매년 저는 11학년 - 한국의 고2에 해당하는 학년 - 학생들이 지원할 대학 리스트를 작성하는 것을 도와줍니다. 대부분의 미국 고등학생들은 자신의 지원 대학 리스트가 '안전학교', '목표학교', 그리고 '도전학교' 세 가지 수준 학교를 포함해야 한다는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 안전학교는 100% 합격이 가능할 것으로 예상되는 대학교이며, 목표학교는 학생의 학점과 SAT/ACT 시험 점수가 그 대학교 입학 평균 범위 내에 있지만, 100% 합격할 것이라고는 보장할 수 없는 대학입니다. 도전학교는 학생의 학점과 SAT/ACT 점수가 그 대학교 입학 평균에 미치지 못하지만 선망하는 명문 학교니까 한 번 지원해 보는 대학교입니다. 지원대학 리스트를 만드는 작업은 언뜻 생각하면 단순하고 쉬울 것 같지만, 실제로 세 가지 수준의 학교를 현명하게 현실적으로 판단하여 지원 대학 리스트를 작성하기는 만만한 일이 아닙니다. 학생들이 저지르는 가장 큰 실수는, 자신의 지원 리스트에 충분한 안전학교를 넣지 않는 것입니다. 때때로 안전학교를 하나도 넣지 않는 경우도 발생합니다! 이는 대학교에 진학하지 못할 위험을 초래할 수 있는 매우 위험한 판단입니다.

Every year, I help juniors create their college lists. Most students have heard that there are three categories of colleges they should include in their lists: safety, target, and reach. Safety schools are those that the student thinks she will get accepted to with 100% certainty. Target schools are not 100%, but the student's GPA and SAT/ACT test scores are within the average range for those schools. Reach schools are those that have average GPA and SAT/ACT scores that are above the student's. While this may sound simple enough, the practical application of this is not so clear. Consequently, the biggest mistake that I see students make every year is not having enough safety schools on their lists. Sometimes, I don't see any safety schools at all! This is very dangerous because it poses the risk of not getting accepted to any college.

학생들이 안전학교라 생각하고 어떤 학교들을 나열하지만, 그것이 해당학교의 합격 난이도를 과소평가하고 내린 오판인 경우도 있습니다. 자신이 안전 학교로 판단한 학교들이 실은 합격을 보장하는 안전 학교가 아닌 것이지요. 예를 들어, 메릴랜드주에 있는 학생들은 가중 평균 학점이 3.3 이하이고 SAT 점수가 1300 이하인 경우에도 University of Maryland College Park (메릴랜드 대학, 이하 UMD)를 안전학교로 여기는 경우가 많습니다. 그들은 이 학교가 자신이 사는 주의 큰 주립 대학교이기 때문에 무조건 합격시켜 줄 것으로 생각하지만, 현실은 그렇지 않습니다. 메릴랜드 대학 같은 주립 대학들이 점점 더 합격이 어려워지고 있는 추세를 고려해야 합니다. 대학 비용의 지속적인 증가로, 매우 높은 성적과 시험 점수를 받은 학생들이 타주의 사립 대학에 합격해도 UMD와 같은 주립 대학교를 다니는 경제적인 선택을 점점 더 많이 하는 경향이 있습니다. 이러한 추세는 UMD와 같은 인기 주립 대학교들의 평균 입학 GPA와 SAT 점수를 높이는 결과는 낳고 있습니다. 메릴랜드 대학처럼 들어가기 힘들어지고 있는 다른 주립대학의 예로는 UC 버클리, UCLA, UNC 채플 힐, U 미시간 앤 아버, UVA 등이 있습니다.

Though students list certain schools as safety schools, the problem is, they underestimate the difficulty of getting accepted to many of the schools they categorize as a "safety." For example, students in Maryland State often cite University of Maryland College Park as a safety school, even if their weighted GPA is 3.3 and their SAT score is below 1300. They think that they'll get accepted regardless because UMD is a state public school. However, students need to keep in mind that colleges like UMD have become increasingly difficult to get accepted to because of college costs. Due to ever-increasing college costs, many students with very high grades and test scores who get accepted to out of state private schools eventually opt to attend state public schools like UMD because it is much more economical to do so. This trend has resulted in higher GPA and SAT averages for many popular public state colleges like UMD. Other examples are UC Berkeley, UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill, U Michigan Ann Arbor, and UVA.

메릴랜드 주 학생들에게는 UMBC와 Towson University를 안전 대학으로 지원할 것을 권장합니다. 안전학교는 대학 입학에 요구되는 GPA 및 SAT 평균이 지원자의 점수보다 훨씬 낮은 경우에만 진짜 안전학교 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 학생들이 고려해야 할 다른 요인은 입학률입니다. 만약 학생의 GPA 및 SAT 점수가 대학교 입학 평균보다 높더라도, 입학률이 15%인 대학교는 안전학교가 아닙니다. NYU, Boston U, Northwestern, Case Western Reserve와 같은 대학교는 모두 입학률이 낮기 때문에, 어떤 학생에게도 안전학교가 될 수 없습니다. 안전학교는 입학률이 최소한 50% 이상이어야 합니다.

For students in Maryland State, for example, I advise them to also apply to UMBC and Towson University in many cases. Safety schools are only safety schools if the GPA and SAT averages for admitted freshman for the college is much lower than the applying student's. The other factor students must consider is the acceptance rate. Even if a student's GPA and SAT scores are above average for the college, but the college's acceptance rate is only 15%, that is NOT a safety school. Colleges like NYU, Boston U, Northwestern, Case Western Reserve, and many others would never be considered safety schools for any student due to their low acceptance rates. A safety school should have an acceptance rate of at least 50%.

마지막으로, 대학 비용이 중요한 학생들은 학비를 줄일 수 있기 위해 장학금을 받을 가능성이 가장 높은 안전학교를 지원해야 합니다. 따라서 대학교 지원리스트에 최소한 세 개의 진짜 안전학교를 포함시키도록 해야 합니다.

Lastly, for students for whom college cost is a factor, they must understand that the best possibility of getting a big scholarship is through safety schools, so be sure to be include at least three REAL safety schools on your college list.
