두와 “사리 전시회”를 나눌 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다.
And every time we do that, this is about, we've been doing it for the last year and a half.
그리고 언제나 우리가 이 행사를 할 때면, 이 행사는 지난 1년 반 동안 해왔는데,
And every time that we do it, I'm so touched by the eagerness of our people's temple in helping make it to happen.
우리가 이걸 할 때마다 우리 사찰 식구의 이 일을 이루고자 하는 열정에 너무나 감동받습니다.
And I don't feel anything, but it seems like I notice as many of you are so excited to be able to work for Shakyamuni Buddha.
그리고 나는 아무것도 못 느끼지만, 여러분 중 많은 분들이 석가모니 부처님을 위해서 일할 수 있다는 것에 너무 신나있다는 걸 알아차리게 된 것 같습니다.
Typically, they come to the temple, ‘there you go, cultivation again.’
일반적으로 사람들은 절에 올 때, ‘또 수행이네’합니다.
Now, you come to the temple, you look happy, and you look so excited to be able to see Shariras.
근데 이제 여러분이 절에 올 때, 행복해 보이고, 사리를 친견할 수 있다는 것에 너무 신나보입니다.
It is really wonderful to be able to practice in the proximity of this many shariras of Shakyamuni Buddha and his disciples.
이렇게 석가모니 부처님과 그 제자들의 많은 사리 가까이에서 수행할 수 있다는 것은 정말로 굉장한 일입니다.
I'm sure you notice there's a very powerful force field.
아마 여러분도 매우 강력한 힘이 있다는 것을 느꼈을 겁니다.
For example, if someone can help me out with the Thai sharira here. Can you open it? and get it for me?
예를 들면, 누가 여기 태국 사리를 나한테 꺼내줄래요? 이거 열어서 나한테 가져다 줄까요?
It is said that in Thailand, these types of shrines are only reserved for the bigger, important temples. And yet we have one. And we didn't know much about it except it's very big. And it's bigger. This is from Shakyamuni Buddha.
태국에서 이런 종류의 사리는 오직 더 크고 중요한 사찰에서만 보존합니다. 그런데도 우리에게도 하나가 있습니다. 우리는 이게 매우 크다는 것 외에는 아는 게 없었습니다. 그리고 이게 더 큽니다. 이건 석가모니 부처님에게서 왔습니다.
And it's only recently we noticed it. that you put your hands, a little close to it. You see that there's a force that pushes up.
그리고 우리는 이제야 그걸 알아차렸습니다. 여러분의 손을 좀만 더 가까이 대보세요. 위로 밀어 올리는 힘이 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
Okay. So the shariras themselves have a very strong force field.
이렇게 사리는 매우 강한 힘의 장을 가지고 있습니다.
If you don't feel anything, it's because you're still sleepy.
아무것도 안 느껴졌다면, 아마 아직도 졸려서 그럴거에요.
Maybe it's too early on a Sunday morning for you.
아마 이게 일요일 아침에 너무 이른 시간인거 같네요!
Okay. But these shariras are something else. They're so....There's some spiritual presence.
하지만 이 사리들은 뭔가 다르네요. 뭔가 어떤 영적 존재감이 있습니다.
And also, I'd like to also share with you the fact
내가 그리고 여러분과 공유하고 싶은 점은
We are so blessed to have these shariras at our temple.
우리 사찰에 이런 사리들이 있다니 우리가 아주 복이 많다는 겁니다.
It is... It requires a lot of blessing.
그건... 복이 많아야 합니다.
Funny thing is that we have the Shariras of the Buddha's family.
재미있는 것은 우리에게 부처님 가족의 사리도 있다는 점입니다.
His father, his mother, his two mothers,
부처님의 부친, 모친... 그의 두 모친 모두.
and his son.
그리고 아들.
And then, we had it since the day one.
그런데 첫날부터 우리에게 이 사리가 있었습니다.
