Climate Change

Hello Ha-Eun. What do you have in that bag?

Hi Matthew. I just bought some new light bulbs.

Oh? What kind of light bulbs?

They are called compact fluorescent light buylbs, or CFLs.

Are they better than the traditional type of light bulb?

Absolutely! They are more energy efficient, so they save money.

Well, that's always good.

Also, because they use less energy, they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It seems like such a small step for one person to take. However, it can certainly help.

Yes, that's true. As my mother always says, "Every little bit helps."

I'm not feeling well. I ache all over. You're harassing me with polluted air and water and cutting down all the trees.

I can barely breathe. Do you call this sort of destruction "DEVELOPMENT"? How stupid are you? I can't survive unless you stop this kind of harrowing destruction immediately.

The Doomsday Clock is ticking! Let's leave and find a new colony in space.

Don't worry! Our planet is strong enough to hang on for another millennium! He's just pretending to be sick.

The term "climate change" refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. For that reason, the phenomenon is also called "global warming." Almost all scientists believe that climate change is caused primarily by the human use of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, which release carbon diozide and other greenhouse gases into the air. The gases that are released by human activity trap heat within the atmosphere. This added heat can have a huge effect on Earth's ecosystems, causing rising sea levels, severe weather patterns, and droughts.

According to experts, from 1880 to 2015, the Earth had warmed by about 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit (0.94 degrees Celsius). That may sound like a small number, but when you consider the fact that it is an average of the Earth's surface, it is actually quite high.

The reality of global warming explains why glaciers are melting, and the oceans are rising at an accelerating rate. Researchers maintain that most of the warming in the last sixty years has been caused by the human release of greenhouse gases. If these emissions continue at the present pace, global warming could ultimately exceed 8 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius), which would make the planet incapable of supporting a large human puopulation.

Individuals can limit their greenhouse gas emissions by changing to energy-efficient light bulbs, heating and cooling more efficiently, sealing and insulating one's home, recycling when possible, reducing water waste, and using solar panels.

A small percentage of people question the claim that climate change is due to temperature are part of the natural variations in Earth's climate that have fluctuated over millennia. Such naysayers are called "climate change deniers."

What do you think?

1. Do you believe that climate change is real and that it is due to human activity?

2. Do you think you have personally seen a warming of the climate during your lifetime?

3. Some people say, "The summers are getting longer, and the winters are getting shorter." Do you agree?

4. Do you know any "climate change deniers"? What arguments do they present?

5. Are you familiar with the Kyoto Protocol? Has yuour country signed the agreement?

6. Is your government doing anything to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

7. What are you doing personally to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions?
