06. 후통의 수다, 의자, 배추와 재물
People live close to each other and the sense of community is very strong here. Everyone knows one another and loves to strike up a conversation. Wandering through the hutongs I notice the older generation enjoying their daily walks and having a rest on the random chairs scattered along the alleys. These often improvised, crooked, lopsided chairs appear to have a longer life than the group of old friends sitting on them, discussing trivial topics like the current price of Chinese cabbage.
이곳 후통에서 사람들은 서로 가까이에 살며 공동체 의식이 매우 강합니다. 모든 사람들이 서로를 잘 알며 대화하는 것을 좋아합니다. 후통을 어슬렁거리다보면, 나는 노인들이 산책을 즐기며 골목 따라 아무렇게나 놓여진 의자에서 휴식을 즐기는 모습을 봅니다. 즉흥적이고 비뚤어지고 한쪽이 기울어진 의자들은 거기에 앉아서 지금 배추 가격이 얼마인지 등의 소소한 이야기를 나누고 있는 오래된 친구들보다 더 긴 삶을 살아온 것 같습니다.

배추
Piles of outside stored Chinese cabbage just before the cold winter arrives in November is an annual tradition. Before, when people did not have refrigerators, the hoarding of these popular greens was a necessity to survive the harsh winters in the north. Locals claims the longer you store them, the sweeter they will be! Some still store the cabbage outside out of habit and nostalgia for simpler times.
집 밖에 쌓여있는 배추 더미는 11월 경에 겨울이 다가왔음을 알리는 연례 전통입니다. 냉장고도 없던 예전에는 녹색 아채를 비축해두는 것이 북방의 혹독한 겨울을 보내는데 필수적이었습니다. 북경 사람들 말로는, 배추를 오래 보관할수록 단맛이 더 진해진다고 합니다. 현재에도 집밖에 배추를 쌓아두는 사람들이 있는데 더 단순했던 그 시절에 대한 향수를 느낄 수 있습니다.
Strangely, restaurants and other businesses have statues of cabbages on display to attract more wealth. The Chinese word 白菜 [bái cài] sounds like 百财 [bǎi cái] – numerous wealth. The statues are made of resin, porcelain, ceramic and jade, etc.
이상하게도 식당이나 회사들은 더 많은 부를 갈망하며 배추 동상을 세워놓습니다. 중국어로 배추(白菜)는 “바이차이”로 발음하는데, 이는 많은 부를 의미하는 百财 단어와 발음이 같습니다. 배추 동상은 수지, 도자기, 옥 등으로 만들어졌습니다.
Handan city, in Hebei province (about 400km outside of Beijing), boasts a giant cabbage statue as 20 meters high weighing 12 tons.
베이징에서 400킬로미터 떨어진 허베이성 한단시(河北省 邯郸市)에는 높이가 20미터, 무게가 12톤이나 되는 거대한 배추 동상이 있습니다.

비가 추적추적 오던 어느 11월, 난츠즈(南池子) 거리를 걷다 발견한 풍경. 11월이면 김장을 담그는 우리나라 풍습과 맞닿아있는 공통 분모인 '배추'가 참으로 정겨웠다.