He came with the first wave of donation.
그는 첫 기부의 물결에 함께 왔습니다.
And then I look at that and said, wow, this is so rare because you don't hear of it anywhere.
내가 그걸 보고는 이렇게 말했습니다. 우와. 이게 매우 드문 일인데? 이런 이야기를 어디서도 들어볼 수 없는데.
Okay. And you have one set. And I said, wow, it's just a shame that we don't have a Sharira of his wife.
이렇게 한 세트로 있는데, 우와.. 석가모니 부처님 아내의 사리만 없네. 그냥 안타깝다.
Okay? It would complete the whole family. And then I said, wow. So I asked around. I said, does anyone have, can anyone help me get a Sharira of his wife?
오케이? 그러면 가족 전체를 완성할 수 있을텐데... 그래서 내가 주변에 물어봤습니다. 혹시 누가 부처님 아내의 사리를 구해줄 수 있는지 물었습니다.
And you know, it's very, very, uh, tricky. Because you cannot tell the fake ones from the real ones.
아시다시피 이게 아주 아주 까다로운 일이죠. 왜냐하면 가짜인지 진짜인지 알아볼 수 없잖아요.
(A baby’s talking) Go away from me monkey.
(어린애가 스님자리로 오면서 소리를 낸다) 저리로 가. 원숭이야.
Monkey, go away from me. (Baby sound)
원숭이야. 나한테서 멀리 저리로 가. (아이 소리)
Monkey, monkey, go!
원숭이, 원숭이! 가라!
You know, When I ask for answers, I know the truth is false. How can I know?
내가 답을 구할 때, 나는 그 진실이 거짓이란 것을 아는 겁니다. 내가 어떻게 알까요?
And people make all kinds of claims.
사람들은 온갖 주장을 다 합니다.
And last year, I met someone who claims he has a Sharira from the burning lamp Buddha. Or antiquity.
지난해 나는 연등불(燃燈佛) 사리를 오랫도안 갖고 있었다고 주장하는 사람을 만났습니다.
It's a long, long time ago. He has one Sharira. And said, can I come and see it?
이건 아주 아주 오래된 일입니다. 그는 사리 한 과 있었습니다. 그리고 내가 가서 볼 수 있는지 물었습니다.
He says, well, you can't. Because I still kept it in Myanmar.
그는, 음, 볼 수 없어요. 내가 미얀마에 보관했거든요.
And, uh, so I get the, I came and approached him. And after awhile, I decided this guy is too flaky. He cannot possibly have the burning lamp Buddha.
그러니까 가서, 내가 와서 그를 만났습니다. 시간이 좀 지난 후 나는 이 사람이 너무 야비하다고 생각했습니다. 그에게 연등불 사리가 있을 수가 없습니다.
Such people are who brag and who are so full of themselves, who are untruthful, they cannot hold onto Buddha’s shariras. I can tell you that.
자기 자랑하면서 자기밖에 모르는 그런 사람들은, 진실하지 않은 사람들은, 부처님의 사리를 계속 붙들고 있을 수 없습니다. 내가 여러분에게 그건 말해줄 수 있습니다.
So that’s why to gather Buddha’s shariras is very very difficult.
그런 이유로 부처님의 사리를 모으는 일이 매우 매우 어려운 것입니다.
So, it turns out that six months later, someone called us and said, I'd like to donate some Bodhisattva Shariras to you.
그리고 6개월 후, 어떤 분이 우리에게 전화해서 말했습니다. 보살의 사리를 드리고 싶어요.
I said, oh really? wow. I don't think that person even knows what he is talking about.
내가, 아니 정말요? 우와. 이 전화한 분은 자기가 무슨 말 하는지 잘 모르는 것 같네!라고 생각했습니다.
And, and this person I've known this person for three years now.
그리고 이 사람은, 내가 이 사람을 지금까지 3년동안 알고 지냈습니다.
