어떤 전시?
“≪르네상스 느와르≫에서는 흑인으로 살아가고 존재하는 아프리카계 미국인 예술가들의 개인, 혹은 집단의 서사 속 ‘흑인성(Blackness)’을 탐구합니다. 그들은 ‘이중 의식(double consciousness, W.E.B. 뒤보이스(W.E.B. DuBois)가 고안한 말)’을 가지고 살아가며, 끊임없이 ‘주의(ism)’들과 투쟁하며 살아갑니다. 인종주의, 색차별주의, 자본주의, 식민주의, 도피주의, 그리고 비판주의까지, 그들은 ‘예술적 행동주의’로 대항합니다.
‘타자’로부터 주체를 되찾고, 유럽중심주의적 시각으로부터 문화적인 해방을 표명하는 작가들의 생동감 넘치는 회화, 프린트, 사진, 조각, 개념 작업들은 40여 년에 걸친 예술 활동의 세대를 아우르며 흑인 경험의 사회, 정치, 역사적 여정을 그리는 연대기가 됩니다.”
볼만 한 이유는?
이번 UTA 아티스트 스페이스에서 열리는 새 가상 전시는 12명의 흑인 미술가(Tawny Chatmon, Wesley Clark, Alfred Conteh, Larry Cook, Morel Doucet, Monica Ikegwu, Ronald Jackson, M. Scott, Ronald Jackson, M. Scott Johnson, Delita Martin, Arvie Smith, Nelson Stevens, and Felandus Thames)의 작품을 한 데 모은 것으로, 발티모어의 갤러리 마이어티스의 관장인 마이어티스 베돌라(Myrtis Bedolla)가 기획한 전시입니다. 전시 수익금의 일부는 아티스트 릴리프(Artist Relief)에 기부될 예정입니다. 아티스트 릴리프는 23개의 대형기관이 운영하는 프로젝트로, 경제적 어려움을 겪는 예술가들을 지원합니다.

어떤 전시?
“가브리엘 리코의 ‘공식’은 구체적인 무언가를 만들고, 해결하고, 성취하는 단순명료한 표현이라 할 수 있습니다. 그래서 상징과 규칙으로 가득한 문제를 해결하고 수행하는 데에 도움을 줍니다. 수학 공식과 리코 공식의 가장 큰 차이점은, 가브리엘 리코의 상징이 ‘물체’라는 것이죠. 그들 자체로도 충분한, 그런 가치로 가득한 물체들 말이에요…
… 프랑스 포스트-구조주의로 인해 현대에는 ‘해석’의 문제가 만연해 있습니다. 너무나 많은 것들이 어둡고 해독불가한 곳에서 꺼내어 해석되어지기를 기다리고 있죠. 어쨌거나, 이러한 구조에 도전하는 올바른 질문들이 나타나게 마련입니다. 일반적이지 않은 관점으로부터 생겨나, 물체에 독특한 의미를 부여하는 질문들이 생겨나게 되는 거죠. 이번 전시는 바로 가브리엘 리코가 던지는 질문입니다.”
볼만 한 이유는?
스스로를 “체험적 방법론을 취하는 존재론자”라고 칭하는 가브리엘 리코는 자신이 발명한 시스템에 따라 물체들을 재미있게 병치합니다. 리코는 박제된 동물을 작업에 즐겨 사용하며 동물들이 마치 살아있는 것처럼 착각하게 만듭니다.
작가가 물체를 모아 놓은 방식은 한눈에 이해하기 어렵기 때문에, 자세히 살펴보아야 합니다. <통일성과 획일성(Unity & Uniformity (La Mitla de hérétiques))>이라는 작품에서는, 도금된 깃털들이 일정한 간격으로 벽에 붙어있는데, 복제품 사이에 단 두 개만 진짜 깃털입니다.

아트넷 뉴스에서는 매주 볼만 한 전시를 추천하고 있는데요, 특히 온라인 전시가 많아지고 있어 흥미로운 가상 전시도 소개하고 있습니다. 또 세계 각지의 갤러리들이 하나 둘 다시 문을 열고 있어 전시 소식이 많이 들리고 있습니다. 이번에는 혼자 알기 아까운 두 개의 전시를 구독자분들께 소개합니다. ≪르네상스 느와르 Renaissance Noir≫는 열두 명의 아프리카계 미국인 작가들의 작품을 아우른 가상 전시입니다. ≪가브리엘 리코: 자연은 숨는 걸 좋아해 Gabriel Rico: Nature Loves to Hide≫는 파리의 페로탕 갤러리에서 열리고 있는 전시로, 멕시코 작가 가브리엘 리코의 뼈 있는 유머가 담긴 설치 작품들이 전시됩니다. 실제로 보는 것만 못해도, 집에서 사진으로나마 해외 전시를 구경할 수 있어 좋네요. 이번에도 온라인으로 열리는 아트바젤(Art Basel) 역시 26일까지 온라인 뷰잉룸을 통해 집에서 둘러보실 수 있습니다!
