Glitter and be gay/캉디드의 탄식
Candide
미국의 지휘자로 명성이 높았지만, 위대한 작곡가이기도 했던 Leonard Bersntein(레너드 번스타인)의 오페라 또는 오페레타인 <Candide(캔디드)>는 제목에서도 암시되듯이, 프랑스의 지성 콜테르의 <캉디드>를 기반으로, 당시 18세기 프랑스에 팽배하던 '낙천주의'에 반기를 든 원작의 메시지에 풍자와 휴머니티를 가미하고 있습니다. 주류였던 것 같지만, 유대교에 동성애자에 공산주의자로 미국의 주류가 공격할 만한 요소들을 모두 가지고 있었던 번스타인의 심정이 담긴 작품이라고도 할 수 있겠습니다. 한국에서는 2019년 서울시향 정기공연시 콘서트 오페라 형식으로 전막 초연했습니다. 아직 원작을 못 읽어봤는데, 조만간 찾아서 읽고 싶을 만큼 매력적인 오페라입니다.
이 오페레타에서 가장 유명하면서, 해학과 슬픔의 아이러니를 동시에 가지고 있는 노래이죠. 1막의 중후반부 파리에 도착한 캔디드. 파리 거리에서 두 신사가 한 여자와 사랑을 나누고 싶어하는데 그 여자는 이전에 전쟁에서 죽었던, 창녀가 된 퀴네곤드입니다. 너무나도 슬픈 운명이지만, 겉으로는 명랑한 척 해야 하기에 "즐겁고 명랑하게(Gilitter and be gay)" 노래를 부르기 시작합니다. 가사에도 이러한 아이러니가 잘 드러나 있습니다.

Victimized by bitter, bitter circumstance.

원작도 그렇고, 이 오페라는 기본적으로 모험담이기에 유럽과 남미들을 중심으로 이야기가 펼쳐집니다. 파리 이전에는, 행복한 나날을 보냈지만, 전쟁이 발발하여 캔디드가 군대에 강제로 입대되고 퀴네곤드 역시 전쟁 중에 죽은 걸로 설정이 되죠. 이러한 폐허 속에서 캔디드는 퀴네곤드의 이름을 부르며 "탄식합니다 (Candide's Lament)"