And I really like him.
그리고 나는 이 분이 정말로 좋습니다.
And he's very, very honest. And very, very devout Buddhist.
아주 아주 정직한 사람이에요. 매우, 매우 독실한 불교에요.
So he gave it to me with the request that we don't reveal his identity.
그는 자신의 신원을 밝히지 말라는 요청과 함께 사리를 나에게 내주었습니다.
And it turns out that's the latest addition to our collection. The 54 Arhats.
그리고 이것이 바로 우리의 가장 최신 소장품, “오십사나한”에 추가되었습니다.
It turns out that I noticed that he had this, right there.
그리고 나는 그가 바로 거기 이 사리를 갖고 있었다는 걸 알게 되었습니다.
I noticed that he had it for three years already.
나는 그가 이미 3년 전부터 갖고 있었다는 걸 알게 되었어요.
Okay. I was surprised.
그래서 놀랬습니다.
I was surprised that if you put something like that, with the shariras inside, wasn't he afraid that people would steal it from him?
내가 놀란 것은 그런데 사리를 넣어서 그런 식으로 두면, 여러분이라면 누가 훔쳐 갈까 봐 무섭지 않을까요?
It turns out the stupas he had like that, exactly like that, was all empty.
알고 보니 그가 그렇게 지니고 있던 사리함은, 딱 그렇게, 완전히 텅 비어 있었습니다.
And later on, when he brought it to me, brought it to the temple.
후에 그가 나에게 가져왔을 때, 절에 그걸 가져왔을 때,
He told me the story.
그가 나에게 이 스토리를 말해줬습니다.
He's been holding on to the shariras for a few years now.
그는 지금까지 지난 수년간 사리를 지녀왔습니다.
It's because a monk came from Vietnam.
베트남에서 온 한 스님 때문이었습니다.
He says, he was afraid that they would fall into the government, Vietnamese government, on the wrong hands.
그가 말하길, 정부에, 베트남 정부에 잘못된 손에 넘어갈까 봐 두려웠다고 합니다.
So, he brought it to the U.S. for safekeeping.
그래서 안전하게 보관하려고 미국으로 가져왔다고 합니다.
And then he went throughout the temples in the U.S.
그후 그는 미국에 있는 사찰들을 샅샅이 찾았습니다.
And he couldn't find a suitable temple for it.
그런데 그는 알맞는 절을 찾을 수 없었습니다.
Okay? So, after a long time of searching for a temple.
오케이? 그래서 절을 찾아다닌 지 오랜 시간이 지난 후
He decided he met that guy. That gentleman who is very well known.
그는 그 남자를 만나기로 결심했습니다. 그 신사분은 매우 잘 알려진 사람입니다.
He's very well known in a lot of temples. He says, I can't look for a temple anymore. I got to go back to Vietnam.
그는 많은 절에서 매우 잘 알려져 있습니다. 그가 말하길, 더 이상 절을 찾아다닐 수 없어요. 베트남으로 돌아가야만 하거든요.
So he says, could you help me? help me find a temple for these 54 Arhats. So the man also then continued looking for three years. Over three years.
나를 도와줄 수 있나요? 이 오십사나한을 위한 사찰을 찾도록 도와줄 수 있나요? 그래서 그 남자분은 3년 동안 계속 찾았습니다. 3년 넘게요.
And so I knew him and he knew me even through the times when we have a problem with the nuns here at the temple.
그래서 난 그를 알았었고, 그는 우리가 여기 절에서 비구니 스님들과 문제가 있을 때에도 날 알고 있었습니다.
It caused a lot of problems at the temple until now. And he decided to give it to us.
그건 지금까지도 절에 많은 문제를 일으키고 있답니다. 그리고 그는 사리를 우리에게 주기로 결정했습니다.
so he gave it to us. It turns out, and one of the 54 Arhats is the Buddhist wife.
