언어 표현의 깊이를 더하는 방법: 형용사 수식 표현

의사소통에서 뉘앙스는 생각보다 중요하다. 지난번에 형용사를 단계적(Gradable)과 비단계적(Ungradable) 형용사로 구분하는 법을 살펴봤다면, 이번에는 이 형용사들을 더욱 효과적으로 수식하는 방법에 대해 생각해보자.
1. 형용사를 수식하는 표현들은 형용사의 유형에 따라 선택해야 한다.
"what we can do is use some modifying expressions. Now we've got three sets here."
absolutely, totally and completely
a little, slightly, pretty, fairly, very and extremely
really, quite
2. 비단계적(Ungradable) 형용사에는 특정 수식어만 사용할 수 있다.
absolutely, totally and completely: 'ungradable'
"So we can say, oh, it's absolutely freezing or it's absolutely unacceptable, but we can't use them with gradable adjectives. Like we can't say it's absolutely hot or it's totally cold. It doesn't make sense. The grammar is wrong."
3. 단계적(Gradable) 형용사에는 정도를 나타내는 수식어가 어울린다.
a little, slightly, pretty, fairly, very and extremely: 'gradable'
"They go with gradable adjectives. So a little hot, slightly cold, pretty angry and so on. But they can't go with ungradable. Like we've said, we can't say it's a little freezing. Pretty unacceptable. Okay, it doesn't make sense."
4. 일부 수식어는 두 종류의 형용사 모두와 사용할 수 있다.
really, quite: 'both'
"So you could say it's really hot or it's really boiling."
5. 자연스러운 표현을 위해서는 다양한 형용사와 수식어를 균형 있게 사용하는 것이 중요하다.
"And what we can also notice is that the speaker, whoever the person is a very kind person, I think, with good taste doesn't only use ungradable adjectives. Okay, because that's going to sound unnatural if you put everything like very, very extreme."
6. 지나치게 극단적인 표현만 사용하면 부자연스럽게 들린다.
"So you say it was freezing, it was delicious, it was totally blah blah blah. It will sound like not like a native English speaker. Basically, it's going to sound artificial. It's going to sound weird, strange."
7. 균형 잡힌 표현이 의사소통의 품격을 높인다.
"So you use a mix. Notice we use busy and we used cold and we used soon, but we also showed our high level vocabulary by using absolutely delicious and totally fantastic. And that's the kind of mix that we want to have."
8. 이러한 표현법은 글쓰기나 말하기에서 특히 중요하다.
"Using those is going to help you in all parts of the exam, but particularly in writing and speaking, because then you have to produce English, you have to show your English."
일상 대화에서도 이런 원칙은 동일하게 적용된다. 우리가 말할 때, 모든 것을 극단적으로 표현하면 오히려 신뢰성이 떨어진다. '완전 최악이었어', '진짜 끔찍했어'와 같은 표현을 자주 사용하는 사람보다, 상황에 맞게 적절한 강도의 표현을 선택하는 사람의 말이 더 설득력 있게 들린다.
언어 감각을 키우는 가장 좋은 방법은 다양한 표현을 접하고 직접 사용해보는 것이다.
"Try to pay attention to these gradable and non graded or ungradable adjectives and notice how they are used and notice how they're modified as well. Because really, you know, you can learn these and they're not that difficult to learn. But when you when you're using them, the best situation in which to use them is when you feel very familiar with them."
결국, 효과적인 의사소통의 비결은 다양하고 적절한 표현을 자연스럽게 구사하는 데 있다. 단순히 규칙을 아는 것을 넘어, 그 감각을 내 것으로 만들 때 진정한 언어의 힘을 발휘할 수 있다. 오늘부터 주변 사람들의 표현을 관찰하고, 내 표현도 한 단계 업그레이드해보자.
