뮤지컬 영화, '틱틱붐'의 초반부에 이런 노래가 나온다. 뉴욕의 가난한 파트 타이머로 삶이 어떤지를 보여주는 노래. 그러나 비관적이지 않고 유쾌하게 술잔을 들고 노래한다. 뮤지컬 작가의 삶은 원래 이런 걸까.
주인공 조너선 라슨은 직접 작곡, 작사를 하며 '틱틱붐'의 뮤지컬에 배우로 출연한다. 재밌게도 이 영화를 만든 감독 또한 마찬가지도. 해밀턴이라는 뮤지컬의 극본, 작곡, 작사, 그리고 알렉산더 해밀턴 역 초연까지 했던 사람이다. 그 이후로도 뮤지컬과 영화를 오가면서 배우와 작사, 작곡을 하고 있다. 어쩌면 주인공을 가장 이해할 수 있는 감독이 그를 위한 영화를 만들었다고 볼 수 있지 않을까. 원래 뮤지컬을 하던 가락이 있어서 그런지 영화의 구성이 참 흥미롭게 전개된다.
영화를 보면서 초반부에 나오는 노래 중 이 곡이 제일 기억에 남는다. 다른 노래들은 서른이란 나이에 담긴 우울함이 한 스푼씩 섞여있다. 이 노래 또한 마찬가지다. 근데 유쾌함이 더 많이 들어가 있다. 화장실에 전구가 나가면 어떡하지 고민하고, 주방에서 씻으면서 비누가 남았나 걱정한다. 배가 가라앉고 있으니 술 한잔 하자면서 노래한다. 그래, 이게 인생이라면서 말이다.
뭐가 어찌 되더라도 친구들과 함께 술 마시며 놀 수만 있다면 그걸로 만족할 수 있지 않을까 싶다. 이 노래 말대로 그게 인생이니까. 이 노래가 자꾸 떠오르는 다른 이유는 그냥 재밌어서 그렇다. 라임을 맞춰서 넣은 부분이 계속 귓가에 맴돈다. 그리고 보보 거리는 후렴구도.
