1-2 

우리는 첫날부터 거기 있으면서, 그 모든 것을 받아들였습니다. 우리는 그 모든 것을 두 귀로 듣고, 두 눈으로 보고, 두 손으로 확인했습니다. 

From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in - we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands.

생명의 말씀이 우리 눈앞에 나타나셨습니다. 우리는 그것을 똑똑히 보았습니다! 

The Word of Live appeard right before our eyes; we saw it happen!

이제 우리가 목격한 것을 여러분에게 과장 없이 있는 그대로 말씀드리겠습니다. 

And now we're telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this:

너무나 놀랍게도, 하나님 자신의 무한하신 생명이 우리 앞에 모습을 드러냈습니다.

The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us.

   

3-4 

우리가 그것을 보고 듣고서 이제 여러분에게 전하는 것은, 우리와 더불어 여러분도 아버지와 그분의 아들이신 예수 그리스도와 사귐을 경험하게 하려는 것입니다. 

We saw it, we heard it, and now we're telling you so you can experience it along with us, this expreience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. 

우리가 이 편지를 쓰는 목적은, 여러분도 이 사귐을 누리게 하려는 것입니다. 

Our motive for writing is simply this: 

그러면 여러분의 기쁨으로 인해 우리의 기쁨이 두 배가 될 테니까요!

We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy!

빛 가운데로 걸어가십시오 | Walk in the Light

우리가 그리스도에게서 듣고 여러분에게 전하는 메시지의 핵심은 이것입니다. 

This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: 

하나님은 빛, 순전한 빛이십니다. 그분 안에는 어둠의 흔적조차 없습니다.

6-7 

우리가 하나님과 함께하는 삶을 경험한다고 주장하면서 어둠 속에서 넘어지기를 반복한다면, 우리는 뻔뻔스러운 거짓말을 하는 것이 분명하며 자신의 말대로 살지 않은 것입니다. 

If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we're obviously lying through our teeth - we're not living what we claim.

그러나 하나님은 빛이시니, 우리가 그 빛 가운데로 걸어가면 우리는 서로 함께하는 삶을 경험하게 되고, 하나님의 아들이신 예수께서 흘리신 희생의 피가 우리의 모든 죄를 깨끗게 해 줄 것입니다.

But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God's Son, purges all our sin.

8-10 

우리가 죄 없다고 주장하면, 우리는 스스로를 속이는 것입니다. 그 같은 주장은 터무니없이 잘못된 생각입니다. 

If we claim that we're free of sin, we're only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense.

그러나 우리가 우리 죄를 인정하고 남김없이 고백하면, 그분은 진실하신 분이시니 우리를 저버리지 않으실 것입니다. 그분께서 우리 죄를 용서해 주시고, 우리의 모든 잘못을 깨끗게 해 주실 것입니다. 

On the other hand, if we admit our sins - simply come clean about them - he won't let us down' he'll be true to himself. He'll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing.

우리가 죄지은 적이 한 번도 없다고 주장하면, 우리는 하나님을 철저하게 부인하고 그분을 거짓말쟁이로 만드는 것입니다. 

If we claim that we've never sinned, we out-and-out contradict God - make a liar out of him. 

그 같은 주장은, 우리가 하나님을 알지 못한다는 것을 드러낼 뿐입니다.

A claim like that only shows off our ignorance of God.
