영미문학 소설을 읽으면서 다양한 영어 표현과 문법을 익힐 수 있다면 참 좋겠다는 생각을 해왔다. 수업 시간에 가끔씩 제인 오스틴 이야기를 하지만 소설을 아는 학생은 매우 드물다. 소설 속 재미있는 인상 깊은 장면을 소개하면서 소설에 대한 흥미를 주려고 노력한 적도 많다. 오늘 소개할 문법은 조동사 수동태 표현인데, 두 세가지 결합된 문법이 나오기 시작하면 학생들은 문법을 매우 어려워한다. 그런 두려움을 없애는 방법은 많이 읽고 풀어보는 것이다. 제인 오스틴의 <노생거 사원(Northanger Abbey)>에서 주인공 캐서린 몰랜드(Catherine Morland)가 헨리 틸니의 어머니가 쓰던 방을 비밀스러운 감옥이나 범죄 현장으로 오해하고 몰래 탐색하는 장면을 바탕으로 지문을 구성했다. 이 지문은 조동사 수동태 (Modal Verb + be + p.p.) 문장들을 연습할 수 있도록 재구성한 것이다. 오늘도 Gemini를 이용하여 지문을 재구성하고 문제를 만들어 보았다.
