ONE HUNDRED TREES

A Story about small village in Mongolia

4월의 토요일 낮, 

처음 마주한 이 곳엔 봄이 찾아오려 하고 있었다.

마치 강원도 분지의 아담한 마을을 연상케 하는 조용하고 한적한 모습이었다. 

종모드(Зуунмод)는 [Зуун : 백, мод: 나무] 몽골어로 직역하면 백개의 나무라는 뜻. 

종모드의 북쪽에는 울란바타르와 연결된 복드항 산이 위치해 있다. 이 산 밑에는 '만조시르(혹은 만치르라고 부름, 만수보살)라는 수도원 터가 남아있다. 종모드의 유일한 관광지...

만치르는 몽골에서 가장 크고 중요한 수도원 중의 하나로, 20여개의 사원과 300여명 이상의 수도원이 살았던 것으로 알려져 있다. 하지만 공산주의의 영향으로 수도원 건물은 모두 파괴되고 지금은 3개의 건물만 남아있다. 음, 어쨌든! 

공산주의가 들어서기 전 약 200여년간 만조시르의 승려들은 복드항 산 주위를 잘 관리해서 나무가 많아졌고, 그때부터 종모드라는 이름이 붙었다고 한다.  

종모드는 울란바타르를 둘러싸고 있는 투브아이막(төв аймаг)의 도청소재지이다. 한국으로 이야기하자면 서울을 둘러싸고 있는 경기도의 도청소재지인 수원쯤 되겠다. 그렇지만 수원을 생각해서는 안됐다... 

며칠 머물렀다가 돌아가는 여행이 아닌 앞으로 2년 동안 살게 될 동네였다.

어떤 곳일까, 슈퍼에서는 어떤 것들을 팔까, 어떤 이웃들이 사는 곳일까- 정말 궁금했다.

그러나 아무리 구글링을 해봐도, 심지어 몽골어로 검색을 해봐도 이 동네에 대해 알 수 있는 것은 많지 않았다. 

수도에서 약 30Km 정도 떨어져 있어 차로 이동하면 약 1시간 정도가 걸리고, 종모드에서 약 15km 떨어진 곳에 훈식트 훈디 신공항이 건설되고 있다. 공사가 거의 끝났고 마무리 단계이지만 언제 개항할지는 아직 미지수. (2년 뒤 다시 한국으로 돌아갈 때쯤...?)

구글링 결과 가장 큰 수확은 이 도시에 '본죽(!!!)'이 있다는 것 정도ㅋㅋㅋ

 나에겐 큰 위로였다!

On Saturday in April,

Spring was about to come here.

It was a quiet and relaxing appearance reminiscent of a small village.

Zuunmod [Зуунмод- Зуун: hundred, мод: tree]. Mongolian literals means one hundred trees. 

On the north side of Zuunmod, There is a Mt.Bogd khaan that linked to Ulaanbaatar. Under the mountain, there is an old temple site, named Manzushir.

Manzushir is one of the largest and most important monasteries in Mongolia, with over 20 temples and more than 300 monasteries. However, due to the influence of communism, monastery buildings have all been destroyed and now only three buildings remain.

For about 200 years before the beginning of communism, the monks of Manzushir managed the Mount Bokdok, and as a result, the tree became thickened and was named zuunmod.

Zuunmod is the Capital City of Tov aimag (төв аймаг), which surrounds Ulaanbaatar. As for Korea, I think it will be Suwon, the location of Gyeonggi province that surrounds Seoul.

I really wondered what the city was like and where my neighbors live.

However, there was very little that could be found through Internet.

It is about 30Km away from the capital, it takes about 1 hour by car, and New International Airport is being constructed about 15km away from Zuunmod. The construction is almost finished  but it's unknown when it will open. 

The biggest output of Google's results is that there is a 'BonJuk(Korean rice soup Restaurant)' in this city!

투브아이막 안에는 27의 솜(한국의 '시'단위의 행정구역)이 있다. 그중에 종모드는 위의 지도에서 빨간 점만큼의 면적을 차지하고 있다. (바양차강의 색칠은 아무 의미 없음)

6개의 동에 약 17000명이 거주하고 있는 작은 동네이지만 투브아이막 도청, 경찰국, 교육국, 법원 등등 각종 공공기관이 위치하고 있다. 

이 곳에는 투브아이막의 주도이기는 하지만, 그렇다 할 산업시설이 없다. 그래서 종모드 주민들은 대부분 관공서에서 근무를 하거나, 작은 가게들을 운영하면서 생활을 유지하고 있다. 이 외에도 각종 재단의 지원을 많이 받고 있다고 한다. 실제로 종모드 안에는 구세군, 월드비전, 본죽 선교 매장 등 익숙한 로고들을 만날 수 있다. 

이 동네에는 5층보다 높은 건물은 아예 없으며, 약 700m 정도의 중심 거리에 관공서와 은행 등의 주요 기관들이 밀집되어 있었다. 

There is a sum of 27 in the tov aimag ('City' unit of administration). Among them, the mode is occupied by the red dot in the map. (There is no meaning to coloring the Bayan Tsagaan)

It is a small town with about 17,000 people living in 6 houses, but there are various public institutions such as Tov aimag provincial government, police, education, court and so on.

Although Zuunmod is the Capital City of  Tov aimag, there is no industrial facility to do so. 

So most of the residents of Zuunmod work in government offices or operate small store. In addition, they are receiving support from many foundations. You can meet familiar logos such as the Salvation Army, World Vision, and Bokjeong Mission Store.

There are no buildings higher than the 5th floor in this town, and the main facilities such as government offices and banks are concentrated in the center distance of about 700m.

이 도시에 중요한 볼 거리는 없었지만, 시간에 따라 계절에 따라 다양한 색을 반사하고 있었다.

그리고 사람들도 시간의 흐름에 따라 다양한 삶의 모습을 볼 수 있었다.

초기의 설명은 뒤로하고 이제는 이들의 사는 모습들을 글과 사진을 통해 소개해보려 한다.

The city had a variety of colors depending on the time of the year.

And in that, people showed various lives according to the time.

So far, this is a brief introduction to Mongolia. From now on, I would like to introduce them through writings and photographs.
