Generative AI policy in class

8/17 학기 시작 후 한 주 정도가 지났다. 첫 주는 부담 없이 강의계획서를 함께 보고 서로 소개 후에 간단한 수업을 진행하거나 일찍 끝나는 편이다. 챗GPT (Generative AI ChatGPT)가 한국에서도 크게 화제가 되었던 것처럼 미국 대학에서도 챗GPT 사용에 대해서 작년부터 큰 관심사이다. 

ChatGPT는 이렇게 편한 툴이 있나 싶을 정도로 여러 방면에서 도움을 받고 있어 사랑받을 수밖에 없는 AI친구이다. 구글 검색 전에 물어보기도 하고 문법 체크를 하기도 하면서 매일 사용한다. 아카데미에서는 저널 인용까지 되면서 학생들 과제를 채점하는 데 있어서 어떻게 해야 하나 다들 고민하는 추세였지만, ChatGPT에서 인용을 더 이상 하지 않게 되었다. 또 이전과 다르게 올 가을 학기부터는 학업에 도움을 줄 수도 있기 때문에 함께 사용할 수 있는 방법을 강의계획서에 포함하기도 했다. 

단, 모든 강의가 ChatGPT사용을 허용하는 것은 아니다. 학부 기초수업처럼 객관식 퀴즈나 개념에 대한 짧은 단답형 문항이나 수업 중 에세이 시험의 경우는 ChatGPT가 필요 없다. 하지만 대학원 수업 중 연구 페이퍼나 좀 더 긴 페이퍼를 써야 하는 경우에는 강의 계획서에 내용이 들어간다. 

Acceptable Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools

Artificial Intelligence (AI), including ChatGPT, is being used in workplaces all over the world to save time and improve outcomes by generating text, images, computer code, audio, or other media. Use of AI tools is generally welcome and even encouraged in this class, except for the discussion readiness checks, which should be based on the week’s readings. 

For papers, AI tools might be employed to brainstorm, draft, edit, revise, etc. However:

Any writing submitted must be substantially written by you. For instance, it is not acceptable to prompt an AI tool and use the output as the entirety of your submission or parts of your submission. 

AI tools do not “understand” what they are writing, so they are frequently wrong and give their wrong answers very convincingly. If you submit AI text that is incorrect, it will be graded the same as if you wrote something incorrect yourself. For this reason, it is best to use AI tools to “get started” and carefully review, validate, and edit any responses you get. 

Any use of an AI tool must be cited in your work. Guidelines for properly citing AI tools can be found at https://libguides.asu.edu/c.php? g=1311696&p=9700102. Any submitted course material not explicitly identified as having used generative AI will be assumed to be your original work. Using AI tools to generate content without proper attribution will be considered a violation of the ASU Academic Integrity Policy, and students may be sanctioned for confirmed, non-allowable use.

수업에 따라서는 대학원 수업이라도 ChatGPT사용이 허용되지 않는 경우도 있다. 양적 연구 방법론 수업에서는 사용을 금한다는 내용을 강의 계획서에 넣기도 한다.

Use of these generative AI tools will be considered a violation of the ASU Academic Integrity Policy, and students may be sanctioned for confirmed, non-allowable use in this course. 

아카데미는 실생활에서 빠르게 변화되는 속도와 비교해서 조금 더 천천히 가는 느낌이다. (어쩌면 큰 동서부 도시가 아니라 애리조나라서 속도가 조금 느릴 수도 있다). 한국에서보다는 조금 더 일찍 ChatGPT가 화제가 되었지만, 1년이 지난 지금 강의계획서에 상세한 가이드라인을 주고 있다. 

팬데믹 이후로 하이브리드형 업무와 재택근무가 많이 늘었고 일주일에 두세 번만 사무실에 나오는 패턴이 자리 잡을 정도로 이곳의 업무 환경도 변화하고 있다. 원격 업무 (Remote working)에도 많이 관대해졌다. 하지만 곳곳에서 대면 업무나 미팅으로 복귀하려는 움직임도 많이 보인다. 특히 학교에서는 학생들의 대면 수업과 대면 시험을 필수적으로 진행하고자 하는 방향으로 변화하고 있다. 빠르게 진화하는 기술과 환경만큼  적용해야 할 것은 잘 적용하고 비효율적인 부분은 과감하게 버리는 변화가 필요한 시기인 거 같다.
