샴페인 슈퍼노바 가 무슨 뜻일까? 샴페인색의 초신성? 술이나 마약의 은어? 뭐든 간에 파도소리와 어쿠스틱 기타 소리로 시작하는 이 노래는 단숨에 나를 사로잡았다. 오아시스의 두 번째 앨범은 완벽에 가깝다. 비틀스가 이끈 브릿팝의 전성기를 이야기할 정도였으니까. 다른 수록곡들이 워낙 인기가 많았지만 이 노래의 팬덤도 지지 않는다. 지금도 가사를 이해하지 못하고 작사가조차도 가사에 대한 언급이 아리송 하지만 공연장에선 수많은 팬들이 목놓아 따라 부른다.

리암 갤러거의 목소리는 이 노래를 한 차원 더 높은 경지로 만들었다. 나에게 기타 솔로가 전부였던 시절에는 리암의 보컬을 크게 신경 쓰지 않았다. 노엘의 작곡과 솔로에 대한 찬사만 했을 뿐. 지금 들어보니 리암의 목소리는 시대를 담고 있다. 밴드의 프론트 맨이자 보컬인 그가 없었다면 오아시스는 존재하지 않았을 거다. 이후의 앨범들이 혹평을 받아도 2집 Morning glory 앨범과 비교 선상에 있는 앨범은 이 세상에 존재치 않는다. 영국락의 절정을 이끌고 하락을 이끌어낸 그들을 비난하곤 하지만 시대의 선택이었을 뿐. 좋은 곡들로 내 삶을 채워준 그들이 고마울 따름이다.

오아시스의 공연 실황을 보면 팬들이 처음부터 끝까지 따라 부르고 함께 한다. 스마트폰이 없던 그 시절의 영상을 보면 느낌이 묘하다. 지금 영상들은 스마트폰을 높이 들고 그들을 개인의 것으로 담아낸다. 영상에는 그 순간의 공기와 온도, 냄새, 미세하게 피치가 조절되지 않는 스피커들이 담겨있진 않다. 그래도 영상 전송이 가능하기 때문에 나 또한 집과 스마트폰으로 그들의 음악을 즐기고 있다. 오아시스의 음악을 내 귓가에 담아 둘 수 있는 세상이라니.

샴페인 슈퍼노바를 듣다 보면 7분이라는 시간은 길지 않다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이것은 내 취향이기에 그렇게 느끼는 것일 수도 있다. 아내는 내가 듣는 노래들이 하나같이 길단다. 기승전결의 마무리를 지을 때까지 최소한의 시간이 필요하다고 이야기하지만 내가 좋아하는 곡들은 짧아도 6분이긴 하다. Bohemian Rhapsody, Still Got the Blues, Free Bird, Comfortably Numb, Painkiller, Highway star… 등등등. 좋은 음악을 듣다 보면 내가 더 나은 사람이라는 착각에 빠진다. 착각이 아니게끔 살 수 있도록, 그들의 음악과 함께 조금씩 더 나은 사람이 되도록 노력해야지.
