안녕
你好! Hello! My name is Liuba. I am Russian and hail from picturesque, but freezing cold Siberian city of Irkutsk near Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake on Earth. My family and I are Buryat, and indigenous group of Mongolian people. In 2007, participating in an exchange program of my university I tool the chance to study for more than a year in northern China. During my studies I visited Beijing and fell in love with the friendly people, history, architectures, vastness, cozy chaos, convenience, abundance of amazing parks… and I thought, “Why not live hear?!”
니하오! 헬로우! 안녕! 내 이름은 리우바, 러시아인, 그림같이 아름답지만 살벌하게 추운 시베리아의 한 도시 이르쿠츠크에서 태어났습니다. 이곳은 지구상에서 가장 오래되고 깊은 바이칼 호수 근처에 위치해있습니다. 우리 가족은 토착 몽고인인 부랴트族입니다. 나는 2007년에 대학교 교환학생 프로그램의 일환으로 중국 동북지방에서 일년 좀 넘게 공부할 기회가 있었습니다. 이 기간 동안 베이징을 방문했고 다정한 사람들, 역사, 건축물, 웅장함, 포근한 혼돈, 편리함, 엄청나게 많은 공원들에 반해버렸습니다… 그리고는 생각했죠. “나 여기 살면 안될까?!”
After completing my studies, I tool a leap of faith, moved Beijing and have been living here for many years. I’ve heard that only if you’ve lived in New York City for ten years, can you call yourself a New Yorker. Following this logic, I’ve earned my titled of true Beijinger.
공부를 마친 후에, 나는 강한 믿음을 가지고 베이징으로 이주하였으며 현재까지 수년 간 살아오고 있습니다. 뉴욕에 10년 동안 살면 뉴요커(New Yorker)라고 불릴 수 있다는 논리대로, 나는 진정한 ‘베이징사람(Beijinger)’이라는 타이틀을 획득하였습니다.
People overseas used to associate the capital of China with heavy smog lasting for days, but there is so much more about this megalopolis and its inhabitants. Plus, the air quality had drastically improved over the past years. Days of heavy smog are over and I want to proudly introduce the colorful city I’ve come to know and love instead of the grey Beijing as portrayed.
중국 밖 사람들은 오랫동안 대륙의 수도인 베이징을 심각한 스모그와 연관지어 생각해왔습니다. 그러나 그 외에도 이 대도시와 이 거주민들에 대해 훨씬 더 많은 사실들이 있습니다. 게다가 최근 몇 년 동안 공기질이 획기적으로 개선되었습니다. 두터운 스모그의 나날들은 지나가고 이제는 회색 도시로 묘사되던 베이징 대신에 내가 사랑에 빠진 다채로운 도시라고 당당히 소개하고 싶습니다.
Beijing is always evolving and developing, something I try to take record of in my drawings. In this book you will not find glossy photos of attractions with opening hours and addresses, but rather illustrations and little stories of impressions, adventures and experiences of my time spent in Beijing. This city and I grew and developed together as partners, reflected by the different levels of skill in the illustrations in the following pages. Beijing and I try new things and learn that not everything would work out perfectly. We make mistakes, fall flat on our faces, get back up again, hope to do better in the future and eventually succeed in doing just that. We are both messy at times, but also charming. You might not like us at first, but give us a chance and you won’t regret it.
베이징은 계속 진화하고 발전 중이며, 내 그림 속에 기록해놓으려고 노력합니다. 이 책에서는 광택나는 멋들어진 사진들과 상점 운영시간이나 주소 등은 없습니다. 내가 베이징에서 지내온 시간들의 경험, 모험, 감동의 작은 이야기들과 삽화들이 담겨져있을 뿐입니다. 이 도시와 나는 파트너로서 함께 성장해왔습니다. 책의 각 페이지마다 그림 실력이 다른 것이 그 증거입니다. 베이징과 나는 새로움을 추구하며 모든 것이 완벽할 수는 없음을 배웠습니다. 우리는 실수와 실패를 경험하기도 하며 다시 일어나 미래에는 더 잘할 거라는 희망도 가져보며, 우연히 성공하기도 합니다. 우리는 때때로 엉망이 되지만 동시에 매력도 넘칩니다. 어쩌면 처음에는 우리를 좋아하지 않을 수도 있습니다만, 우리에게 기회를 준다면 절대 후회하지 않을 것입니다.

