He showed a photograph to passing strangers and asked if they had seen his wife.
“She has dementia,” he said. “I’m afraid she’s lost and can't find her way home.”
People stopped and peered at the photo with a puzzled expression.
“Is this really your wife?” a young woman asked, her eyes searching his face.
The old man nodded.
He believed every word he said.
After a while, he stopped asking people and wandered through the streets alone.
A police car pulled up next to him.
An officer stepped out and gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You’re here again today,” he said kindly. “Let me take you home.”
“Have you seen my wife?” the old man asked, his voice shaking.
The officer studied the old man’s heartbroken face with compassion, then made a phone call.
“Mom, I found Grandpa,” the officer said.
“He was wandering around again. I’m bringing him home now.”
The woman smiling in the photograph was his wife, who had passed away at a young age.
He whispered to the old, faded black-and-white photograph, his voice tinged with sadness.
"Where are you now? I promise I'll find you tomorrow, and bring you home."
