바르셀로나 공원 풍경 - 1
새들이 한 사람이 시키는 대로 논다. 그의 머리 어깨 팔에 그가 시키는 대로 새들은 앉았다가 날아가곤 한다. 그는 구경꾼들에게 너도 나처럼 할 수 있다고 유혹한다, 그를 따라 해 본 이들이 환호하며 돈을 건넨다. 새 주인인 듯한 호객꾼 곁에는 큼지막한 새모이 주머니가 있었다.
몇 발자국 움직이자 같은 종류의 새들 천지였다. 제멋대로 마구 날고 앉고 노는 새들이.
마음껏 자유롭게 노는 새들과 그들에게 먹이를 주어 그 미끼로 먹고사는 이와 그 먹이로 배 채우며 잠시 놀아주는 새들과 그들 사이를 의심하는 나와… 그 사이에는 뭔 차이가 있을까?
공원 풍경 - 2
온통 중국 상점거리였다.
상점주인들은 모두 중국인들로 보였고, 손님들은 현지인들이거나 관광객들이었다. 이 도시는 중국사회가 제법 크구나 했었다.
알고 보니 중국 춘절 기념행사였는데 그 규모가 내 상상 범위를 넘어서는 것이었다. 이어진 춘절 기념 퍼레이드에는 그야말로 어마어마한 사람들이 모여들었다. 내 작은 몸과 작은 키로는 그 퍼레이드에 가까이 갈 엄두조차 나지 않았다.
역사 이래 모든 제국들이 한번쯤 발자국을 남긴 곳, 그것으로 한 때 제국 행세를 했던 이 나라에 이젠 춘제인가?
크루즈
이 나이에 벌써 크루즈? 했었다. 몇 해전에 바하마 크루즈를 타 본 적은 있다만, 그땐 나이와 상관 짓지는 않았었다. 이번엔 왠지 늙어서 타보는 경험 아닐까 하는 생각에 많이 저어했었다
그냥 쉬며 먹고 마시는 시간 누려도 부끄럽지 않은 나이를 확인하는 정도라면… 하는 생각으로 지중해 몇 개 도시를 정박하며 돈다는 배에 올랐다.
내가 여기까지 오며 부끄럽지 않은 때가 있었나 하는 물음을 안고.

Park Scene 1
In a park in Barcelona, birds were playing with a man. They sat on his head, shoulders, and arms whenever he told them to, and then flew away. He tempted the visitors, saying they could do the same. People tried it, laughed with joy, and gave him money.
Next to him was a large bag of bird feed.
But just a few steps away, there were many birds of the same kind flying freely everywhere—landing, flying, and playing however they wanted.
The birds that play freely, the man who feeds them and makes a living from them, the birds that eat his food and briefly play along, and me, watching them with suspicion—
What difference is there among us?
Park Scene 2
It looked like a street full of Chinese shops. The shop owners all seemed Chinese, while the customers were local people or tourists. I thought the Chinese community in this city must be quite large.
Later I learned that it was a Chinese New Year celebration. The size of the festival was far beyond my imagination.
During the parade that followed, an enormous crowd gathered. Because I am small and not very tall, I could not even get close to the parade.
This place has seen many empires leave their footprints throughout history. And the country that once acted like an empire is now celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival.
Cruise
At my age, already taking a cruise? That was my first thought. I had taken a cruise to the Bahamas a few years ago, but at that time I did not connect it with age. This time I wondered if I was doing it because I was getting old.
Still, if this age allows me to enjoy some time resting, eating, and drinking without shame, perhaps it is enough.
So I boarded a ship that would stop at several cities around the Mediterranean.
And I carried with me one quiet question:
Have there ever been days in my life when I lived without shame?