My husband and I arrived in Beijing with only two suitcases. Through the years we moved around quite a bit, living in at least five different apartments.
남편과 나는 여행용 캐리어 두 개만 달랑 들고 베이징에 도착했습니다. 수 년동안 우리는 꽤 자주 이사를 다니며 적어도 다섯 곳의 아파트에 거주했습니다.
A housing estate we lived in looked just like this. Our neighbor was also raising doves. I did enjoy the soothing sounds of doves cooing while I was painting, however the droppings on my windows was a less romantic state of affairs.
우리가 살았던 아파트 단지는 이 그림과 비슷합니다. 이웃들은 비둘기를 키웠습니다. 나는비둘기가 구구거거리며 위로하는 듯한 소리를 들으며 그림 그리는 것을 즐겼습니다. 하지만 우리집 창문에 떨어진 비둘기똥은 그리 낭만적인 일은 아니었습니다.
We’ve accumulated so much stuff over the years, the truck was full to the brim the last time we moved. I blame Totoro’s lavish lifestyle.
우리는 몇 년 지난 후에 짐이 정말 많아져서 마지막 이사할 때는 이사트럭 가장가리까지 꽉 차버렸습니다. 이건 모두 고양이 토토로의 호화스러운 생활방식 때문입니다.

Many housing estates in Beijing offer outdoor public gym equipment where older residents like to exercise to stay active and healthy, but also to hang out, relax, play games, and obviously exchange the latest gossip.
베이징의 거주 단지들은 대부분 야외 공용 체육시설을 포함하고 있어서 노년층들이 활동적이고 건강한 삶을 유지하고 운동하는 것을 좋아합니다. 더불어 산책, 휴식, 게임 등도 즐기며 최근 소문들을 주고받기도 합니다.
Daily, my closest neighbor would be hanging out at our unit’s entrance ready to greet me with a new line to strike up a conversation and share some small talk.
우리집 가장 가까운 이웃은 매일 아파트 현관 입구에 나와서, 대화를 시작하며 간단한 이야기를 나누려고 새로운 문구로 나에게 인사를 건넬 준비를 합니다.
Yep, he likes to wear cowboy hats, because he is cool like that..
네, 그는 카우보이 모자를 즐겨 쓰는데, 그렇게 멋있기 때문입니다.
回家了？ [huí jiā le] Back home? 집에 돌아왔니?
冷不冷？ [lěng bù lěng] Don’t you think it’s cold out? 밖에 춥니?
走了？ [zŏu le] Leaving? 외출하니?
吃了吗？ [chī le ma] Can be translated as “Have you eaten?”. 밥 먹었니?
My neighbor isn’t inviting me to a meal, in fact he isn’t really interested to know if I have eaten or not. Turns out this is traditional way of greeting each other. Nowadays this phrase is predominantly used by the older generation and only among people who have a close relationship.
이웃은 나를 식사에 초대하려는 것이 아니며 사실 내가 밥을 먹었는지 아닌지 관심도 없습니다. 이 문구는 서로의 안부를 묻는 전통적인 방식입니다. 요즘에 이 문구는 나이든 세대 또는 가까운 사이에서만 주로 사용됩니다.

대륙의 웅장한 역사 관광지들도 좋지만 정겨운 골목 모습이 참 좋다. 마지막 그림은 정말 '전형적인' 베이징 거주 단지의 모습이다. 시내 중심부로 갈수록 더 많이 볼 수 있는데 노인분들이 항상 활기차게 운동하거나 사교생활 즐기는 모습이 참 좋아보인다. 중국에 와서 놀란 점 중 하나가 허리 굽고 다리 휜 어르신들을 거의 볼 수 없다는 것! 그림 맨 위 카이당쿠(开裆裤) 입은 아기 궁둥이가 시선을 사로잡는다 ^^ 중국 처음 왔을 때 내가 가장 문화충격을 받은 것 중 하나 - 어린 아이들에게 세로로 쫙 개방된 바지를 입혀서 배변 훈련 쉽게 하기 위한 것인데, 더울 때나 추울 때나 어디서나 자주 마주쳤다. 북경에 온 후 거의 못 봤는데, 대도시라 그런지 아니면 중국사람들도 인식이 달라지고 있어서인지 모르겠다.
베이징 도심에는 작고 큰 공원이 꽤 많고, 공원 안에는 어디나 운동 기구가 자리잡고 있다.
