Integrity의 속성(일관된 인격의 온전함)

온전한 인격의 모습을 강조하는 영미권의 사상이 담긴 단어인 integrity는 우리말로 일대일 대응되는 단어가 없다.

정직하며 변화를 거부하는 강력한 도덕적 원칙을 가진 속성

A person can be said to have integrity when they have strong ethical and moral principles and adhere to these even when they are not under public scrutiny.

그러니까 남들이 시선이 닿지 않는 곳에서조차 일관되게 나타나는 인격을 말한다. 대체적으로 도덕적 원칙을 지키다가도 자신의 이익을 위해 잠시 타협하는 것은 integrity의 속성이 아니다.

빌 하이벨스 목사님은 인격을 이렇게 정의했다.

“아무도 보는 이 없을 때 당신은 누구인가?”

아주 먼 옛날(?) 중학교 은사님께 결혼 직전 아내와 함께 인사드리러 갔을 때, 내가 한결같은 사람이라고 아내에게 이야기해 주셨다.

시간과 공간의 제약 없는 인격을 꿈꾸던 내게 최고의 극찬처럼 느껴져서 그 감동을 아직도 잊을 수 없다.

당연히 완성된 한결같음은 아니었지만, 내가 추구하던 삶의 지향점을 일깨워주셨던 말씀이었다.

난 아들, 남편, 아빠, 선생님으로서 일체화된 모습을 꿈꿨다.

교사와 부모로서의 동일한 역할을 할 수 있기를 꿈꿨다.

그 꿈은 여전히 미완성 과제로 남았고, 그 끝이 보이지 않지만 포기할 수는 없었다.

학창시절부터 막연하게 가지고 있던 그 일체화의 개념이 이미 영어단어로 존재하고 있었다.

이 단어의 발견은 내게 전율 그 자체였다.

지난주 대구 동신교회 목사님 설교를 듣고 integrity의 의미를 더 확실하게 떠올렸다.

빛과 소금의 역할을 하기 위해서는 integrity를 가져야 합니다. integrity는 언제, 어디서나 동일한 자세로 살아가는 것입니다. 빛은 언제, 어디서나 빛이기 때문입니다. 교회 안에서의 모습과 교회 밖에서의 모습이 동일해야 합니다. 가정에서의 모습과 직장에서의 모습도 동일해야 합니다.

우리가 어떤 사람의 진짜 성품을 알려면 가장 연약한 사람들을 대하는 모습을 보면 알 수 있습니다.
