서른 즈음에 떠나는 봉사활동 - 

No matter how much I think,

The answer is already set!

#1. 

국제관계를 전공하면서 '국제개발의 이해'라는 과목을 수강했던 적이 있다.

그 수업에서 코이카를 처음 알게 되었다. 

I majored in international relations and took a course called 'Understanding International Development'.

I first learned about KOICA in that class.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)

The objective of the KOICA is to promote friendly cooperation and mutual exchange between the Republic of Korea and developing countries as well as support economic and social development of these countries and promote international development cooperation.

코이카 단원 활동 현황

지금까지 진행되고 있는 국제개발원조를 보면 여러 나라에서 했던 개발원조가 실질적으로 그들에게 도움이 되기보다는 그저 돈 많은 나라들의 명분을 채우는- 밑 빠진 독에 물을 들이붓는 식의 보여주기 위한 원조라는 생각이 강했다. 

Looking at the international development aid that has been carried out so far, I thought that the development aid that was done in various countries was actually to fill the cause of the rich countries, rather than to help the developing countries.

여러가지 형태의 국제개발원조 중에서 사람이 직접 가서 기술을 전해주고 교육을 하는 일이 가장 효과적이겠지만 그마저도 개선 속도가 매우 더디고 개인의 노력이 많이 필요한 일이기 때문에, 일의 효율과 빠른 효과를 중시하는 내가 할 일은 아니었다. 허허허

Among the various forms of international development assistance, it would be most effective for people to go directly to transfer skills and educate themselves. But It's very hard. The rate of improvement is very slow and individual efforts are needed a lot .. So, It was not my job to do. 

#2. 

졸업을 하고 무엇보다 효율과 스피드 그리고 겉보기에 그럴듯한 디자인 관련 업무를 하는 회사에서 일을 하게 되었다. 매일 야근을 하고 밤을 새며 보기 좋고 먹기도 좋은 기획서를 만들다가 콘텐츠 부서로 이동한 후, 관광관련 콘텐츠를 만들었다. 또 다시 기계처럼 하루 5시간 이상 운전을 하고 취재를 하고, 돌아와서는 밤을 새며 글을 썼다. 

Graduated and worked in a content-design company where efficiency and speed were important. I spent a lot of time working around the clock, making plans, moving to the content department, and creating content related to culture and tourism. Again, like a machine, I drove for more than 5 hours a day and covered, and then came back and wrote at night.

2016년 1월27일 새벽2시에 나는 사무시에 있었나보다.

엄청난 속도로, 가장 효율적으로 일을 하는 것은 적성에 꽤나 잘 맞았다. 그리고 몸이 피곤하긴 했지만 전국 방방 곳곳을 돌아다니는 것 또한 흥미로운 일이었다. 

그러나 어느새 나는 생각도 마음도 텅텅 빈 기계가 되어 의미없는 말들만 주절거리고 있었다.

통장에 들어오는 돈은 지친 몸과 마음을 달래기 위한 'ㅆ발비용'으로 소비되고, 내 체력과 건강은 바닥을 쳤다. 

It was quite a good fit for me to work at the fastest rate, most efficiently. It was also interesting to go around the country, although I was tired.

But suddenly I realized that I was an empty machine and I was writing a story without a soul.

The money that comes into my account is consumed to save my tired body and mind, and my physical strength and health have bottomed out.

2016년 10월 즈음, 야근을 하다가 메일을 열었는데, 코이카 국제협력단에서 메일이 와있었다.

보통 같으면 읽지도 않고 휴지통으로 버렸겠지만, 이상하게 한번 열어봐야겠다는 생각이 들었다.

113기 해외봉사단 모집안내 메일이었다. 

나는 국제관계와 경제를 전공했기 때문에, 전문 기술분야의 단원을 모집하는 해외봉사단에 지원하기가 어려웠다. 

띠용!! 그런데 이번 모집요강에는 '관광' 분야가 있었다. 

As always, I opened my e-mail while I was working at night, and there was an e-mail from KOICA. In the meantime, I did not read it, but I dropped it into the trash bin, but I thought I had to open the mail once.

It was an email containing the recruitment of 113 overseas volunteer corps.

Because I majored in international relations and economics, it was difficult to apply to overseas volunteer groups who recruited members of specialist fields.

Tibet! However, there was a field of 'tourism' in this application proposal.

그들이 요구하는 경력 요청사항도 잘 맞았고, 관광학을 전공으로 하지 않았어도 내가 하던 일이니 할 수 있을 것 같았다.

Even if I did not major in tourism, it seemed to be possible because it was my job.

그리고 빨리빨리 효율 우선주의에 너무 지쳐서였을까, 

지금이 지나면 이런 가치있는 일을 할 기회는 다시는 없을 것 같았다.

And I am too tired of efficiency priorities.

I thought I will not have the opportunity to do such a valuable thing in the future.

보통은 여러 국가에서 단원을 뽑기 때문에 희망국가를 3지망까지 선택할 수 있었지만, 이번에 '관광'단원은 몽골에서만 뽑아서 나에게는 선택의 여지가 없었다. 

고스톱을 치다보면 '못 먹어도 고' 할 때가 있는데, 이 상황이 바로 그런 상황이었다고 말 할 수 있겠다.

눈 깜짝할 사이에 자기소개서를 쓰고, 건강검진을 하고, 면접을 봤다. 

그리고 어느새 나는 앞자리가 바뀐 새해를 강원도 영월 교육원에서 시작하고 있었다. 

Usually, applicants could choose the desired country up to 3 candidates, but this time the 'tourist' unit was selected only in Mongolia. So I had no choice.

In the blink of an eye I wrote an application, did a medical checkup, and interviewed.

And I was starting a new year at Yeongwol Education Center in Gangwon province.
