Research paper
"The standard rationale for any empirical research project or proposal (qualitative or quantitative) is structured like this:
There is this theoretical/intellectual problem X that scholars don’t fully understand
Here is what X is about and why it's important
Here is what scholars do and don't understand about X
Here is research that has been done on X
Here is a gap (or gaps) in what we know about X
Here is why it's important that those gaps be filled
There is this thing Y (variable, behavior, situation, context, theory, etc.) that is an important aspect of X but hasn't been studied (at all or enough)
Here is how/why Y is important to X
If Y has been studied, why existing efforts aren't enough
If we understand aspects of Y, here is how that will help address the gaps in X already identified
Here are the aspects of Y we need to study
Here are formal research questions and/or hypotheses about the relationship of Y to X
After that, for a proposal you would describe how you would do research to answer the questions or test the hypotheses. " (Corman, Com691 notes, 2022)
