어벤추린은 자기 자신을 증명하고 싶어 안달이 난 어린 용이다. 그녀는 가족에게서 몰래 도망쳐 더 큰 세계로 나간다. 그리고 초콜릿이라고 불리는 처음 보는 혼합물을 만들고 있는 인간을 만난다. 어벤추린은 그 혼합물을 맛보게 해달라고 요구한다. 하지만 그 사람은 요리 마법사였고 남자는 초콜릿에 마법을 걸어 어벤추린을 인간으로 만들어 버린다.
연약한 몸이 된 어벤추린은 시내를 정처 없이 떠돈다. 그러다 그녀는 초콜릿 제조업자가 있다는 걸 알게 되고 자신도 초콜릿 도제가 되겠다고 결심한다. 이제 그녀는 초콜릿을 만드는 방법을 배우는 동시에 인간관계도 터득해 나가야 한다.
어벤추린은 신선함 그 자체이다. 사납고 의지가 강하고 즉흥적이며 웃기다. 그녀가 인간과 우정을 터득해가는 과정을 보는 건 정말 재밌다. 초콜릿 가게 홍보 전단지를 뿌리는 실케, 초콜릿 장인 마리나와 동업자 호르스트는 어벤추린과 협력하는 관계로 시작한다. 시간이 지날수록 이들의 우정은 깊어진다. 반면 어벤추린의 약점을 잡고 그녀를 도시 밖으로 끌어내려는 기회를 호시탐탐 노리는 인간들도 있다. 인간의 몸이 된 어벤추린은 물 밖을 나온 물고기 같은 느낌이 들지만 초콜릿에 대한 열정을 바탕으로 자신의 위치를 찾기 위해 노력한다.
초콜릿 하트 드레곤은 매우 따뜻하고 재밌는 책이다. 짧은 줄거리만으로 이 책의 진가를 보여주긴 힘들다. 이 책은 중학생들을 위한 책이지만, 어른들에게도 많은 메시지를 전해준다.

Delightful! Dragons, magic, and chocolate

Oh my goodness, this book. I love this book.
Aventurine is a young dragon eager to prove herself, so she slips out of the family lair to take on the wider world. The first thing she encounters is a human brewing a concoction unlike anything she's ever tasted--chocolate! She demands a taste, but what Aventurine doesn't know is that the human is a food mage, and he bespells the chocolate to transform her into a human.
Weak and defenseless as she's never been before, Aventurine travels on to a human town. There, she discovers chocolatiers and determines to apprentice herself to one. Now she has to navigate human relationships as well as learning the craft of chocolate making.
Aventurine is an utter delight, fierce--as she'd be the first to tell you--and determined, impulsive and funny. Watching her figure out humans and friendship is such fun. Silke, a girl who uses handbills to advertise the chocolate house, and Marina and Horst, the chocolatier and maitre d', respectively, start as allies and become more to Aventurine as the book progresses. And there are some humans who seem determined to watch Aventurine for the slightest misstep, any excuse to throw her out of the city. She feel s like a fish out of water, stuck in a body not her own, but her determination to find--or make-- her place now that she's discovered her passion for chocolate.
This is such a warm, funny book; the mere plot description doesn't convey how wonderful it is. It is a middle grade book, but the themes will speak to an older audience as well.

이 책을 읽는 건 황홀한 경험이었다. 어벤추린은 겉으로만 자신감에 차 있는 사나운 용이다. 한편 실케와 마리나는 멋진 캐릭터들이다. 뛰어난 사업 감각을 가진 실케의 제안을 거절하기란 매우 어렵다. 마리나는 놀라운 장인정신을 갖고 있지만 그렇다고 해서 겉모습처럼 주변을 돌보지 않는 사람은 아니다.
어벤추린이 실케와 마리나(어쩌면 호르스트와도)와 끈끈한 관계를 맺어가는 모습이 정말 좋았다. 어벤추린은 인간에게 의리가 있다는 것을 믿지 않았다. 하지만 이들이 자신을 진심으로 아껴주자 그녀는 마음의 벽을 허물고 자신의 드레곤 가족에게 그랬던 것처럼 의리를 지켰다.

Delightful middle grade about confidence, friendship, and family

This was such a delight.
Aventurine is so determined to be fierce, but she starts off with only superficial self-confidence. Silke and Marina are also both wonderful characters. It's so hard to say no to Silke, and she has great business sense. Marina is dedicated first and foremost to her craft, but despite appearances, that doesn't mean that she doesn't care about people.
I loved seeing her develop strong ties to Silke and Marina (and maybe even Horst). She doesn't trust humans to have any loyalty, but when she sees that these people do care about her, she shows to her human friends the kind of fierce loyalty we see within her dragon family.

스테파니 버지스가 쓴 최고의 책 중 하나다. 난 이 책의 모든 걸 사랑한다. 매우 잘 쓰인 이 책은 성인들도 재밌게 읽을만하다. 제일 좋았던 건 작가의 문체였다. 난 어린이 책이 과장으로 채워지는 걸 정말 싫어한다. 그런 책들은 어른들이 읽었을 때 거북함을 참기 힘들다. 당신은 이 책을 읽고 자녀들과 현실적으로 그리고 이야기 나눌 수 있을 것이다. 자녀의 성장과 생각의 발전에도 도움이 되는 방식으로 말이다. 두 번째로 좋았던 점은 어린 용이 소녀로 변한다는 점이었다. 이 책 내내 어벤추린은 단 한번도 ‘용’스럽지 않은 적이 없었다. 모든 면에서 그녀는 흥미로운 캐릭터다. 주인공에게 애착이 갔고 그녀가 자신을 찾는 여행을 따라가는 과정은 매우 즐거웠다.
우정과 가족, 자신에게 진실되기, 그리고 목표를 찾고 이루는 것 등 여러 주제를 훌륭하게 그린 책이다.

Best POV by non-human character I read.

One of the best books by Stephanie Burgis so far. I absolutely loved every bit about the book. It was most definitely very well written and felt believable even to an adult reader.
What I love the most was the tone Burgis used to talk to children. The story never exaggerated things. I hate when children’s book use exaggerations, it makes it too ridiculous for the adults to read. You can talk to kids on their level and still be realistic and serious. I think that adds to their development and gives kids’ minds some credit.
The second thing I adored was the way the author wrote the POV of the young dragon in girls form. She never, not for a moment lost the authentic feel of her dragonessness. In overall Aventurine was an exciting character. I loved her and I loved to accompany her on her journey to self-discovery.
And of course, the book dealt wonderfully with all the important issues like: friendship, family, being true to yourself, importance of finding and achieving your goals, diversity and acceptance and so much more.
