Walking Shadow
이야고 이런 멋지군. Blessed pudding!
오델로 이건 올바르고 정직한 손이야. ’Tis a good hand, a frank one.
이야고 예의가 참 바르네. An excellent courtesy!
오델로 덕이 있는 곳에서는 이런 것들이 더욱 덕스럽게 여겨지기 마련이지. Where virtue is, these are more virtuous.
이야고 피가 흘러. I bleed.
오델로 이게 내가 사용하는 유일한 마법이지. This only is the witchcraft I have.
이야고 난 큰 위험에 처해 있는 거군. There stand I in much peril.
오델로 너의 준비되지 않은 영혼을 죽이지는 않을 테니까. I would not kill thy unprepared spirit.
이야고 너는 자신의 맹목적인 욕망에 대해 좋은 핑계를 찾았구나. And laid good ’scuse upon your ecstasy.
오델로 뭐, 뭐라고? That! what?
이야고 네가 나를 탓하는 건 정당하지만, 분명히 말하건대 나는 너의 문제에 대해 제대로 처신했어. Thou hast taken against me a most just exception; but yet, I protest, I have dealt most directly in thy affair.
오델로 나를 놀리는 거야? Dost thou mock me?
이야고 그동안 내가 두려움에 사로잡혀 있었다는 걸 알아줘. 내가 두려워해야 할 만한 이유가 있기는 했지만. In the mean time, let me be thought too busy in my fears— as worthy cause I have to fear I am.
오델로 무슨 말이야? What dost thou think?
이야고 중요한 용건에 대해 너에게 말하고 싶어. I would on great occasion speak with you.
오델로 무슨 애기인데? What is the news?
이야고 이제 나도 너에 대한 애정과 충성심으로 솔직해져야 할 때인 것 같아. 그러니 그것을 내 진심으로 받아들여줘. For now I shall have reason to show the love and duty that I bear you with franker spirit: therefore, as I am bound, receive it from me.
오델로 말해 봐. 내게 알려 줘. Fetch’t, let me see’t.
이야고 오명과 강력한 정황이 진실의 문으로 직접 인도하는 것에 네가 만족한다면, 내가 말해줄 께. But yet, I say, if imputation and strong circumstances, which lead directly to the door of truth, will give you satisfaction, you may have’t.
오델로 그래, 뭐든지. Why, anything.
이야고 (숨을 크게 들이쉬더니 최대한 있는 힘껏 소리를 지르며) 오, 사악한 놈! 매우 수다스러운 사기꾼. 엉뚱하고 교활한 사기꾼, 기회주의자, 악마 같은 사기꾼. 디아블로. 오, 배신하는 악당들! 오, 살인자 노예! 오, 악당! 오, 유명한 창녀! 악랄한 창녀! 쓰레기. O villainous! a knave very voluble. a slipper and subtle knave, a finder of occasions, a devilish knave. a pestilent complete knave. Diablo. O treacherous villains! O murderous slave! O villain! O notable strumpet! Villainous whore! Filth.
오델로가 절망하며 바닥에 쓰러진다.
오델로 그것이 원인이야. 그것 때문이야. 내 영혼이여. It is the cause, it is the cause, my soul.
이야고 효과가 있군. 내 약이 효과가 있어. Work on, My medicine, work!
오델로 아, 견딜 수가 없구나. O insupportable!
이야고 그럼 한 밤중에 번화한 도시에서 갑자기 불이 났을 때처럼 겁에 질려서 비명이라도 지르던지. Do, with like timorous accent and dire yell as when, by night and negligence, the fire is pied in populous cities.
데스데모나 (오델로를 부축하며) 이 사람은 너의 악의에 시달리고 있어. A man that languishes in your displeasure.
이야고 하늘이 판단해 줄 거야. Heaven is my judge.
오델로 부탁이니 제발 잠시라도 나를 혼자 있게 해 줘. Whereon, I do beseech thee, grant me this, to leave me but a little to myself.
데스데모나 어린애를 가르치려면 우선 쉽고 간단한 것부터 가르치는 법인데. Those that do teach young babes Do it with gentle means and easy tasks.
