Let me tell you

Hans Abrahamsen

덴마크의 현대음악 작곡가 Hans Abrahamsen(한스 아브라함센)은 1960년대 중반에 등장한 "New Simplicity"운동, 즉 당시의 아방가르드 음악의 복잡성에 대항하는 흐름을 수용하여 표현상의 간결법을 추구하였습니다. 또한 1972년 코펜하겐에서 결성된 Guppen for Alternativ Msik의 일원으로 사회 정치적인 메시지를 지닌, 새로운 형태의 새로운 음악을 추구하였습니다. 이후에는 낭만주의의 특성을 드러나기도 하였는데요.

그러다가 돌연, 1990년부터 1998년까지, 그는 짧은 노래 단 한 곡외에는 작곡활동을 하지 않았는데요. 그가 원하는 것을 작곡할 수 없고, 음악의 복잡성으로 인해 "백지로 인해 마비된(paralyzed by the white paper)" 상태에 이르렀다고 합니다. 이러한 슬럼프를 돌파할 수 있었던 건, 바흐의 작품을 새롭게 편곡하면서 음악에 대한 새로운 관점을 가지게 되고, 이전에 자신이 추구하던 음악적 기법에 모더니즘적 성향을 강화시켜, 더욱 간결하고 절대적인 음악세계를 확립해 나갔습니다.

1971년 Nacht und Trompeten에 이어, 베를린 필하모닉의 두번째 위촉 작품으로 2013년 탄생한 가곡 연작인 Let me tell you는 2008년 출간 된 Paul Griffiths의 동명 원작을 바탕으로, 셰익스피어의 <햄릿> 속 주인공인 오필리아(Ophelia)를 화자로 설정, 자신의 이야기를 481단어를 사용하여 표현합니다. 실제로 셰익스피어의 <햄릿>에서 오필리아가 말하는 대사들의 단어 수가 정확하게 481단어라고 하네요. 이 작품은 아래의 세 부분으로 구성되어 있습니다.

Part I (시간과 기억)

1. Let me tell you how it was

I know I can do this

I have the powers:

I take them here.

I have the right.

My words may be poor

but they will have to do.

There was a time when I could not do this:

I remember that time.

2. O but memeory is not one but many

a long music we have made

and will make again,

over and over.

with some things we know and some we do not,

some that are true and some we have made up,

some that have stayed from long before,

and some that have come this morning,

some that will go tomorrow

and some that have long been there

but that we will never find,

for to memeory there is no end

3. There was a time, I remember, when we had no music,

a time when there was no time for music,

and what is music if not time -

time of now and then umbled into one another,

time turned and loosed,

time bended,

time blown up here and there,

time turned and loosed,

time bended,

Part II (사랑)

4. Let me tell you how it is

for you are the one who made me more that I was,

you are the one who loosed out this music.

Your face is my music lesson

and I sing.

5. Now I do not mind if it is day, if it is night.

If it is night,

an owl will call out.

If it is morning,

a robin will tune his bells

Night, day: there is no difference for me.

What will make the difference is if you are with me.

For you are my sun.

You have sun-blasted me,

and turned me to light.

You have made me like glass-

like glass in and ecstasy from your light,

like glass in which light rained

and rained and rained and goes on,

like glass in which there are showers of light,

light that cannot end.

Part III (눈내리는 풍경 - 눈의 정신적인 상태)

6. I know you are there

I know I will find you.

Let me tell you how it will be.

7. I will go out now.

I will let go the door

and not look to see my hand as I take it away.

Snow falls.

So:I will go in the snow.

I will have my hope with me.

I look up,

as if I could see the snow as it falls,

as if I could keep my eye on a little of it

and see it come down

all the way to the ground.

I cannot.

The snow flowers are all like each other

and I cannot keep my eyes on one.

I will give up this and go on.

I will go on.

이 작품이 발표된 후 음악계의 반응은 실로 놀라웠는데요. 2016년 Grawemeyer 상, 그라모폰 지 현대음악상, 디아파종 황금상 등 다수의 상을 수상한데 이어 영국 Guardian 지에서 뽑은 21세기 최고의 클래식음악에서 1위를 차지하기도 하였습니다. 추운 겨울, 절망적인 오필리아의 심정을 떠올리며 들어보세요. 베를린 필하모닉과 더불어, 이 곡의 위촉 대상자였던 소프라노 Barbara Hannigan의 노래입니다.
