미국 대학 입시: 클럽 활동에 얼마나 참여해야 할까?

대학 진학을 준비하며 주변을 둘러보다 보면 대학 입시라는 회오리바람 속에 길을 잃기가 싶습니다. 수험생 자녀를 둔 학부모들은 대학 입시라는 경쟁 세계에서 살아남도록 준비시킨다는 명목하에 자녀들을 너무나 많은 클럽과 활동에 참여시키곤 합니다. 클럽 활동 경험이 많을수록 더 경쟁력이 있을 것이라 믿고 있기 때문입니다. 내가 게으른 학생이 아니라는 것을 대학에 보여주어야겠기에, 가급적 많은 특별 과외 활동에 참여해야 한다는 말이 옳을까요? 아닙니다.

It's easy to get lost in the whirlwind of college prep when you begin to look around and see that parents are enrolling their kids in so many different clubs and activities, all in the name of preparing them for the competitive world of college admissions. The more clubs the better, parents think. You want to show colleges that you're not a lazy student, so students should participate in as many extracurricular activities as possible, right? WRONG.

대학진학을 희망하는 학생들이 무수히 많은 활동에 참여하고 있는 것처럼 보일 수 있지만, 실제로 명문대학에 입학하는 학생들은 다른 학생들과 다르게 행동합니다. 의도한 것이든 아니든, 그들은 다른 사람들과는 다른 행보를 취합니다.

While it may seem that the vast majority of college aspiring students are participating in countless activities, the students who actually get admitted to high ranking selective colleges do not follow the crowd. They do things differently, whether intentionally or out of sheer necessity.

대부분 학부모들의 행보는 목적을 위한 '행동'을 취하는 것이 아닌, 주변 사람들의 행동에 영향을 받은 '반응'입니다. 학부모들에게 왜 특정 활동을 자녀에게 시키고 있는지 물어보면 "다른 사람들이 다 하는 것이라서"라는 황당한 대답을 종종 듣게 됩니다. 그러나 문제는 그 '다른 사람들' 또한 그들 주변의 '다른 사람들'을 따라 하는 것일 뿐이라는 것입니다. 결국 대부분의 학부모들은 정확한 지식이나 정보에 기반한 행동을 독자적으로 취하는 것이 아니라, 보편적인 움직임 관성을 따라 움직인다는 결론입니다. 대학이 여러 활동에 참여하는 바쁜 학생들을 원한다는 가정은 대학 입시에서 가장 잘못된 생각 중 하나이며, 특히 명문대 진학에 있어서 더욱 방해물로 작용합니다.

The actions, or maybe more appropriately, reactions, of most parents seem to be motivated by the actions of people around them. When I ask parents why they have their kids do certain activities, I often get the unimpressive reply of, "everyone else is doing it." The problem is, "everyone else" is just copying everyone else as well. In the end, most parents are not acting on accurate knowledge or information; they're just moving on the crowd's inertia. This presumption that colleges want busy students who are involved in a lot of activities is probably one of the most misconstrued myths in college prep, especially when it comes to highly selective colleges.

명문 대학들은 다양한 배경의 신입생 모으기를 그 어떤 무엇보다 중요하게 여기고 원합니다. 이 목적을 달성하는 방법으로, 대학은 비슷비슷한 수많은 활동에 적당히 참여하고 별 볼 일 없는 결과를 내는 학생들이 아니라, 남다른 방식으로 눈에 띄는 성과를 낸 학생들을 선택합니다. 저는 항상 제가 지도하는 학생들에게 정말 좋아하고 타고난 재능이 있다고 판단되는 한 두 가지 활동을 선택하고, 이것을 중심에 배치하여 고등학교 생활을 계획하도록 조언합니다. 예를 들어, 만약 학생이 글쓰기와 미술에 열정을 느낀다면, 학생은 학교 신문에 기고하거나 더 어린 학생들을 대상으로 글쓰기를 가르치거나, 직접 쓴 작품을 출판하거나, 지역 사회 기관에서 자원봉사를 하면서 다양한 글을 작성할 수 있고, 미술 대회에 참가하거나, 학교 연감을 디자인하고, 학교나 지역의 벽화 제작을 도와주고, 어린 학생들에게 미술을 가르치면서 미술 포트폴리오 (미대 전공을 할 것이 아니라도 대학 입시에 도움이 될 수 있습니다)를 작성할 수 있습니다.

Selective colleges, above all, want a diverse freshman class. The best way to achieve this is to select students who stand out in different ways, not students who do a little of everything and don't stand out in anything. I always advise my students to choose 1 or 2 things in which they are really passionate and naturally gifted, then center all their activities during their high school years around these 1 or 2 things. For example, if a student loves writing and fine art, then the student can write for the school newspaper, tutor younger students in writing, publish her own book, draft various writings while volunteering in local community organizations, enter art competitions, design the school's yearbook, help make a mural in the school or community, tutor younger students in art, create an art portfolio (even if the student will not be majoring in art), etc.

요점은, 대학이 가장 영향력 있고 인상적이라고 관심을 보일 지원자는, 자신의 열정을 따라 긴 시간 동안 자신의 분야에 깊게 파고든 학생들이라는 사실입니다. 대학은 열정적이고 끈질기며 영향력이 있는 학생들을 원합니다. 그러기 위해서는 집중해야 합니다. 핵심적인 몇 가지에 온마음으로 집중하고 있다면, 별 관심 없는 다른 활동에 참여할 시간이 없을 것입니다.

The point is, the most impactful and impressive candidates that colleges will see are those who followed their passions and dove deeply into them for a prolonged period of time. Colleges want students who are passionate, persistent, and impactful, and you can only do that by focusing. When you truly focus on the critical few, there won't be enough time to involve yourself in too many other activities.