이야고 우리 모두가 스승이 될 수도 없고, 모든 스승이 진정으로 존경을 받을 수도 없는 법이지. We cannot all be masters, nor all masters cannot be truly follow’d.
오델로 어쩌다 이렇게 되었을까? How comes it?
이야고 내게 물어볼 거 없어. 너도 네 자신이 알고 있다는 걸 알잖아. Demand me nothing: what you know, you know.
오델로 아니야. No.
이야고 바로 네가 원하는 대로 된 거지. ’Tis done at your request.
오델로 절대 그렇지 않아. Never.
이야고 이건 오직 너에 대한 일이야. 다른 누구도 상관없어. If it touch not you, it comes near nobody.
오델로 저리 가. Be gone!
이야고 나는 너에게 여러 번 말했어. 나는 진심이기에 다시 거듭해서 말하는 것뿐이야. I have told thee often, and I re-tell thee again and again my cause is hearted.
오델로 나를 이렇게 흔드는 건 말이 아니야. It is not words that shake me thus.
이야고 순수한 사람의 가슴에도 잘못된 불안이 파고들어 올바른 생각과 함께 앉아 사람들을 심판하고 있지. Who has a breast so pure, but some uncleanly apprehensions keep leets and law-days and in session sit with meditations lawful?
오델로 나는 내 사랑의 전 과정을 꾸밈없이 전하고 싶어. I will a round unvarnish’d tale deliver of my whole course of love.
이야고 그런 사람에게는 전혀 어울리지 않는 열정이군. A passion most unsuiting such a man.
오델로 네가 이 불운한 일을 이야기하게 되면, 나를 있는 그대로 말해줘. When you shall these unlucky deeds relate, speak of me as I am.
이야고 그걸 다시 말해줄까? Will you hear’t again?
오델로 안 돼. 하늘이여 막아주소서. No; heaven forfend!
갑자기 오델로, 데스데모나, 이야고 모두 관객들을 쳐다본다. 세 사람은 계속 관객들을 바라보며 서로 대화한다.
데스데모나 세상에. Alas!
오델로 저게 무슨 나팔 소리지? What trumpet is that same?
이야고 누가 종을 울리는 거야? Who’s that which rings the bell?
오델로 저 무시무시한 종소리를 멈춰. Silence that dreadful bell.
이야고 고함소리 못 들었어? Did not you hear a cry?
오델로 마음이 불안해. My mind misgives.
데스데모나 갑자기 무슨 일이지? How now?
이야고 (무대를 뒷편을 살피다가 돌아와서) 칼이 부딪히고 바닥에 떨어지는 소리가 들려서 다시 돌아왔어. And I return’d the rather for that I heard the clink and fall of swords.
오델로 의심하기 전에 직접 봐야겠다. I’ll see before I doubt.
이야고 이 악당들이 어디 있는 거지? Where be these bloody thieves?
오델로 무슨 일인지 단서를 찾아봐야겠어. I’ll smell it on the tree.
이야고 잠시 이곳에서 떨어져 있어. 조용히 참고 기다려 봐. Stand you awhile apart; Confine yourself but in a patient list.
오델로 세상에, 어째서 지금, 하아. 이런 일이 왜 생기는 거지? Why, how now, ho! From whence ariseth this?
이야고 어떤 악한들이 이런 짓을 저지른 걸까? What villains have done this?
데스데모나 대체 무슨 일이지? And what’s the news.
오델로 봐. 내게 무기가 있어. 이보다 훌륭한 무기는 지금까지 어떤 병사도 차본 적이 없을 거야. Behold, I have a weapon; A better never did itself sustain upon a soldier’s thigh.
이야고 그렇지만 신중해야 해. 아직 우리가 뭘 확실히 본 건 아니니까. Nay, but be wise: yet we see nothing done.
데스데모나 분명히 잘 살펴봐야 해. Faith, that's with watching.
오델로 저기 봐. 불빛들이 다가오고 있어. But, look! what lights come yond?
이야고 악당들! 악당들! 악당들! Thieves! Thieves! Thieves!
데스데모나 이런 건 한 번도 본적이 없어. I ne’er saw this before.
