65. Comparatives with adjectives

형용사의 비교급은 그 규칙성이 복잡하고 이해하기 쉽지 않지만 우선 최소한의 예시문을 가지고 내용을 이해하는 게 좋다. 물론, 비교급을 설명하기 전에 형용사에 대한 개념을 명확하게 이해하고 있어야 한다.

We use Comparatives with adjectives to compare two things in the sentence. 두 가지를 문장에서 비교하기 위해 형용사 부사급을 쓴다. To make comparatives with adjectives, add “–er” at the end of adjective and put “than” in front of the last noun. 형용사를 가지고 비교급을 만들기 위해서는, 형용사 뒤에 ‘~er’를 붙여 준다. 그리고 마지막 명사 앞에 ‘than’을 놓아준다.

Kenny is older than Jimmy. Kenny는 Jimmy보다 나이가 더 많다.

Rule 1: One syllable adjectives that finish with one vowel and one consonant,

double consonant and add “–er.” Big -> bigger hot->hotter

단음적의 형용사가 하나의 모음과 하나의 자음으로 끝날 때, 자음음 중복시켜주고 ‘~er’를 붙여준다.

Rule 2 : When the adjectives finish with a consonant and “y”, drop the “y” and add “ –ier”.

Easy -> easier dirty ->dirtier

형용사가 자음과 ‘y’로 끝나면, ‘y’를 떨어 트리고 ‘~ier’을 추가해 준다.

Rule 3: More than two syllables adjectives use ‘more’ in front of it.

Expensive -> more expensive beautiful -> more beautiful

이음 절 이상의 형용사는 형용사 앞에 ‘more’를 사용한다.

Rule 4: Some adjectives change differently. These are irregular adjectives.

몇몇의 형용사들은 다르게 변한다. 이들을 불규칙 형용사라고 한다.

Good -> Better Bad -> worse Fun -> more fun.

결국, 형용사의 비교급을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 아래와 같이 영어로 말할 수 있어야 한다.
