** 미국 신문 1면을 장식한 우리의 미국살이에서 계속

마치 꿈만 같던 수료식이 끝났고 세은이는 무려 신문 1면을 장식했다.

선물로 받은 도서관 머그컵, 연필 같은 것들은 너무나 소중해서 쓰지도 못하겠다. 조심조심 챙겨서 서랍에 넣었다.

나는, 우리 가족이 이제는 엄연히 이 동네의 일원으로 살게 되었다는 생각에, 그 감사함을 모두에게 표현하고 싶었다.

그들의 노력이 나 같은 이민자에게 매우 큰 도움이 되고 있다는 것을 알려줘야 했다.

왜냐하면 가르침을 준 사람이 보람을 느끼도록 해주는 것이 도움 받은 자의 의무라고 생각하기 때문이다.

수료식의 벅찬 감정이 사라지기 전 어느 날 저녁에 나는 모두에게 이메일을 썼다.

I still can't believe I was invited to such a beautiful event.

I will remember what happened at the ceremony for a very long time.

I'm from S. Korea, the homeland of squid game in Netflix, not the place of missle bomb.

As you know, I've been living in the US for about a year now, and after a year, I have to go back to my hometown.

I could have been hiding in Korean groups and surviving for two years. (Actually, there are quite a few of them.) I couldn't do that because I did not come here for sightseeing, but to live together as a neighbor.

Ah.... Even if my heart is like that, I feel that life as an immigrant is difficult and has many lonely aspects.

I had to go through a process that the natives would never understand, and there were many things that were too obvious to them but unfamiliar to me.

I came to the US passing the "Welcome to New York" sign in JFK, but no one welcomed me actually.

Everyone just does their own thing. (Actually, this is quite natural, not someone's fault.)

I wanted to make an effort to be someone's neighbor and friend. Attending this class was one of those efforts.

I wanted to show something to my neighbors who help me and treat me kindly, put up with my broken English, and listen to the end with their patience.

I wanted to understand things familiar to them and their culture that I did not learn in my hometown.

Getting a little closer to them, that's the real reason I signed up for this class.

This class has helped me understand a lot about American society and now I feel more confident than before.

I could feel every Wednesday that you put all your heart into this class.

Thanks to this, I was able to get not only advanced information, but also good friends.

This is absolutely something special which gold cannot buy.

I love you, this library, this class. This term's class has ended now, but if there is another chance while I am in the US, I would like to join it.

I would also like to thank the director who runs this. The words she gave as a greeting for the event were very impressive.

I hope this class with wonderful people like you will last for a really long time.

I am very grateful to you for always teaching passionately, and I would like to maintain good relationships as neighbors and friends.

PS. : Such a wonderful gift is absolutely incredible. I will keep it for a very, very long time.

도서관 선생님들, 관장님, 모두 안녕하세요.

그렇게 멋진 수료식에 제가 초대받았다는 것을 아직도 믿을 수 없습니다.

나는 이 일을 아주 오랫동안 기억하겠습니다. 매우 감사합니다.

아시다시피 저는 미사일이 날아다니는 북한이 아니라, 넷플릭스 오징어게임의 고향 대한민국에서 왔습니다.

저는 미국에 와서 1년째 살고 있고 앞으로 1년을 더 살고 나면 한국으로 돌아갑니다.

저는 그 2년 동안 한국사람 사이에서 숨어 지내기만 할 수도 있었습니다. (실제 그런 사람들이 꽤 있습니다.)

하지만 저는 스쳐가는 여행자가 되려고 미국에 온 것이 아니라서 그렇게 할 수는 없었습니다. 여러분의 이웃이 되고 싶어서 온 것이기 때문입니다.

하지만, 비록 제가 그런 마음이 있다고 하더라도 이민자로서의 삶은 힘들고 외로운 것입니다.

아마 미국에서 나고 자란 여러분들은 이해할 수 없는 과정들을 저는 거쳐야 했고, 여러분에게 당연한 일들이 저에겐 생소한 것도 여전히 많습니다.

제가 JFK 공항에 도착했을 때, "Welcome to New York"이라는 문구를 지나 미국으로 들어왔는데, 실제로는 어느 누구도 우리를 환영해주지 않았습니다. 모두가 그저 무심히 자신의 일을 할 뿐입니다.

저는 미국에 와서 누군가의 이웃, 친구가 되고 싶었습니다. 제가 이 수업에 참여했던 것은 그러한 노력 중 하나였습니다. 저에게 도움을 주고, 친절하고, 서투른 영어를 인내심으로 끝까지 들어주는 이웃들이 있기에 저는 그들을 위해 뭔가 하고 있음을 보여주고 싶었습니다. 그리고 미국인들에게는 익숙하지만 한국에서는 알지 못했던 많은 것들과 미국 문화 자체를 이해하고 싶었습니다. 이를 통해 미국 이웃들과 가까워지는 것이 제가 이 수업을 수강하게 된 진짜 이유입니다.

이 수업을 통해 저는 미국 사회에 대한 많은 것을 이해하게 되었고 그전보다 자신감이 생겼습니다. 매주 수요일마다 선생님들이 이 수업에 정성을 다하고 계시다는 걸 느낄 수 있었습니다. 덕분에 많은 지식은 물론, 좋은 친구들까지 얻을 수 있었습니다. 이것은 정말 돈으로는 살 수 없는 아주 특별한 것입니다.

저는 이 도서관, 이 수업 그리고 모든 선생님들에게 애정을 갖고 있습니다. 비록 시민권 수업은 이제 끝났지만, 제가 미국에 있는 동안 또 다른 것에 참여할 기회가 있다면 꼭 하고 싶습니다. 그리고 이 프로그램이 운영될 수 있게 해 준 도서관 관장님께도 감사 인사를 전하고 싶습니다. 관장님이 수료식 연설은 참 인상적으로 느껴졌습니다.

이렇게 좋은 사람들과 함께하는 도서관 수업이 정말 오랫동안 지속될 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

항상 열정적으로 가르쳐주시는 선생님께 진심으로 감사드리며, 이웃으로서, 친구로서 좋은 관계를 유지하고 싶습니다.

This is just so beautifully written! I am so very glad that you found friendship and community here at the Library.

It is a good place, with good people. Really, it seems to be one of the places which is still good in America, as so much of America is increasingly disappointing.
