모스크바와 사랑에 빠지다
Our First Page in Moscow
이 도시에 발을 내딛는 순간, 나는 예상치 못하게 그리고 완전히 사랑에 빠져버렸다. 수많은 나라를 여행하고 여러 도시에서 살아봤지만, 모스크바만큼 내 마음을 뒤흔든 곳은 없었던 것 같다.
뉴욕은 눈부셨고, 파리는 매혹적이었지만, 모스크바는 다른 도시들과는 전혀 다른 설레임을 안겨주었다. 이 도시는 마치 살아 숨 쉬는 무대 같다. 마치 거리마다, 계절마다 예술과 문화가 춤을 추고 있는 듯 하다.
모스크바는 도시의 모든 구석이 아름다움으로 가득 차 있는 곳이다. 수세기 전 이야기를 속삭이는 듯한 웅장한 건물들과 과거의 시간을 다시 불러 온 것만 같은 박물관과 미술관, 일상을 함께하는 문학, 몸과 영혼을 동시에 움직이는 오페라와 발레, 깊은 울림을 주는 오케스트라, 끝없이 뻗은 아름다운 공원, 계절마다 색을 바꾸는 자연까지. 숨이 막힐 정도로 아름답고 도시 곳곳에서 느껴지는 웅장함에 깊은 전율을 느꼈다.
하지만 모스크바를 진정으로 마법 같은 도시로 만드는 건 따로있다. 바로 예술이 일상에 자리잡고 있다는 것. 이 도시에 거주하는 가장 어린아이들에게까지 다정하게 스며든다. 마치 아이들을 품에 안고 꿈꾸고, 상상하고, 탐함하라고 이 도시 전체가 말해주는 것만 같다. 인형극장부터 예술 체험 워크숍, 과학 박물관, 야외 음악회, 도서관, 아이들을 위한 오페라, 오케스트라, 뮤지컬 관련 체험까지… 커다란 어린이 백화점이 따로 있을 정도니 마치 아이들에게 “이 세상은 너희들의 무대야, 마음껏 네 꿈을 펼쳐보렴” 이라고 자상하게 말해주는 것 같다.
그리고 내가 이 도시에 반해버린 또 한가지 이유는 바로 책에 대한 사랑이다. 러시아 사람들은 책 읽는 것을 정말 좋아한다. 지하철역 플랫폼이든 공원 산책길이든 도시 곳곳에 책 자판기가 있다. 누구나 멈춰 서서 한 권의 책을 집어 들고, 잠시 현실을 떠나 다른 세상에 빠져드는 그 모습을 바라보고 있자니 너무 낭만적이고 아름다워 보였다.
아이와 나는 이 멋진 도시에 매료되어 끊임없이 영감을 받고 았다. 아이도 나도 이 도시에서 내뿜는 압도적인 에너지에 영향을 받아 삶을 대하는 태도나 마음가짐이 또 한 번 새로워진 것 같다.
우리는 이 도시에 머무는 동안 함께 이 곳에 대한 책을 만들기로 결심했다. 이 도시의 문학과 예술에 더욱 더 깊이 빠져들고, 마주하는 아름다운 풍경들을 그려보기로 했다. 낯선 이방인으로써 이 곳에서 살아가며 느끼는 모든 설레임과 깊은 전율을 아이와 함께 각자의 시선으로 풀어 낼 수 있다니 기대가 된다.
내 아이의 유년시절을 이렇게 멋진 곳에서 보낼 수 있게 됐음을 감사하며.
The moment I set foot in this city, I found myself utterly and unexpectedly falling in love. I’ve wandered through countless countries, lived in many cities across the world, but none has stirred my heart the way Moscow has.
New York dazzled, Paris charmed, but Moscow feels like something else entirely a living, breathing stage where culture and art dance through every street and season.
Every corner of the city hums with beauty. Majestic buildings that seem to whisper stories of centuries past, museums and galleries where time pauses, literature that lingers in the air like poetry, opera and ballet that move both body and soul, orchestras weaving mysic into the city’s heartbeat, parks that stretch endlessly, and nature that shifts colors with every turn of the calendar. It’s breathtaking almost overwhelming in its quiet grandeur.
But what makes Moscow truly magical is how this love for art and beauty isn’t kept behind closed doors, reserved only for the grown and the learned. It flows freely, wrapping itself around even the smallest of residents. The city holds its children close, inviting them to dream, imagine, and explore. From puppet theaters to hands-on art workshops, from science museums to open-air concerts, Moscow seems to lean down and whisper to every child:
“This world is your stage.”
And then, there’s the city’s love affair with books. Russians read constantly, everywhere. Scattered across the city are book vending machines, quiet little guardians of stories, offering a novel to anyone passing by whether on a subway platform or in the middle of a park stroll. Watching people pause in their day to open a book, to disappear for a while into another world, it fills me with joy I hadn’t known I was missing.
Now, both my child and I find ourselves enchanted and endlessly inspired by Moscow. So we’ve made ourselves a promise. To write about this city, to sketch its colors and sounds, to dive deeper into its literature and art, and to capture every tremor of wonder we feel as foreigners finding home here.
One page at a time, we’ll build our own small book a love letter to Moscow. And most of all, we hope that through these pages, someone, somewhere, might feel even a flicker of the joy and awe we’ve felt… and perhaps, they too will fall in love with this remarkable city.
