11월 컬렉션. 데이비드 호크니. Woldgate
2011년 그 해 4월 Woldgate 여러 날은 이러이러했다. 30여 일에 걸쳐 꽃과 빛이 수 놓은 볼드게이크 자연은 그야말로 장관이다. 이 광경 앞에서 침묵은 사치에 불과하다. 다만 이 아름다움을 표현할 재주라곤 예쁘다는 말뿐인 것이 원망스럽다. 한데 그로부터 10여 년을 보낸 2021년 볼드게이트는 어떤 모습일까. 도시가스 공사가 있었다고 했고, 숱하게 많은 방문객이 다녀도 갔을 4월은 이 작품처럼 여전할까. 해서 든 생각이 데이비드 호크니는 볼드게이트를 이데아로 남겨두고 싶었던 것 같다. "아름다운 꽃이 떨어지고 아름다운 경치가 폐허가 되어도 아름다움 자체, 즉 미의 이데아는 없어지지 않는다."라고 플라톤이 남긴 이 말을 믿고 따른 듯 싶었다. 때로는 묵직하게 간혹 경쾌하게 움터 생동하는 아름다움을 영원히 간직하고 바라는 마음이 가장 유난한 4월을 빗대 호크니는 볼드게이트를 미의 이데아로 둔 셈이다. 좋다. 내 삶 아름다움의 이데아로 볼드게이트 4월은 딱 좋다.
