风筝 [fēng zheng] kite
Kites were invented in China. At first, made of wood and cloth, kites were used for military purposes to measure distance, collect wind information and as communication devices transmitting secret messages. Certain designs allowed kites to produce intense sounds when up in the air to terrify the enemy. These days kites of all shapes, sizes and colors are flown for leisure, even in a city like Beijing with a busy skyline of tall buildings.
연은 중국에서 발명되었습니다. 처음에는 나무와 천으로 만들어졌고, 거리 측정, 바람 정보 수집, 비밀 메시지 전달하는 커뮤니케이션 도구 등의 목적으로 군사적 용도로 사용되었습니다. 특정한 모양의 연은 적을 겁주기 위해 공중에서 강렬한 소리를 내기도 했습니다. 오늘날에는 베이징 같은 도시의 고층빌딩의 스카이라인과 더불어, 모든 형태, 크기, 색깔의 연들이 취미용으로 날려지고 있습니다.
鱼 [yú] fish
Because the word sounds like 余 [yú] surplus, fish symbolize good luck and fortune. According to one of the Chinese myths dragons start life out as a carp.

蝙蝠 [biān fú] bat
The word 蝠 [fú] (bat) sounds like 福 [fú] (fortune), and that is why bats are considered a lucky sign, especially in the color red. These flying mammals are often painted in five to symbolize the "Five Blessings" : longevity, wealth, health, virtue and peaceful death.
