16. ‘Adjective’ 형용사가 뭘까?

형용사는 무미건조한 글을 꾸며 준다. 영어의 형용사를 가지고 글을 멋스럽게 표현하기 위해서는 그 개념을 명확하게 이해 해야 한다.

An adjective can change a noun. 형용사는 명사를 바꿀 수 있다.

Beautiful girl, tall boyl; beautiful and tall, they are adjectives. ‘아름다운 소녀’, ‘키 큰 소년’, ‘아름다운’, ‘키 큰’, 은 형용사다.

An adjective can describe the subject. 형용사는 주어를 묘사해 준다.

She is beautiful. He is tall. 그녀는 아름답다. 그는 키가 크다.

형용사 개념을 가르칠 때 반대되는 개념을 같이 소개하면 훨씬 이해하기도 쉽고 기억에도 오래 남는다.

Big ball, little ball, big and little; they are opposite adjective. 큰 공 작은 공, ‘큰’과 ‘작은’는 반대 형용사다.

Fat man, thin man, fat and thin; they are opposite adjective. 뚱뚱한 남자와 마른 남자, ‘뚱뚱한’과 ‘마른’은 반대 형용사이다.

Hot fire, cold ice, hot and cold; they are opposite adjective. 뜨거운 불, 차가운 얼음, ‘뜨거운’과 ‘차가운’은 반대 형용사이다.

Weak man, strong man, weak and strong; they are opposite adjective. 약한 남자와 강한 남자, ‘약한’과 ‘강한’은 반대 형용사이다.

Long snake, short snake, long and short; they are opposite adjective. 긴 뱀, 짧은 뱀, ‘긴’과 ‘짧은’ 은 형용사이다.

언어교육에서 그림의 역할도 중요하다. 형용사를 지도할 때는 열 마디 말 보다 제대로 된 그림이 훨씬 전달력이 뛰어나다.

결국, 형용사라는 개념을 아래와 같이 영어로 말할 수 있을 때 정확하게 자신의 지식으로 가져갈 수 있고 이를 통해 언어로 표현할 수 있는 실력이 서서히 자란다.
