오늘은 6.25사변일입니다. 가슴 아프지만 잊지 말아야 하는 역사임에도, 어느 순간부터 6.25는 평범한 날이 되어버린 느낌이네요.
제가 초딩시절만 해도 학교에서 6.25를 선생님들이 가슴아프게 가르쳐주시곤 했는데요. 요즘은 6.25가 일본침략이라고 아는 아이들도 많다죠. ㅠㅠ
(c)피아비키 (2013.9.25)2013년 워싱턴DC 여행 중에 들렸던 한국전쟁기념관에서, "자유는 거저 얻어지지 않는다(Freedom is not free)"는 문구를 보면서 깊은 울림을 받았던 기억이 생생합니다. 꽃다운 나이의 미국 젊은이들이 이름도 생소하고 지극히 가난했던 지구 반대편 한국을 위해 기꺼이 싸웠고 목숨을 희생했습니다. 사망자수, 부상자수, 포로수, 실종자수까지, 저 이름들을 보는데 고맙고 미안하고 먹먹하더군요.
참전용사들의 이름이 깨알같이 적혀진 희생자 추모벽을 보면서, 차마 저 곳에서 사진을 찍는데 웃을 수가 없었습니다. 우리는 잊어가는데, 미국인들은 여전히 그들의 젊은이들의 희생을 기억하며, 평일에도 여기저기 꽃다발을 놓는 모습에서, 부끄러움마저 들었던 날로 기억합니다.
값비싼 대가를 치르고 얻은 오늘날의 자유. 이 시대를 사는 우리가 반드시 기억해야 할 부분이지 않을까 싶네요. 시대는 변했어도 역사와 누군가의 희생들은 잊지 않고 기억하는 나라와 국민이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.
Today in 1950, the Korean war broke out with the attack from North Korea. It's a big tragedy and we should NOT forget this day never ever. But sadly, so many people and the country seem not to care of it anymore. It's been already quite long that 25th of June became a normal day. In my youth, I remember school teachers kept teaching us of what this day meant. What happens to our education now? What happens to our country's thinking these days?
In Sept., 2013, I visited Korean War Memorial Place during Washinton DC travelling. So many young Americans willingly died for a very small and poor country. To them, Korea was seldom known, but they fought and scarificed themselves for the Freedom of Korea.
When the numbers of the dead, the wound, the missing and the captured I saw, I got hurt, painful, and humbled. The uncountable numbers of the names of American soldiers on the wall were just shocking! And Americans never forget their young men's sacrifices. It was easy to find many memorial flowers from Americans. The day I visited was just a normal day though.
That's why I couldn't smile at all when taking a photo in this place. The message, "Freedom is not free" always gives an echo to me, then and now.
How cannot we thank God and people who didn't hesistate to give up their lives?

우리 나라 '미합중국'은 전혀 알지도 못했고 만난 적도 없던 나라(대한민국)와 그 민족(한국인)을 지키기 위해 국가의 부름에 응한 조국의 아들, 딸들에게 경의를 표한다.