그렇게 그가 우리에게 사리를 줬습니다. 그리고 알고 보니 오십사나한 중 하나가 바로 부처님의 아내입니다.
Isn't it amazing?
놀랍지 않나요?
It's amazing after 6 months, after we wished for the Buddha's wife’s shariras. they came to us. We didn't have to go look for her. So this is why it's very special.
놀라운 일이에요. 우리가 부처님 아내의 사리를 바라고 6개월 후, 우리에게 온 겁니다. 우리가 그녀를 찾으러 갈 필요가 없었습니다. 그래서 이게 아주 특별한 이유입니다.
And finally we have tremendous affinity with Shakyamuni Buddha.
마지막으로 우리는 석가모니 부처님과 엄청난 인연이 있습니다.
Ugh, and that monkey again. He's very dangerous. He watches you constantly.
이런 또 그 원숭이네요. 얘는 매우 위험해요. 아이가 여러분을 끊임없이 쳐다봅니다.
He can do anything. I tried to teach him how to use a knife, but he never wanted to learn.
아이는 뭐든 다 할 수 있어요. 내가 아이에게 칼 사용법을 가르쳐주려고 해봤는데, 아이는 절대 배우고 싶어하질 않았죠.
The guy is very smart. If he senses you playing with him, he doesn't take you seriously.
이 아이는 매우 총명합니다. 아이가 자기랑 장난치고 있다는 걸 감지하면, 그걸 진지하게 여기지 않습니다.
Anyway, I noticed that Shakyamuni Buddha's family, royal family.
아무튼, 나는 석가모니 부처님의 가족, 그 왕족이 모두다
They're all arhats. Fourth stage arhats. They all attain liberation. Okay?
나한이란 걸, 아라한이란걸 알게 되었습니다. 그들 모두 해탈을 이루었습니다.
And that's why, you see. You see, this is why we're practicing Shakyamuni Buddha's Dharma.
그런 이유로, 보세요. 봐요. 이게 우리가 석가모니 부처님의 다르마를 수행하고 있는 이유입니다.
Because it is his goal, his Dharma is to take care of his family.
왜나하면 이게 그의 목표이기 때문입니다. 그의 다르마는 자신의 가족을 보살피는 것입니다.
Okay. And you broaden it to, if you become enlightened.
여러분이 그걸 넓혀보면, 여러분이 깨닫게 되면,
And then once you become enlightened, you have enough wisdom to realize that we practice in order to help all living beings become enlightened. Okay?
여러분이 깨닫게 되면, 우리가 모든 중생이 깨달음을 이룰 수 있도록 돕기 위해서 수행하고 있다는 것을 실감할 만큼 충분한 지혜를 갖게 됩니다.
So, as it happens last week we had three new novices.
그런데 이런 일이 지난 주 일어남과 동시에, 우리에게 3명의 사미승도 생겼습니다.
And they encountered quite a bit of obstruction from their family.
그리고 가족으로부터 꽤 많은 장애를 맞닥뜨렸습니다.
And it's because, only because the family do not realize that they practice in order to attain liberation first. Then find a way to come back and help the family member attain liberation.
그건 왜냐하면, 이건 단순히 이들(사미승)이 우선 해탈을 얻고, 그런 후 돌아와서 가족들도 해탈을 얻을 수 있는 방법을 찾기 위해서 수행한다는 점을 가족들이 깨닫지 못해서 그렇습니다.
Okay. You need to attain liberation first before you can really help others.
여러분이 타인을 정말로 도울 수 있기에 앞서 해탈부터 얻어야 합니다.
Okay? Alright. So we are gonna stop right here today. And so that we can prepare, or the people who come early, they can get started on the exhibition.
알았죠? 좋습니다. 오늘은 여기서 마치도록 하겠습니다. 그래야 일부러 일찍 온 사람들이 (사리) 전시회를 위한 준비를 시작할 수 있습니다.
