Are College Visits Important?

저는 학생들에게 지원하고 싶은 대학을 최대한 많이 방문하라고 조언합니다. 대학을 방문하는 일은 중요하며, 가능하면 한 번 이상 방문하면 더 좋습니다. 대학 입시에서는 "교신 기록"이라는 것이 있습니다. 이는 학생이 대학과 서신이나 대화를 몇 차례나 나누었는지 기록된 것을 말합니다. 학생이 대학과 교신을 오래 하고 빈도가 높을수록 더 유리하게 평가됩니다.

I advise my students to visit colleges they are serious about applying to and attending as many times as possible. Yes, it is important to visit colleges, and it is better to visit them more than once, if possible. In college admissions, there is something called "history of correspondence." It is a student's history of how many times he has corresponded, whether in writing or in person, with the school. The longer and frequent the history of correspondence a student has with the college, the more favorable it is viewed.

대학의 입장에서 생각해 봅시다. 한 학생이 중학교 때부터 꿈꾸던 꿈의 학교라고 주장하면서, 30분 거리에 살면서도 대학을 한 번도 방문한 적이 없다면, 대학은 어떻게 생각할까요? 그냥 게으른 학생이겠지 봐줄까요? 그 대학에 입학하고 싶다는 말이 진심이라고 믿어줄까요? 꼭 가고 싶은 꿈의 학교를 어떻게 한 번도 가보지 않을 수 있지 의심하지 않을까요?

Think about this from the college's perspective. If a student lives 30 minutes away from the college that he later states in his essay was his dream school since he was in middle school, but the student has never even visited the school, what would the college think? Was the student just lazy? Is the student serious? How could this be his dream school but he's never even visited it one time?

공식 대학 방문은 교신 기록을 만들기 위한 한 가지 방법입니다. 여기서 대학 방문이란 시간 되는 주말에 슬쩍 찾아가 캠퍼스 둘러보기가 아닙니다. 모든 대학은 공식적인 방문 일정이 정해져 있습니다. 일정에 맞추어 학생과 학부모 함께 대학을 방문하여 학교에 대해 알아보고, 학교 관계자나 학생들이 인솔하는 캠퍼스 투어를 할 수 있습니다. 이를 "인포메이션 세션"이라고 하며 무료입니다. 학교 홈페이지에서 "방문자" 또는 "입학 지원자" 탭을 클릭하면 방문 가능한 날짜와 시간을 확인할 수 있습니다. 해당 링크를 찾을 수 없으면 웹사이트 검색 창에 "인포메이션 세션"이라고 입력하여 검색하면 됩니다.

Official college visits are one way to create a history of correspondence. By college visits, however, I do not mean visiting the school on a free weekend and walking around the campus to see what it's like. No, every college has an official visiting day and time in which both students and parents can come and learn about the school, and get a campus tour by a school official or student. These are called, "Information Sessions" and they are free. You can find out the days and times by going to the school's website and usually clicking on the "Visitors" or "Prospective Students" tabs. If you cannot find those links, just type in "information session" in the search bar of the website, if there is one.

정보 세션에 도착하면, 학생은 방문 기록을 남기기 위해 등록(sign-in)을 해야 합니다. 저는 학생들이 정보 세션과 캠퍼스 투어 중에 학교에 대해 가능한 많이 배울 수 있도록 적극적으로 질문할 것을 추천합니다. 현재 그 대학에 다니는 사람과 이야기해야만 알 수 있는 정보를 얻으려고 노력하세요. 이 정보는 나중에 학생이 대학 지원할 때 에세이 소재로 활용하게 될 수도 있습니다.

After arriving at the information session, the student should sign-in to leave a record of his visit. I would also advise students to ask questions to learn as much about the school as possible during both the information session and campus tour. Try to learn something that you could only know by talking to someone who attends the college. This information may be something that can be used later in the student's college essay.

현재 11학년- 고2- 학생이라면 겨울 방학이나 봄 방학에 대학을 방문하는 것이 좋습니다. 그러나 여기에 추가로 그 이전에 방문한 경험이 있는 것도 도움이 될 것입니다. 대학 입시 경쟁에서는 뭐라도 남다르게 하나 더 한 것이 중요합니다. 대학 방문은 대학과의 교신 기록을 만드는 한 가지 쉬운 방법이며, 이는 학생들에게 또 하나의 경쟁력을 만들어 줍니다.

Winter break or spring break in the student's 11th grade year are good times to visit, but previous visits in addition to these would be even better.
