84. What are auxiliary verbs?
조동사라는 개념을 지도해 보자. 영어의 조동사는 동사 앞에서 부가적인 의미를 더 해 준다.
Q: What are auxiliary verbs? 조동사는 뭐지?
A: can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must; they are auxiliary verbs.
‘can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must’; 이들은 조동사이다.
Auxiliary verbs can help verbs to add more information. 조동사는 동사의 뜻을 더해 준다.
Q: When do we use “may”? ‘May’는 언제 쓰지?
A: We use may to ask permission or to show possibility. ‘may는 허락을 묻거나 가능성을 보여 줄 때 쓴다.
May I go to the bathroom? It shows “permission”. ’ 화장실 가도 돼요?‘ 이 문장은 허락을 요청함을 보여 준다.
It may be cold tomorrow. Please wear a coat. 아마 내일 추울 거야. 코트를 입어라.

“May” shows about 50% possibility and “might” shows about 20% possibility.
’may’는 50% 정도의 가능성을 보여 주고, ‘might’는 약 20%의 가능성을 보여준다.
Q: What about “maybe”? ‘maybe’는 언제 쓰일까?
A: “Maybe” shows possibility. But, it is an adverb. ‘maybe’는 가능성을 보여 준다. 그것은 부사이다.
Maybe I will be a scientist when I grow up. 나는 아마 자라서 과학자가 될 것이다.

can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must; they are auxiliary verbs.
Auxiliary verbs can help verbs to add more information. ‘add’는 왼손의 검지와 오른손의 검지로 더하기의 개념인 + 모양을 만들어 준다.
When do we use “may”? We use may to ask permission or to show possibility. ‘may’는 알파벳 수와 M을 만들어 준다. 오른손의 엄지를 접고 그위에 검지, 중지, 약지를 올려 주고 새끼 손가락은 옆에서 나란히 같이 접어 준다. ‘permission’은 왼손의 엄지만 세워 위, 아래로 올리고 내려 준다. ‘possibility’는 오른손의 손등이 위를 향하고 엄지와 새끼 손가락만 세운 상태에서 엄지와 새끼 손가락을 위아래로 내려 주면서 전체적인 손의 균형을 잡아 준다.