이야고 그들이 서로 치고 받으며 가까이 모이는 것이 보여. I found them close together, at blow and thrust.
오델로 날 떨리게 하는구나. I tremble at it.
이야고 그들의 입술이 너무 가까워서 숨결이 엉킬 정도야. They met so near with their lips that their breaths embraced together.
오델로 (관객들에게) 너희들은 무기를 드는 것보다 인내하는 편이 더 나아. You shall more command with years than with your weapons.
이야고 그리고 지금은 별의 힘에 의해 광기에 사로잡힌 사람들처럼 서로 피를 흘리며 싸우고 있어. And then, but now— as if some planet had unwitted men— swords out, and tilting one at other’s breast, in opposition bloody.
데스데모나 손가락 하나가 아프면 건강한 다른 부위에도 통증이 느껴지기 마련이지. For let our finger ache, and it indues our other healthful members even to that sense of pain.
이야고 도시 전체가 일어나겠어. The town will rise.
오델로 내가 국가를 위해 바친 충정을 그들도 알고 있을 텐데. I have done the state some service, and they know’t.
이야고 (관객들에게) 경고하건대 집으로 돌아가요. I charge you, get you home.
데스데모나 (관객들에게) 나는 나를 낳고 키워주신 여러분에게 빚을 졌어요. 내 삶과 소양 모두가 당신들을 존경하도록 날 이끌어 주죠. To you I am bound for life and education; My life and education both do learn me How to respect you.
이야고 (관객들에게) 저리가요. Away, I say.
데스데모나 (관객들에게) 여러분은 온 세상을 위해서 이런 짓을 하는 건가요? Wouldst thou do such a deed for all the world?
이야고 (관객들에게) 당신들은 또다시 입술에 손가락을 대는군요? Yet again your fingers to your lips?
데스데모나 (관객들에게) 대체 여러분들의 주인은 누구죠? Who is thy lord?
이야고 세상에나. ’Zounds.
오델로 흠! Hum!
이야고 누군가 살인이라고 외치고 있어. Whose noise is this that cries on murder?
데스데모나 나도 들었어. I have heard it said so.
오델로 내 얘기일까? Was that mine?
이야고 아니, -그래. 물론이지. No:—yes, sure.
오델로 사람들이 오델로에게 덤벼드는구나. Man but a rush against Othello’s breast.
데스데모나 내가 당한 명백한 폭력과 불운의 소용돌이가 세상에 알려지겠지. My downright violence and storm of fortunes may trumpet to the world.
이야고 밖으로 나가서 반란이라고 소리쳐. Go out, and cry a mutiny.
오델로 (관객들에게) 너희들의 고발에 답하려면 내가 어디로 가야 할까? Where will you that I go to answer this your charge?
이야고 어디로, 어떻게, 얼마나 자주, 얼마나 오래전에. Where, how, how oft, how long ago.
데스데모나 저들이 말하길 전쟁에서는 최고 지위의 사람이 본을 보여야 한대. Save that, they say, the wars must make examples out of their best.
오델로 아, 비참하구나, 영원히 세상 사람들의 조롱거리가 되고 손가락질을 받으며 살아가야 되다니! But, alas, to make me a fixed figure for the time of scorn to point his slow unmoving finger at!
이야고 공정하고 현명한 자들이 저지르는 그 추악한 짓만큼 어리석고 흉한 것도 없지. There’s none so foul and foolish thereunto, but does foul pranks which fair and wise ones do.
오델로 (관객들에게) 내가 한 번이라도 움직이거나 이 팔을 들어 올리면, 너희들 중 가장 훌륭한 사람조차 내 힐책에 쓰러질 텐데. If I once stir, or do but lift this arm, the best of you shall sink in my rebuke.
이야고 헛수고야. Save you your labor.
오델로 (자신의 손에 키스하며) 그들의 쾌락의 도구에 키스하겠어. I kiss the instrument of their pleasures.
데스데모나 그건 내 생명을 저버린 손이니까. For ’twas that hand that gave away my heart.
오델로 이 손은 이제 멈췄어. These hands have newly stopp’d.
이야고 정말 그렇게 생각해? Will you think so?
