Racial Equality in the U.S.

Nathan, do you think the U.S. has achieved racial equality?

Well, certainly, we've made some progress. However, I think that we still have a long way to go.

Really? But you elected an African-American president and then re-elected him. Doesn't that show progress?

Yes, of course, that's a step in the right direction. However, 60% of blacks say that job discrimination against them continues.

Oh, that's not good.

Yes, and many blacks are distrustful of the police.

That's terrible!

Unfortunately, blacks are six times more likely to be imprisoned than whites, and Hispanics are three times more likely.

Wow! Those are shocking statistics.

They are, and that's why I say that, while Americans have made progress, they need to do a lot more.

Okay. I see what you mean.

You went through a red light. I'm going to write you a ticket!

The man behind me broke the same law. Why aren't you giving him a ticket?

I'll get to him later.

Why am I alone getting a ticket? Is it because I'm black?

Well, you are more noticeable.

This is not fair!

why don't you paint yourself white whenever you drive? It will help!

Way to go!

Hey Buddy! Get out of the way! I'm in a hurry.

The defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement took place on August 28, 1963, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his famous "I have a Dream: speech in Washington, DC. In fact, a group of scholars ranked this address as the top american speech of the 20th century. In the speech, Dr. King called for an end to racism in the United States and for civil and economic rights for all people, including African-Americans. He dreamed of a day when his children would "not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Some would say King's dream has been achieved. In 2008, the United States elected its first African-American president, Barack Obama. One of the richest women in the entire country is a black woman, Oprah Winfrey. Thus, many would say that African-Americans have achieved full equality. However, a poll taken by Pew Research in mid-2016 showed that whites and blacks in America view the issues of race and equality very differently. When Americans were asked if race relations in the U.S. were "generally bad" or "generally good, " 61% of blacks and 58% of Hispanics chose "generally bad, " while only 45% of whites chose that evaluation.

When asked if the country had made enough changes to achieve racial equality, 38% of whites said yes, but 88% of blacks and 70 % of Hispanics said that more changes were needed. Indeed, 43% of blacks expressed doubt that the country would ever make the changes that would lead to equal rights for black people.

Are blacks treated less fairly  than whites in the workiplace? A total of 64% of blacks say yes, but only 22% of whites agree. By overwhelming numbers, blacks also say that they have experienced unfair treatment. Some 47% of blacks state that other people were suspicious of them, and about 45% say that people around them acted as though they weren't smart. Only 10% of whites report such unfair treatment.

What do you think?

1. Are you surprised that such a large number of African-Americans believe equality has still not been realized?

Yes, I am. I thought that equality has almost been realized.

2. What was your reaction when you heard that the U.S. had elected its first black president?

I was surprised and felt good because it looked equality being realized.

3. Who are the major groups of minorities in your country? Do they suffer from any discrimination?

I think that multicultural family are the major groups of minorities in our country. At school they might be suffer from discrimination because they are all children. They might be only judged by the color of their skin. They should be judged by the content of their character but they are all too young to do so in elementary school. For the children are intend to think about  only looking differences

4. Are there any minorities who are in positions of power in your country?  Who are they?

There is a North Korean defector lawmaker in our country. I think that he is a minority who are in positions of power.

defector 탈주자. 망명자.

5. Would you like to see more immigrants come to your country? Why or why not?

I would not like to see more immigrants come to our country. Because we are single ethnicity. However very low birth rate of our country makes me think that we have to get more immigrants to our country.

6. Does your country have any Chinatowns? How big are they? Do you ever visit the area?

Yes, our country has Chinatowns.

From what I've heard, it's great.

 No, I don't.

7. Do you have any friends who are members of a minority group?

No, I don't.
