느낌은 중요한 지식을 운반하는 정보 전달의 역할을 맡는다. 그리고 그뿐만 아니라, 정보에 따라 우리가 행동할 수 있도록 욕구와 동기를 제공한다.

The sensory maps and images that are part of elaborate feelings incorporate in the ongoing mental flow facts regarding the state of the organisms's interior. This informational role is a primary contribution of feelings, but feelings have another role to play: they provide the urge and the incentive to behave according to the information they carry and do what is most appropriate for the current situation. 정보적 역할(informational role)은 느낌의 주된 기여이다. 느낌은 감각 지도와 이미지들이 정교하게 결합된 형태로, 유기체 내부 상태에 관한 사실들을 지속적인 마음의 흐름에 통합시킨다. 느낌에는 또 다른 역할도 있다. 느낌은 우리가 느낌이 전달하는 정보에 따라 행동하고, 현재 상황에 가장 적절한 행동을 하도록 욕구와 동기를 제공한다.

Feelings reflect a chemical regulatory process, the initial condition without shich they could not occur, but another condition must be met, and that is a dialogue between body chemistry and the bioelectrical activity of neurons in a nervous system. Regulatory chemical molecules ignite the feeling process but cannot complete it alone.(p.86)
느낌은 화학적 조절 과정을 반영하며, 화학적 조절 과정이라는 초기 조건이 없으면 발생할 수 없다. 하지만 느낌이 발생하려면 이 외에도 또 다른 조건이 만족돼야 한다. 몸의 화학적 활동과 신경계 내 뉴런들의 생물전기적 활동 사이의 대화가 바로 그 조건이다. 화학분자들의 활동은 느낌이라는 과정에 불을 붙일 수는 있지만, 그 활동만으로는 느낌을 출현시킬 수 없다.
