호랑이 담배 먹던 시절이라 해야 할까... 하하 맞을 것이다. 커다란 텔렉스라는 기계가 있었고 미국인 상사가 적어주는 영어를 그 기계로 찍으면 분홍색 리본이 줄줄줄줄 길게 늘어졌으며 다다다다 그 펀칭된 것을 미국으로 보내 소통하던 시절. 난 결혼하고 여자가 다닐 수 있는 몇 안 되는 직장 외국인 상사에 다녔다. 그때 나의 보스 미국인 사장은 종종 밖에서 전화로 업무지시를 했다. 이런이런 내용을 즉시 미국에 텔렉스로 보내라~ 모 요런 거. 지지 지직 잘 안 들리는 영어, 전화통화는 더더욱. 제대로 못 알아들어 끙끙대던 시절, 아 영어, 영어.... 참 울기도 많이 했고 영어 유창하게 하고자 무던히도 노력했던 그때 1980년대 초반, 그렇게 세월은 지나갔는데 문득 보니 지금은 그때 비하면 영어 공부하기 너무 좋은 환경이다. 그때 영어 리스닝하려면 AFKN 뉴스를 카세트테이프에 녹음해 딱딱 끊어가며 듣고 또 듣고 완전히 받아 적을 때까지 탁탁 탁탁 얼마나 그 카세트 리턴 버튼을 누르고 또 눌렀던가. 그 옛날 영어에 고생하던 게 아깝기도 하고 추억도 되어 난 계속 영어를 한다. 그러면서 덤으로 주어지는 200 자 영작, 이 또한 열심히 한다. 잊지 않기 위해 계속 열심히 하기 위해 난 이 곳에 기록을 한다. 이곳에 기록을 하는 순간 무언가 책임감이 따르고 계속해야만 할 것 같은 그런 게 생긴다. 그래서 기록한다. 영어로 쓰건 한국어로 쓰건 길건 짧건 글은 글이고 브런치는 글을 쓰는 곳이니까. 하하

Have you ever had a part time job? What did you do? What was the best part time job you ever had and what was the worst?
Yes, I have. I have taught Korean to many foreigners. It was a part-time jobs just before I open the Institute and eventually, the opening failed because of the different opinions of the opening members. So despite the long days of preparing, we decided not to open the institute. I've already quit my job teaching Korean which I liked so much. I gave a letter of resignation and tried many ways to open the institute but failed. So I miss it when I taught Korean to the Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese women who married Koreans. I had a time of free talking in Korean. I made a topic and let them talk about anything even one word. I tried many ways to make them to talk even one word in front of the members of that class. It was great. At first, they hesitated to say even one word, but when the mood became good, they talked a lot. At that time, I felt so good. They focused on me a lot even my one word. It was great. How wonderful it is to see the very concentrating eyes of foreign ladies. I should not have resigned from that class.

축구 보려고 밤잠이 많은 나는 일찍부터 잠자리에 들었다. "여보, 나 꼭 깨워줘~" 하고. 계속 깨우는 소리를 들었으나 에고.. 정작 내가 일어난 것은 "아깝다. 졌다." 하며 그가 잠자리에 들 때. 새벽 3시. 그냥 다시 잘까? 하니 아까워 이렇게 브런치 글을 만지작거리고 있다. 새벽에 홀로 깨어 공부하는 이 맛, 완전 학창 시절로 돌아간 느낌이다. 공부를 하면 나는 마치 학생이 된 것 같아 참 기분이 좋다. 깜깜한 이 새벽, 커피 한 잔 타 와야겠다. 잠은 완전히 달아났다. 다시 자기도 정말 시간이 아깝고.
