Walking through the hutongs you will notice the hulu, bottle gourd, calabash, squash, long melon, or whatever you choose to call them, hanging around. Hulu hold a very special place in Chinese culture. As each hulu contains a large amount of seeds, can sprout many vines and grow fast, hulu are the symbol of fertility, a large family with many children.
후통 골목을 걷다보면 조롱박을 주변에서 쉽게 볼 수 있습니다. 조롱박, 호리병박, 박 등 지칭하는 말은 다양합니다. 조롱박은 중국 문화에서 매우 특별한 위치를 차지합니다. 각 조롱박은 많은 양의 씨앗을 품고, 수많은 줄기가 뻗어나오며 아주 빨리 자라기 때문에, 풍요와 다산의 상징으로 여겨집니다.
葫芦 [hú lu] sounds like 福禄 [fú lù] and this is why it also represents wealth, longevity and prosperity. In ancient times bottle gourds were used to store medicine. Therefore, it’s believed the calabash wards off disease and evil. Hang hulu on each side of the bed to ensure great health. Taoist monks used gourds to trap bad spirits. That is why in Fengshui the hulu absorb negative Qi-energy.
조롱박을 뜻하는 葫芦의 발음인 “후루”는, 행복, 번영, 장수를 뜻하는 福禄의 발음과 같습니다. 고대 시대에 조롱박은 약을 저장하는 용도로 사용되었기에, 질병과 악을 물리친다고 여겨졌습니다. 침대 옆에 조롱박을 매달아두면 건강을 지켜준다고 믿었습니다. 도교의 수도승들은 나쁜 기운을 조롱박 속에 가두었으며, 풍수지리에서 조롱박은 부정적인 기운(氣)을 흡수한다고 전해집니다.

Hulu smaller than 8cm are called “hand rubbing gourds” 手捻葫芦 [shou niǎn hú lu]. The smaller and more symmetric, the more expensive. Rubbing gourds is considered good exercise for mind and body. It helps massage acupuncture points to improve blood flow and is used as a tool for meditation. If you rub it daily, the hulu will turn red within a year or so because it absorbs skin oil and sweat.
8센티미터 이하의 작은 조롱박은 “손으로 문지르는 조롱박”이라는 뜻의 “手捻葫芦(쇼녠후루)”라고 불립니다. 작을수록 더 균형 잡히고 더 가치가 있습니다다. 조롱박을 문지르면 심신에 좋은 운동이 된다고 합니다. 혈액 순환을 원활하게 하는 지점을 마사지해주어서 의학 도구로 사용되기도 합니다. 매일 문지르면 일년 안에 조롱박이 붉게 변하는데, 이는 피부의 유분과 땀을 흡수해서 그렇게 되는 것입니다.
If you still haven’t fallen in love with hulu, there is a piece of Chinese pop-culture that could help. In the 1980s and animated show called 葫芦兄弟 [hú lu xiōng dì] Calabash Brothers was wildly popular. The show is about 7 brothers born out of a magical Hulu seed, one for each rainbow color with special powers. The wacky theme song pops into my head all the time. They have the ability to morph into one Diamond brother, similar to the Power Rangers.
