College Major and Career Path
어떤 대학 전공은 특정 커리어 진로로 바로 연결됩니다. 의대 진학을 목표로 생물학을 전공하고, 이후 의대에 진학하고 졸업하면 의사가 되는 경우가 바로 그런 경우입니다. 약학, 간호학, 보건학,... 같은 의료 및 건강 산업의 대부분의 분야가 대부분 이와 같이 전공과 커리어가 직접적인 연결관계를 가지고 있습니다. 변호사, 교수 및 연구 과학자도 대부분 이 범주에 속하지만 이 경우들은 대학 전공이 반드시 직업을 결정하지 않을 수도 있습니다.
Some college majors lead directly to a certain career path. If you major in biology to go to medical school, and you attend medical school and graduate, you become a doctor. The same is true of most fields within the medical and health industry. Lawyers, professors, and research scientists also fit into this category, for the most part, although their college majors may not necessarily reflect their occupations directly.
이외 다른 전공 대부분의 경우는, 대학에서 공부한 것을 해당 분야의 직업으로 반드시 연결할 필요는 없습니다. 예를 들어, 투자 금융의 세계에서는 경영, 경제, 수학, 영어, 철학, 심리학, 공학, 심지어 음악까지 모든 종류의 다양한 분야를 전공한 분석가를 찾을 수 있습니다. 많은 직종이 전공에 상관없이 4년제 대학 학위만 요구합니다.
For most other majors, what a person studies in college need not lead directly to an occupation within that field of study. For example, in the investment world you'll find analysts who have majored in all kinds of fields such as business, economics, mathematics, English, philosophy, psychology, engineering, and even music. Many occupations only require that a candidate have a four year college degree, regardless of major.
이런 사실을 많은 학생들과 심지어 부모들도 모르기 때문에, 대학과 전공을 결정하는 과정에서 불필요한 스트레스와 압박감에 시달리게 됩니다. 대학 전공과 개인의 최종 진로 선택을 반드시 연결 짓지 않아도 됩니다. This is a fact that many students, and even parents, are not aware of, resulting in unnecessary stress and pressure. College major does not need to be directly related to a person's eventual career choice. I can already hear some of you thinking: "In that case, wasn't the college degree a waste of time and money?" No, not necessarily. If a student studied psychology and ended up in the financial sector as a successful financial analyst, was the college major a waste? It enabled the person to get the financial analyst position. In that position, the person will have insight into human psychology that could be useful to her own professional and even personal development. What we learn in college can be used in ways we cannot imagine, and it doesn't have to lead to monetary payback.
또 다른 흔한 문제는 많은 학생과 학부모가 특정 교육이 어떻게 사용될 수 있는지 범위를 모른다는 것입니다. 미술을 전공하면 가난해진다는 말을 자주 듣습니다. 누군가가 미술을 공부하고 싶다고 할 때 흔히 듣는 대답은 "그림 팔아서 생계를 꾸릴 수는 없다."입니다. 그러나 대부분의 예술가는 자신의 작품을 팔아 생계를 유지하지 않습니다. 수많은 아티스트들이 회사에서 디자이너, 웹사이트 제작자, 사진작가, 비디오 편집자, 광고 및 마케팅 전문가, 심지어 비즈니스 운영자로 일합니다. 제가 아는 일부 아티스트들은 자신의 사업을 통해 웬만한 의사들보다 더 큰 수익을 만듭니다.
The other common issue is that many students and parents do not know the scope of how a certain education can be used. I often hear people say that you'll be poor if you major in art. The common response when someone wants to study art is, "you can't make a living selling art." However, most artists don't make a living selling their artwork. Artists work in companies as designers, website creators, photographers, video editors, advertising and marketing specialists, and even business owners. Some artists I know have higher revenues from their businesses than many doctors.
한 사람이 받은 대학 전공 교육이 직업 세계에서 다양한 기회로 이어질 수 있으며, 직업에서 전공을 "사용"하지 않는 것은 시간 낭비가 아니라는 점을 이해하는 것이 중요합니다. 중요한 것은 하나님이 주신 타고난 재능과 열정을 발견하고 삶에서 지속적으로 성장 발전시키는 것입니다. 결코 낭비가 아닙니다.
It's important to understand that a person's major in college can lead to many different opportunities in the career world, and not "using" your major in your career is not a waste of time. What's important is that you discover your God-given natural gifts and passions, and develop them in your life. That's never a waste.
